In Otway Ohio on January 4 a blaze swept the Perry home killing four of the Perry children and injuring two others who leaped from second story windows. Mr and Mrs Perry and their 32 children were asleep as the flames started, believed to be caused by an overheated stove.
Edward Wellman 81 died Thursday afternoon after an operation at a local sanitarium. Funeral services at Sacred Heart Church were led by Rev. Cartier with pallbearers R M Hamilton C H Conie J J Foster Stanford Payne and others. He lived in DeRic two and a half years and was with Sneuthweet Texas Abstract Co. Born Cincinnati September 17 1878 he was married to Mrs Wellman and survived by a daughter Dorothy Wellman and several relatives in Missouri Ohio and California. Friends and business associates paid tribute to his optimism geniality and integrity.
Texas and Mexican sanitary authorities reached border agreements on dispositions. Representatives from both sanitary departments met at the Board of Health in Mexico City to discuss questions, though the specific nature of the agreements was not announced by the Mexican consul's office citing the Secretary of Foreign Relations of Mexico.
Morris Culp lit a small stove under his car motor to aid starting. While warming the engine he milked in the barn. Returning with a milk pail he saw smoke, poured milk on the blaze, and saved the car. E B Lepper in Michigan leaped from a second story window when he dreamed of his home on fire and was critically hurt.

In Austin on Jan 24 the jury for Jobo Brady's trial over Lehila Highemith's death nears completion with 11 of 12 chosen. Several jurors are named including Miles the Baptist hardware clerk and Tom White the butcher, as spectators fill the courtroom.
L E K Davis and son visited the Rust Ranch oil test seven miles east of Del Rio assessing the L Rust field. The Independent Operator well near Eagle Pass is deepest and best in the area. Drilling halted at 5070 feet in dark shale last September. a productive sand may lie beneath. Plans to continue drilling face about $10,000 in repairs and expenditures. Interest in oil tests has risen recently with more drilling contemplated.
Leonhard Sepalia cannot meet Emil St Godard in the 200 mile dor derby at The Pas in March due to a prior Alaska engagement. The two will race earlier in Quebec on February 20 a 140 mile event won last year by Sepalia and the year before by St Godard. St Godard has accepted Sepalia's challenge to the longer race.
After brief defense arguments, a Val Verde County jury weighed the Ben E New indictment charging swindling tied to German bonds. Witnesses described notes bearing John Rosenow’s name and the sale of bonds valued in millions of marks amid disputes over money and instrument value.
Lone Star Gas main line broke in Ballinger leaving the city without fuel as temperatures stood at 14 degrees above zero. The company announced repairs would be completed by night.
Miss Pauline Cox of Gordon Arkansas, a Henderson State Teachers College student, is named queen of South Arkansas and will be crowned January 24 at the South Atlantic Chamber of Commerce convention in Blytheville with Governor Parnell presiding. Motor boats push through ice on the St. Francis River to reach marooned families amid flood relief efforts. Mood district reports three deaths, two of them by freezing, as 200000 acres stay underwater and tents serve as shelters.
Five power naval delegates in London held informal discussions on armament reduction and aims at drafting specific recommendations for Monday’s conference. Preparatory meetings occurred across delegations while leaders voiced confidence in the talks. Affairs of the proceedings are kept secret to avoid disclosure, following a grand banquet hosted for delegates last night.
A death verdict by self-inflicted hanging was returned by a Justice of the Peace in Denton on January 24. Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Rockman, 72, was found hanging from a staircase bannister at her sister’s home, Mrs. F. O. Mec Reynolds. Relatives said she had been despondent over failing eyesight.
Mr and Mrs J B Leonard announce the birth of an eight pound baby boy born Wednesday night. The newborn will be named Miers Leonard.
The Central Power and Light Company will start the first steam unit at Devil's River in February, delivering up to 10,000 horsepower to the trunk transmission for Del Rio and nearby areas. A second unit is due in about 30 days, bringing total capacity to 20,000 horsepower with three boilers and Dallas firm L. E. Myers and Company handling the contract.
Work on the Santa Fe terminal track base at Sonora started Wednesday when Claude Garvis grading outfit, as sub contractor, began operations. Five miles of grading between Carnero and Eldorado are finished. Rock blasting in Eldorado yards ended after a week, and a steam shovel began removal work.
Joseph Robbins of Pawtucket Rhode Island was sentenced to three months in jail after locking his wife inside a cemetery vault, an act described as cruel confinement.
Al Dietzel robbed a Denver home then fell asleep, his loud snoring leading to his discovery and arrest by police. The ensuing case spots Dietzel in custody as investigators pursue charges stemming from the break-in.
Fawcett was re elected president of the Southwest Texas Council of Boy Scouts at a regional meeting in Uvalde. W N Saathoff of Hondo became first vice president and Dr Meyer of Eagle Pass second vice president. W F Morgan of Uvalde was named treasurer and George E Love of Del Rio national councilman. Funds and deeds for a camp site were discussed with about 60 members present.
One hundred twelve Texas legislators toured Fort Bend County prison farms in Houston, then planned to visit Brazoria County facilities at Clements Retrieve and Ramsey farms. The trip aims to study prison centralization as part of the current special session.
Rocks Springs January 24 The opening of district court in February may bring trial of the Hatch cases involving the Hatch ranch and its administration. Two suits titled Sally Ann Hatch vs J R Banister et al and Sally Ann Hatch vs BE Webb et al list about 15 lawyers. Mrs Hatch on the ranch is represented by Dodson of San Antonio and Wheelees of Kerrville. Administration is represented by Will Morris of San Antonio with the federal land bank also in counsel. The civil docket shows about 15 cases and the grand jury will consider only a few.
Two gunmen robbed the South Park Savings Bank in Dayton Ohio escaping with about 16000 in cash. One carried a small machine gun and the other a shotgun as they fled in a waiting car without firing.
In San Jose a 22 year old Alfred Johnson was stabbed twice in the back by a mob of whites after a confrontation with Filipinos. Whites then attacked four Filipinos in retaliation. The unrest follows earlier violence in Watsonville and broadening tensions over Filipino labor and dance hall employment. Authorities seek to curb further violence with county intervention and Legion support. Watsonville Legionnaires pledged patrols and stand ready to aid police to maintain order.
Arrangements are under way for the Wool and Mohair Warehouse Association of Texas meeting in San Angelo on February 4, announced by secretary G C Magruder. The date was moved from February 10 and the location will be announced by president Robert Massie in the coming days.
The fifth meeting of the Borderway Association selects P. Spangler of Uvalde to oversee Austin activities and legislative liaison. A plan to organize county auxiliaries is adopted along Highway 90 route with a publicity push for summer tourism and efforts to close gaps including the Dhanis and Kinney County segments. County delegates from Val Verde attend, with local officials named to coordinate promotion and highway work.
Washington announces Laredo Texas airdrome designated as a temporary airport of entry by the interdepartmental committee on international aircraft. San Diego California also received a similar designation.
