Del Rio Country Club members selected the board of governors for the ensuing year at their annual dinner meeting. Officers will be chosen from board members W. P. Wallace Jr, R. M. Crosby, Grady Lowrey, Billie Lewie, J. E. White, J. Turney Terrell, Arfie Cauthorn, Alymer Gilmer, Aubrey Rowland, Hilary Doran, and Tom Miller. Present officers are W. P. Wallace Jr president R. M. Crosby vice president and Tom Miller secretary-treasurer.
A total of $11,232.01 was paid into Val Verde County in taxes Monday and Tuesday, per county tax assessor Lyle S. Almond. Seventy-eight poll tax receipts and 33 exemption certificates were issued, increasing registered voters to 1,894. Two days’ collections include 1935 taxes, auto, poll taxes, beer licenses, and delinquent taxes.
W F Easterling of Del Rio was re-elected to the board of directors of the Uvalde Production Credit Association at the annual meeting in Uvalde. New officers named were Jack Ashby president George Jolley vice president and R H Alvey secretary treasurer. Loans totaling 620000 since organization and current outstanding 269918.61 were reported along with a note that members own 20 percent of capital stock.
Luke Thompson sold his Schleicher County ranch of about 8000 acres, 14 miles southeast of Eldorado, to P. K. McIntosh of Kilgore for around 160000 dollars. The deal includes about 3000 sheep and over 300 cattle with possession to be given immediately.
Johnny Williams of A. W. Hilliard and Sons in Boston announced Wednesday that 100000 pounds were added to an eight month wool contract for spring delivery in the Del Rio area. Williams said the fleeces are contracted at 30 cents a pound and he expects further purchases soon, though his current quota is met.
Del Rio High School added fiction biography and reference titles to its library. Librarian Ruth Cowan announced popular books include Spring Came Ons Forever, Magnificent Obsession, Mexico, Trailing Cortez Through Mexico, Tongues of the Monte, The Oregon Trail, The Texas Rangers, With Sam Houston in Texas, The Raven, Franklin D Roosevelt, Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles. The Doyal Summitt and Lamar Smith gifts were gratefully received.
In Joliet Illinois a coroner's jury heard prison psychiatrist Dr John Larson confirm part of James Day's account that Richard Loeb's indecent advances provoked Day's fatal attack. Day, a convict, was formally charged with murder as investigators seek the full story behind Loeb's death.
A Texas Prison System compilation shows clemency odds over 10 to 1 against death sentences affirmed by Appellate Courts in Gov. Allred’s first year. Twenty-two men were executed Jan 15, 1935, to Jan 16, 1936, with Raymond Hamilton and Joe Palmer notable. 20 murder convictions and 2 rape cases. Harris County led in death-penalty cases. August had the most executions.
A school bus overturn on an icy highway near Tupelo, Colgate Oklahoma, results in the deaths of the bus driver and three children. Twelve other children aboard are uninjured.
The South wide grass roots convention of anti Roosevelt Democrats opens in Macon Georgia with Governor Eugene Talmadge and John Henry Kirby predicting about 10 000 attendees. They back a campaign for the return of constitutional government and aim to defeat Roosevelt for the presidential nomination.
Del Rio talent will broadcast for one hour on Radio Station XERA tonight at 9 as part of the Rotary Club’s annual ladies night dinner at Hotel Roswell. The program includes speeches, songs, piano solos, and ensembles led by Paul J. Poag with greetings to Rotary Clubs worldwide and performances by Misses Mary Turner, Louise Turner, Elizabeth Qualia, and Annnie Jones among others.
The Senate Agriculture Committee approved the revised administration soil conservation bill by a 14 to 2 vote. Members said a few changes had been made. The House committee was in recess.
The Terrell County grand jury convened in Sanderson for the January term of District Court, was impanelled and sat two hours reporting no indictments. The panel adjourned for the remainder of the term as residents praised the law abiding community.
Quemado Valley near Eagle Pass Texas may become a federal relief project with resettlement for West Texas families. Leaders met in Dallas with E P Trent to plan moving several hundred families to 30 acre tracts each with house and farming stock. A 57 mile canal extension, irrigation access, and $2 422 000 PWA grant will fund repairs and 18 month work for 1 000 men starting February 1.
Al Smith mocked Senator Robinson asserting the speech was not heartfelt and described it as canned. He called himself an unhappy warrior and declined to address its content. Borah supporters opened Eastern campaign against the New Deal and old guard Republicans. Insurgent Southern Democrats met to oppose Roosevelt nomination with Talmadge and Kirby criticizing central power in Washington.
E K Fawcett was elected vice president of the Concho Valley Council Boy Scouts of America at the council’s annual San Angelo meeting attended by over 400 from 41 West Texas towns. The roster includes John Y. Rust Henry Ragsdale Ettmett Cox Roy Aldwell and Houston Harte with 22 counties 51 troops and 1200 scouts in the council.
Harrie the hand artist and magician will entertain Lions Club members at their Thursday luncheon in Hotel Roswell. He says he resorts to no illusions.
