Charles Miller Sr 89 a long time Del Rio resident died Friday morning at 435 in his home 112 West Martin Street Funeral services will be at 11 Saturday from the family residence with Rev L B Gilbert and the Del Rio Masonic Lodge in charge Miller long served as justice of the peace for Precinct One and was known as Judge Miller Born in Birkenhead England in 1847 he sailed the seas for ten years then settled in the United States living in St Louis before moving to Texas He helped establish Del Rio schools and churches and was famed for granting mercy in court His Masonic lifetime included leadership roles in Las Moras Lodge Brackettville and Del Rio Chapter Royal Arch Council He is survived by Charles Miller Jr a niece Grace M Pletcher and a nephew William Miller
George B. Terrell of Alto former agriculture commissioner announces in the Evening News his bid for the Texas Democratic primary. He warns against use of his name and says he may copyright it to prevent theft. He pledges honest, legal administration and strong support for agricultural development and the farmers.

The Val Verde County tax office nears the 1934 poll tax total as 774 receipts remain to be issued before tonight. Lyle Almond reports 308 receipts and 17 exemption certificates issued yesterday, bringing this year to 2,434, far below 3,208 in 1934 and 2,246 in 1935. The office stays open until midnight except 6 to 7 for a final rush. A steady crowd Thursday and Friday suggests voters near the 1934 level.
The State Board of Health shows influenza topping communicable diseases in Texas for the week ending January 25 1936 with 799 total cases this year versus 1778 in the same period last year. Mumps 293, pneumonia 146, scarlet fever 110, chickenpox 172, diphtheria 64, tuberculosis 35, measles 30, whooping cough and meningococcous meningitis 15 each.

Eastland January 31. County Judge Clyde L. Garrett announced his candidacy for the 17th congressional district seat held by Rep. Thomas L. Blanton. Garrett, serving his fourth term as county judge, previously was county clerk, deputy sheriff and Eastland city manager. He leads the County Judges and Commissioners Association of Texas and formerly led the West Texas organization.
In Trenton Attorney General Wilentz states Hoffmans reopening yields no new evidence and the Lindbergh case remains unchanged. In Joliet State's Attorney Will McCare says Loeb was deliberately murdered by James Day and launches his own inquiry into the alleged plot among Day and other convicts.
In Rome sources a Mussolini response to more war sanctions may include severing diplomatic ties when he addresses the Fascist grand council. New taxes start to bolster the economy as the League of Nations publishes Ethiopian atrocity photographs. Minor front engagements reported with Italian victories claimed.

President Roosevelt said a tax raising measure is needed this session to cover farm program costs and that bonus revenue studies must continue. He stated the revenue would substitute processing taxes and would not be new taxation, but he did not specify a form.
Kerrville suffered a storage fire at the Schreiner wool warehouse causing damage estimated at upwards of 31500. The blaze spread under the floor aided by a sub floor vent, tearing through the 43 year old stone building. About a quarter of the downstairs flooring may need replacement. a small amount of wool remained undamaged in the warehouse with a 1500000 pound capacity.
A prison transfer truck in Scottsboro Alabama burned today as a 30 gallon gasoline drum exploded killing twenty Negro convicts inside the cage. Two convicts were seriously injured and two guards burned while attempting rescues as the truck slid on ice.
A goodwill broadcast from Mexico City will air on the Mexican National Radio Station at 940 kilocycles Saturday from 7 to 9 p m. Captain Garza Farfan will read an English message conveying President Cardenas gratitude for U S military visitors and friendly exchanges.
Mrs. C. R. Sutton reported a blaze at 1001 Avenue B on Thursday caused by a curtain igniting from a gas range. Sutton quickly extinguished the flames as the maid struggled to relay the address to firefighters, with damages estimated around $90.
