A tragic crash near Berea Ohio involving a New York Central train and a school bus resulted in the deaths of ten children and one adult. The wreck occurred fifteen miles from Cleveland at a railroad crossing as the bus was struck by the train. Police set up a broad roundup after the incident with many suspects detained and later released.
After completing jury selection, the Brady murder trial enters testimony phase with Henry Brooks leading the prosecution and Dayton Moses as chief defense attorney. Joan Brady, ex jurist, stands accused of killing Lehila High emith, a stenographer in Austin.
The Edwards County case centered on Ger man bonds sold by New and Lasater. Judge, jury and witnesses from Val Verde County and Edwards County attended sessions, with New and Lasater jailed on $12,500 bonds. The trial highlighted notes bearing John Rosenow’s name and involved the Rev J A Campbell of Del Rio among others.
A Madison Motor Company foreman, G A Stewart, is recommended for supervisor of the Val Verde County census of distribution and manufactures. David Barnhill, census supervisor for the twenty first district, says the February work will canvass all county business places with a set of questions to be disclosed when ready. Barnhill adds data will be used only for census purposes and not shared with other government agencies.
Fairfield Texas January 25 A Black man named Monroe Higgins was found with his head injuries embedded in ice at Cottonseed Creek near Fairfield. Police believe the body was struck elsewhere then dumped into the creek.
Representatives of the Ohio Oil Company in Finlay advance a plan to exchange $60,000,000 in preferred stock for Illinois Pipe Line Company shares, offering three Ohio shares per Illinois share. Del Rio Texas operations run from Yates pool to Lytle, with 138 miles eight inch line and 126 miles to Lytle, aided by eighteen pump stations.
A full page advertisement from Eagle Distributing Co is printed in the Evening News urging support for local home enterprises. The notice highlights the local company and invites readers to trade with home businesses as part of today’s back-page promotion.
Seven new pew subscribers join the Del Rio Evening News as circulation rises beyond city and Val Verde County weekly totals. Management praises growth since consolidation in spring and pledges local focus on sheep and goat industry while avoiding foreign news. New subscribers include John Wrather, A W Self, Cross Dodd, George Miler, A Blume, Mrs Potter, Mrs Geo Adams.

In Alpena on January 25 Mrs William Kent aged 43 and her five children aged five to fourteen were killed when their home burned shortly after midnight. Neighbors raised the alarm as the blaze engulfed the structure trapping the family inside. Bodies were badly burned and difficult to identify.
A premature dynamite explosion in a Amagu a Pennsylvania mine today killed two men and seriously injured two others.
Radio station KTSL applied to the federal radio commission in New Orleans for operation on a wavelength now used by KWKH if KWKH's license is not renewed. KWKH is owned by W. K. Henderson, who is accused of profanity and of attacking chain store systems.
Fire in Knippa ten miles east of Uvalde destroyed the residence of Harry Chin on Tuesday afternoon. Flames started in the rear and gained headway before discovery. Some furniture was saved. loss several thousand dollars. The cause is undetermined.
Dr. George H. Garrett was elected president of the staff of the Del Rio Hospital and Clinic to be opened soon. Dr. James Long became secretary and a committee including Dr. York Meredith and Long will draft the constitution and by laws. The next meeting is February 10, with several doctors attending the Friday night session at Gibbs Street hospital.
Fire swept the million dollar plant of the American Foundries in Indianapolis causing an estimated damage of $900,900. All city firefighting apparatus were used and the blaze was controlled after two hours. The origin is believed to be a blast furnace. The plant covers two blocks.
The Del Rio Refining Company completed installation of new towers exchangers tanks and water facilities at a $40000 cost to meet extra contracts. It now runs 4500 barrels daily up from 4000 and supplies fuel oil to Central Power and Light for a 20000 horsepower Devil's River plant. The Eagle Distributing Company employs 33 with a $150000 payroll and operates a 900 gallon GMC truck plus nine other vehicles across a 265 mile radius.
Commercial and agricultural interests in California and Utah join Texas and New Mexico in opposing a proposal to place Mexican immigration on a quota basis. Hearings before the House Committee on Immigration describe Filipino laborers as quarrelsome and the Mexican peon as innocent and friendly. If enacted, Western farmers would have to import workers from Porto Rico and the Philippines, risking unemployment during harvests. Bills to quota Mexican and other western hemi immigration are expected to be reported to the House calendar next week.
Poll tax receipts must be presented at the polls for the February 8 ballot and February 11 school bond election. County tax collector John W. Almond Sr. said voters must show receipts as lists won’t be ready. penalties begin after the final paying week.
City secretary reports building permits this week for two new homes and several smaller projects. Frank Pingenot secured a permit for a five room hollow tile stucco house 30 by 40 costing 4000 in North Heights with bath. Daniel R Perez's tile dwelling 30 by 24 costs 3000. Severiano Perez to build a four room adobe for 500. L P Walker to re roof a frame garage with shingles for 100.
Mrs Josephine R Downie of San Antonio died Thursday in Oakland California from injuries in an automobile accident. Funeral services planned for Austin Monday afternoon. She was widow of Charles Downie of Sanderson. Survived by son Ed Downie of San Antonio two daughters Mary Downie Kirig and Octavia Downie of Oakland and grandson Charles A Downie Jr.
WeWokA Oklahoma June report says Gerald Woodworth, 20, allegedly confessed to killing District Attorney John A. Holmes in Borger. Ranger Captain Tom Hickman calls the confession “pure bunk” and says the boy sought sympathy from his father while denying facts to avoid prosecution.
Army Engineers approve a 26 ton channel to Brazoe Island harbor in Texas near Brownsville. The project costs about 4.78 million dollars with 2.5 million in bonds ready and 2.175 million to be supplied by interests. maintenance is set at 155 thousand dollars annually. The approval follows the opening of Corpus Christi harbor in 1926.
Judge Joss Mi Belle Sutherlar porte will open a two week court session at 10 oclock Monday in Sanderson. District Attorney Julian Lacrosse and experts will leave for Sanderson Sunday evening. The Terrell County grand jury will meet Monday morning and the petit jury will report Thursday. After Sanderson the court moves to Rocksprings Edwards County for grand jury deliberations and non jury cases. A second petit jury will report in the second week.
