In Montevideo on January 29 government reports say five persons died and several were wounded in clashes between Federal troops and rebels. Independent nationalist Ovidio Alonzo led about 500 revolutionists and was seriously wounded in the Costa da Colla district. About 18,000 Federal troops were deployed to keep order.
Secretary Ickes declined to say the four million dollar Texas project is under investigation by the District of Columbia grand jury, noting he would not "try it in advance of the jury."
Mozelle Stevens 18 of Seymour died after being found unconscious beside a wrecked automobile on Highway 30 two miles south of Haskell. Her companion Roy Smith of Hobbs New Mexico is probably fatally injured.
Washington January 29 begins with Senate debating ratification of the World Court. Both supporters and opponents predict a close final vote, needing a two thirds majority to approve the measure.
City records show tax rolls of eighty thousand dollars with only thirty thousand dollars collected to date. City Clerk E F Howard said officials have not filed suit on delinquents, but slow collections threaten the margin as total taxes paid reach thirty thousand and overall receipts hover near expected levels.
In Norristown Pennsylvania on January 29 coroner R Ronald Detre said seven month old Verna Elizabeth Watters was found dead in her crib allegedly smothered by a family dog. The dog lay asleep on the crib and the infant was found face down under the covers.
In Baton Rouge on January 29 district court judge Pi J D Womack signed an order directing Sheriff Robert L Pettit to locate and seize missing books and records of East Baton Rouge Parish governing council. The disappearance followed a move by nine elected police jury members to resist Huey Long’s control by arranging appointments to outvote the faction.
Mrs. Nellie Buchanan a school collector for the Del Rio Independent School District urged Del Rioans to pay their school taxes before Friday when the rolls will go delinquent. The moratorium does not affect taxes delinquent after August 1 1934. After Thursday 6 percent interest and a 10 percent penalty will be imposed. Records show tax collections this year are far below last year at this time.
The Plainview Chamber of Commerce lists eight conventions and district meetings for the year. The Panhandle Plains Dairy Show runs April 15 to 18, District 2-T Lions meets April 21 to 23, and the West Texas Chamber of Commerce convenes May 13 to 15. Other events include district firemen, Federated Women's Clubs, PTA Congress of Mothers, and a Methodist Church conference with dates to be announced.
In Flemington New Jersey on January 29 prosecutor David Wilentz pressed Hauptmann with his own phrasing to tie him to the 14 Lindbergh ransom notes. Washington January 29 Physicians nearly abandon hope for the recovery of Jed C. Adams a member of the United States board of tax appeals who is seriously ill with pneumonia. Friends said Adams lost consciousness last night.
Amarillo reports lead dentists watch Texas Panhandle efforts to prevent mottled teeth linked to fluorine in water. City chemist Jack Wyatt, chairing a new committee, cites Panhandle as largest fluorine area and notes interest from national studies sparked by government input. Fluorine testing runs locally in Wyatt's lab.
The Secretary of the Interior ordered Carlos Blanco, chief of immigration at Piedras Negras, to proceed to the coal mining districts at Cloete Agujita and Sabinas to close all gambling places.
Thirteen people including three women died from drinking poison liquor in Gloversville New York. Three others are critically ill as authorities widen a probe into the source. The toll in Eastern and Central New York reaches 28 in five days with seventeen deaths in Utica and Rome and six more in critical condition. Federal county and city authorities press the investigation.
Cage Brothers holding the contract will hire 65 workers from the National Re-employment Office on Pecan Street across from the courthouse for grading draining and seal coating 6166 miles of highway west of Shumla to west of the Pecos River. A contractor representative will visit Del Rio soon to select men including grader operators powder men road roller operators bulldozer operators and Mack truck drivers. The job lasts about five months with meals and sleeping quarters provided and base at Shumla. Register with the office before February 1 to be considered.
City Hall displayed a 5 by 6 foot map detailing proposed boundary lines. City Engineer Paul Blevins invited Del Rioans to view how the charter amendment would shrink city area by about 50 percent from nine square miles, removing farm land and other outlying sections.
