Birmingham, January 25. Solicitor Melvin Hutson announced a grand jury investigation of the fight between the Scottsboro defendants and officers that left Ozie Powell in serious condition. The inquiry will be held in Decatur on February 17, with a defendant contending Powell struck Deputy Blalock after being slapped by the officer.
Five Del Ricans left Saturday for Sonora to attend a Masonic meeting and help confer several Masonic degrees. The party included F. W. H. Wehner R. H. Chalk Grover C. Poole Assistant Postmaster W. C. Hodge and J. B. Brokaw.
The U S Weather Bureau forecasts a severe drop for Del Rio and region with temperatures down to 16 to 24 degrees. A second cold wave from the Rockies reaches Oklahoma and North Texas with snow and sleet in the Panhandle tonight. Subzero conditions widen across the nation. 129 deaths attributed to the cold in 16 states. Six Pennsylvania highways blocked. rescuers free 16 pupils trapped in a Jennerstown farm house after two days.

Curtis Bishop reports a Roswell hotel gathering of American Legion members marking the 1936 leadership. Dr J A McDonald was named post commander with Les Cranfill senior vice commander and Frank Stiles junior vice commander, among others. Guests included Gen Evan H. Humphrey and Col A C Richardson as the Fifth Cavalry band played.
Del Rio WPA work nears finish on two water mains from San Felipe springs to the pump house and a new San Felipe system, with about a week left on each. A bridge over San Felipe Creek at Gillis Avenue sees a three day delay due to monthly WPA limits. Fifty to ninety workers are active on Gibbs Street improvements and a 33-woman sewing crew operates in the relief office. Val Verde County applications for 36.3 miles of farm to market roads and a mineral resources survey have been approved by WPA Administrator W. P. Drought.
The Senate Agriculture committee postponed final action on the subsidy soil conservation farm plan amid doubts over constitutionality. Secretary Wallace and aides will present further arguments Monday as the text retains grant powers for farmers to improve soil and use land economically.

In a mid air collision at Luke Field on Ford Island six Army airmen died as two big bombers crashed in flames. Two other crewmen bailed out unharmed. Investigators were ordered. The wreckage burned beyond recognition within 100 feet of naval fuel tanks. witnesses reported a terrifying roar and flame glare visible from Waikiki Beach.
In dense fog a small plane vanished from Grand Prairie airfield and burst into a pasture southeast of Itasca. The victims: Ralph Kirk pilot from Grand Prairie. Albert Boren Dallas architect. George Carter Dallas salesman. Marvin Upchurch Dallas farmer.
Wool growers in Sonora and surrounding counties refused 30 cents a pound while buyers contracted 640000 pounds of spring wool. Guy Burton of Menard bought about 500000 pounds for Porte Dupee and Sawyer of Boston, and Guy Drake of San Angelo for the Colonial Wool Co. Purchases ranged across Menard Concho Tom Green Reagan and Irion counties with $1 a head advances. Burton sought an additional 250000 pounds for Sutton county clips but could not fill the order.
