Army men gather as the Villa Acuna station XER readies for a grand opening on September 16. Officials predict up to 15 000 telegrams and 50 900 pieces of mail daily, with telegraph and payroll traffic surging as the Mexican operation shifts from XECi to XER.
Fort Worth pilots Reg L. Robbins and H. B. Jones prepare for a nonstop refueling flight from Seattle to Tokio in a second-hand single-motor Lockheed. They will refuel over Nome and Fairbanks, Alaska, in a tri motor piloted by Jimmy Mattern. No radio will be carried. A $25 000 prize offered by a Japanese newspaper spurs the flight.
Five Del Rio students Maria Christine Brite Princes Vernetta Laughlin Mary Louise Nelson Dick M Burrell and Tobias Flatow earned Spring semester honors on the University of Texas official honor roll announced by Dean H T Partin. Other honorees include Margaret Catherine Lattimore Sanderson Mary Evelyn Williams Eagle Pass and Reynaldo Montemayor Piedras Negras Mexico.
Del Rio couple Robert and wife mark 44th anniversary after moving from a local ranch. The feature includes the Princess lobby display of The Front Page movie promotion, praised by onlookers as a unique spectacle. Children and relatives from Portland Dryden California and nearby towns gathered for the event.
Estaban Garcia was arrested on North Malin Street by city police Thursday night for speeding and reckless driving and paid a $12.70 fine in town court Friday. A second alleged speeder missed Corporation Court on Friday. police chief Henry Bridge said contempt of court charges were likely.
In San Antonio Mexican Consulate official M C Gonzales said the families of Emilio Cortes Rubio and Manuel Garcia Gomez may file an 800000 damages suit against Oklahoma and ex deputy William E Guess. Guess was acquitted of murder in the August shooting of the two students near Ardmore Oklahoma while en route from a Kansas school to Mexico.
Paris reports a possible general conference on war debts and reparations. Talks may expand to include Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Greece if current Paris parleys fail to resolve the issues.
Dallas report says Chester Achilles, sought in the shooting of his estranged wife Kathleen Achilles and J. W. McCulley as they waited for a street car, remained unlocated. Achilles had telephoned intentions to surrender then said he planned death by his own hand. He did not appear. Kathleen Achilles and McCulley were described as improving.
E Bo Newcombe and ME More were arrested in West Del Rio after moving toward Eagle Pass. Police seized a Studebaker roadster, 600 pints of Corona beer and four quarts of tequila. Each suspect was held on $3,000 bond and jailed in Eagle Pass. their vehicle was confiscated.
New York July 3 P The 48 hours sleepy spell promised Wiley Post and Harold Gatty, world flyers, appeared near Stamford Conn to board William H Todd's yacht for a three day cruise of Long Island Sound. Mayor Jimmy Walker inspected Winnie Mae at Roosevelt Field. The aviators, guests at a banquet with Lindbergh and Chamberlin, rest after their globe circling flight and await a yacht cruise to recuperate.
Texas Congressman Wright Patman outlines a plan to bring impeachment charges against Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon. He claims proof of disqualifications and cites Mellon’s alleged domination of large corporations as grounds for removal.
Chicago reports a record heat wave with 100 deaths and 700 deaths from prostration in eight days. The survey tallies crop damage at 10 million dollars and numerous hospitalizations. Drowning and heat related illnesses contribute to the toll as the heat tightens its grip.
New York July 3 UP A man who cared only for aviation and a navigator from Australia joined forces to circle the globe in under nine days. Wiley Post lost an Oklahoma oil field eye, received $2000 and his first plane, while Harold Gatty trained in the Australian Naval Academy and charted South Seas routes.
An operation transferred J D Conner and Powell from San Angelo to Huntsville for imminent trials on robbery with firearms charges. Both prisoners were heavily escorted with tight security. Conner faces a 15 year sentence while Powell has a five year term. The escape-linked case stems from the May 16 breakout that freed five men.
Del Rio post office staff will not attend the State convention as vacations begin. Carrier Collier Hopkins plans a 15 day motor trip to Yellowstone with Mrs. Hopkins, while clerk R C Courtney will take 15 days of R O T C training in San Antonio. Substitutes will ensure mail service during the 44 hour week law.
Once lauded by three nations and credited with downing 25 enemy planes, Wilbur C Whispering Billi McKenzie, formerly with the British Royal Flying Corps, now earns a living cleaning revolvers for the San Francisco police after becoming stranded and being put to work.
United States commissioner C. D. Smith notes a 50 percent drop in bootlegger and rum runner activity in the first half of 1931 versus 1930. Federal officers report reduced demand as a panic reduces illicit beer and rum purchases, shrinking profits along the Rio Grande routes to Texas, Oklahoma, and other states.
Del Ricans and Val Verde County residents bought 17 new automobiles and two new trucks in June reports by county tax collector Lyle Almond. Two more machines were purchased in July with buyers M. P. Garrett and Dr. J. R. Middlebrook. Last week of June buyers included R. R. Allen Sanderson W. B. Vincent Elige McBee and C. B. Dutch Wardlaw.
The program for the RO T C assembly includes an all day schedule from 8am to 11:30pm with registration at the high school, speeches by Julian LaCrosse district attorney and H E Fuller, Major Douglas J Page on the 90th Division, pistol instruction, lunch at Devil's River Country Club, pistol firing, and entertainment at Villa Acuna. The 141st Army unit from Del Rio will join, bringing many officers and guests.
Mrs. Julio Holiner, married two weeks, fell from an auto on Loop Road near Acuna while her husband tried to swap seats. She struck her head, was taken to Del Rio Clinic, and is expected to recover. A large fiesta followed the wedding in Villa Acuna.
