Mrs Ophelia Dees Strickland 89 mother of Mrs Ed Mey of Del Rio died Tuesday at a ranch near Leake. Funeral held Wednesday at Cypress Creek Cemetery near Leake with survivors including two daughters and three sons. The obituary notes she was a Daughter of the Confederacy and born in Louisiana in 1847.
A 40 car Great Northern freight train derailed into a loss of control after an air brake failure in downtown Tacoma. The train, speeding about 60 mph, crossed six major crossings before rail workers halted it with hand brakes on the last cars. no injuries were reported. Engineer W G Myers had last checked the equipment at South Tacoma and found no brakes. Tower watchman redirected the train to an open track, likely preventing a major wreck.
Washington reports the death of Pr Lieutenant Joseph Zimmerman the second casualty from the army plane crash near Front Royal Virginia yesterday afternoon. Private Henry L. Neid was burned to death and four others injured in the fog bound crash into a mountainside.
James Oliver Deaton age 58 died Thursday morning from injuries in a truck accident south of Sonora. Funeral was in Comstock with Pastor Abernathy officiating and burial in Comstock Cemetery. He had lived in Val Verde County about 55 years. survived by a son Claude, a daughter Mrs Jack Epperson, five brothers and two sisters.
