State National Guardsmen took charge of East Baton Rouge sheriff's office in Baton Rouge Louisiana. A militia lieutenant and corporal visited Sheriff Robert L. Pettit, amid Huey Long efforts to control deputies, and assumed possession after a conference. Guns and ammunition were checked and the corporal remained in charge.
Federico Trevino was released Monday under $500 bond after a complaint charged assault with intent to murder. The complaint followed his apprehension Sunday evening in San Felipe by officers Bob LeRoy and Rudolph Coronado after witnesses said he brandished a loaded pistol.
Roswell Vaughan of Eagle Pass has been appointed by Gov. James V. Allred to the allied military staff with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Other appointees at that rank include Carl Estes of Longview James H. Nickerson of Dallas S N Ekdahl of Austin Vincent Chiodo of Houston and W T Knight of Wichita Falls.
Benjamin Franklin's own copy of Experiments on Electricity with autograph margin notes was sold at auction to Gabriel Wells for 2400 dollars in New York on January 28.
Grace Brandon of Brooks Field Texas, a stenographer who reportedly received gifts from Maj Charles A Shepard, is the alleged intended bride mentioned hours before his second wife died. The retired Army officer faces a poison murder charge in Topeka Federal Court as a key government witness. Shepard previously was convicted and later reversed by the Supreme Court.
At a called meeting in Marfa Texas on January 28 cattlemen from the trans Pecos area passed resolutions praising government aid and urging higher loan limits from the Farm Credit Administration extended credit and time, continuation of a livestock protective tariff and AAA rules to keep land in production. Highland Hereford Breeders Association officers and directors were re elected at the morning session.
The House urged the Senate to promptly consider House bills and warned it may withhold action on Senate measures until Senate rules restricting first forty days to emergency bills are lifted. Federal agents with Foster Texas rangers and Oklahoma deputies arrested two men and two women linked to the Buffalo Texas Citizens State Bank robbery. Captain Hickman aided the operation and about $1,420 was recovered. The Buffalo bank was robbed of around $5,000 on January 16. detainees include Cory Hudson, 29, Bryan Texas and Arthur Whitten, 27, Mineral Springs Arkansas.
Funeral services for Jacob Reinhart 73, father of A F Reinhart of Del Rio, will be held Tuesday afternoon in Sabinal. He died in a San Antonio hospital Saturday night. Survivors include his widow Mary Shaken Reinhart of Sabinas, two daughters Maur ice P Twomey of San Antonio and Arthur H Rothe of D Hanish, nine sisters and one brother.
Post Commander J. E. Fuquay will read letters from Congressman Charles L. South and Senator Morris Sheppard on bonus matters at the meeting in the Chamber of Commerce at 7 30 tonight. Members will also discuss aliens.
General Javier Romo Velasquez surrendered to police in Mexico City after fatally shooting Dr. M Samuel Inclan during an operation on the general's son. The surgeon had just begun the operation when the doctor spoke of the son's death, prompting the general to fire. The boy survived, doctors said.
Tax assessor confirms only three days left to pay 1934 taxes without penalty or interest. Through Jan 27 collections total $19,547.06, well under 1934 and 1933 figures. Polls issued count 782 this year compared with 1,674 and 1,123 in prior years. Almond warns of rush and lines and urges immediate payment.
The North Mississippi flood zone shifted east to Crowder and Curtis and south to Lambert as overflow waters rise. Red Cross officials expressed optimism as Marks and North improve, with lowlands around Crowder Sumner and Weir remaining at risk for days. Washington Red Cross representative George E. Myer estimates about 20 dead in the flood area.

Dutch Wardlaw George E. ONeill and Willie B Whitehead left Sunday for Phoenix Ariz to attend the annual meeting of the National Wool Growers Association From Phoenix Mr Wardlaw and Mr Whitehead will go to Yuma where they have sheep on pasturage.
Miss Ida Mae Stuhl is back on the job near Cadiz Ohio after a state ban was lifted. She has worked in coal mining for over 20 years and says she wants to earn money to pay debts and leave relief rolls. She plans housekeeping as a sideline.
Congressman Charles L. South of the 21st Texas District voiced opposition to Townsend’s Old Age Pension scheme. He reiterated to Del Rio residents that he backs a modest $15 to $25 monthly pension but argues Townsend’s $200 monthly plan would bankrupt the nation.
The First Methodist Church hosts a free supper at 7 30 p m Tuesday in the House of Friendship led by new pastor Rev L C Beasley. George E Love will serve as master of ceremonies with special music by the church Male Quartet. Dr W W Jackson president of Westmoorland College San Antonio will speak. he is lay leader of the West Texas Conference. The event kicks off church quarterly programs with plans for a great crowd and time.
Mrs. Edward F Swift, 69, widow of a Chicago packer, died at her home after a long illness. Her sons T Philip Swift and Edward F Swift and daughter Mrs Annie May Henry were at her bedside. Funeral services were held in the apartment. Mrs Swift was formerly Hortense Newcomer of Forreston Illinois.
In Flemington on January 28, Bruno Richard Hauptmann faced a sharp cross examination about sketches of a window and ladder tied to the Lindbergh baby case. The state alleges the infant was stolen March 1, 1932 and died after a ladder broke during an escape.
Judge John Lochabay dismissed disorderly charges against two San Felipe men after ruling two nights in the city jail were sufficient punishment. The men had been arrested Saturday night during a “grand fashion” celebration. their hearing was deferred to Monday.
Mrs. Amanda Louisa Patten aged 76 widow of Chicago wheat king James A. Patten died Sunday in an Evanston hospital after a long illness. The former Mrs. Patten, a prominent Chicago social figure, had shared public life with the Patten family during his business prominence. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
Dr. John R. Brinkley says he will not move his sanitarium from Del Rio to McAllen despite purchasing Radio Station XEAW at Reynosa Mexico. He plans a $100000 upgrade to XERW to 100000 watts and expects XER to operate by mid February with broadcasts from XER over the new station.
Jed C. Adams, member of the U S Board of Tax Appeals and former Democratic National Committeeman of Texas, remained conscious in an oxygen tent after a three day pneumonia crisis began. Doctors said he faced a hopeful recovery if he could endure through Wednesday. He had a restless night but showed no deterioration, friends reported.
Jed C. Adams of Dallas was put in an oxygen tent at 4 p.m. Sunday as he battles pneumonia. Dr. Sterling Ruffin said there was no immediate danger and his temperature was slightly lower, though respiration remains difficult. The tent is for comfort and will stay until there is appreciable improvement.
Judge Brian Montague District Attorney Julian LaCrosse and court reporter Mrs Belle Sutherland left Sunday for Sanderson for the term of District Court opening Monday. Judge W F Boggress also left Sunday to attend the Sanderson court session.
