Notice that the tax bill, signed by Governor Allred, relieves penalties and interest on taxes delinquent before August 1, 1934 if paid by March 15, 1935. Effective January 22, the bill applies to pre 1934 delinquencies only and not to 1934 taxes. The legislature moved the effective date to immediate rather than February 9, but costs and penalties after June 30, 1935 remain.

A special grand jury will meet February 6 to investigate graft in the Public Works Administration. U S Attorney Leslie C. Garnett and John W. Fidelly will focus on the four million dollar Texas canal project amid reports of a conspiracy to defraud the United States. Eight or ten people, including federal officials, are said to be involved. PWA officials declined to name the project.
Funeral services for J W House Sr were conducted Saturday at 5 30 PM in Carrizo Springs at the Methodist Church. He died Friday afternoon in Carrizo Springs. His son J W House Jr teaches in the Del Rio school system. R M Bankhead Mrs A F Reinhart and Miss Ann Stinson traveled to attend. The House family left Friday afternoon after the message.
A blaze at the residence of Juan G. Sanchez in San Felipe caused about $20 in damages. Fire officials said mice gnawed matches in a chest of drawers and started the fire, which was confined to the chifferobe.
Laverne Bivin, a 16 year old high school junior from Gainesville, is believed to be among the nation’s youngest licensed pilots. He earned a student license two months after his 16th birthday and soloed in December with only two hours 15 minutes of dual instruction. He has spent years at the local airport as a grease ball and aims to be an aeronautical engineer.
W. A. Stigler, director of Curriculum and Text Books in Texas, addressed Del Rio teachers on a four year state program to revise teaching from kindergarten to college. He outlined four phases, stressing thinking and problem solving over rote facts, with wide state involvement and updates to include private instruction.
Captain Edmund Wang of the Talisman testified at a federal inquiry that the Linter Mohawk suddenly swerved into the Talisman’s path as both ships sailed south, causing a collision that cost 46 lives. He suggested a problem with the Mohawk’s steering apparatus.
Production Credit Association announced officers at the Del Rio meeting. J. H. Ashby Jr. was named president, George C. Jolley vice president, and R. H. Alvey secretary treasurer. Directors include W. FP Easterling Del Rio, Ed Custer Camp Wood, J. H. Burgin Hondo, Jolley Uvalde. Loans totaling 198,390 were issued to ranchers in Bandera Medina Real Uvalde Edwards Kinney Val Verde and Tarrant territories at 5 percent for 3 to 12 months for crops livestock and livestock products. M. D. McNutt is local correspondent. Production Credit Corporation of Houston supplies 75 percent of capital stock.
Brooklyn January 26 The defense lawyer Edward J Reilly said his next witness will testify that he saw Bruno Richard Hauptmann at a Bronx gasoline station the night of the kidnapping. The witness allegedly has written proof of a conversation with Hauptmann about the case, as the defense remains anchored on an alibi claim that Hauptmann was not in Hopewell the night the Lindbergh baby was kidnapped.
Twenty four women worked last week on a relief sewing project under Administrator E S Block. They sew clothing and household textiles at the McLellan store sewing room using their own machines, with Mrs Estell DeShazo supervising as an experienced seamstress.
Governor Allred appoints Roy Jackson of Laredo as the third member of the Texas State Livestock Sanitary Commission joining R. H. Martin of Del Rio and Dave Nelson of Orange with Nelson as chairman. Jackson's appointment completes the commission slate.
In Mexico City on January 26, Dr Samuel Inclin, a throat specialist, was shot dead by a distraught father who believed his son had died during surgery. The boy survived. The father, reportedly a former army general, fled as police hunted him.
New York dig out of a snow storm with thirty thousand men and hundreds of plow equipped vehicles. The operation uses three hundred ninety flushing trucks a hundred ninety cross walk plows forty three snow sweeping machines. One hundred and ninety loading machines ninety six hauling trucks six hundred seventy assorted trucks. Estimated cost tops one million dollars.
The body of Ralph Christian a Gonzales truck driver missing since Sunday was found today in the Houston ship channel. Christian had delivered eggs to Houston and an alarm was broadcast after his failure to return.
J Russell Wait chair of the Houston Port Commission notes that thousands of Edwards Plateau goat skins are shipped to New York where they are transformed into high value fur garments. He argues Texas loses raw material value as manufacturing profits accrue to New York, urging Texas industrial development for prosperity.
Austin limits floor access to those with floor privileges as the Senate adopts rules for courtesy and decorum. A special committee drafts conduct rules while Lieutenant Governor Woodall enforces access, penalizing nonessential staff and visitors to speed up legislation. The chamber also limits emergency bill consideration to the first ten days, clashing with the House stance on the constitutional amendment.
The inquiry into a supposed murder plot against Senator Huey Long opened in Baton Rouge under heavy national guard protection. Long announced a civil proceeding to hear testimonies while a mob troubled the parish courthouse last night.
Sanderson prepare for a regular district court term starting Monday January 28 with District Judge Brian Montague and officials from Del Rio in attendance. Petit jurors are summoned January 31 including A C Clatfelter and 32 others. grand jurors summoned January 28 include A Appel and 12 more. Eleven criminal and six civil cases are on the docket.
Del Rio area forecast shows warmer conditions tonight and Sunday. Temperatures yesterday reached 58 with a low of 36, and this morning's minimum is 41. East Texas will warm tonight with Sunday partly cloudy. West Texas and the Southeast stay warm tonight with Sunday fair conditions.
