In McCook Nebraska on January 23 a Burlington Road passenger train was four hours late into Denver due to an elephant in the baggage car pulling the airbrake rope. Officials reported the animal repeatedly caused the engineer to stop while the conductor urged departure.
C B Wardlaw and B E Wilson plan to depart Sunday for Albuquerque to attend the National Wool Growers Association convention opening Tuesday. Wardlaw presides over Producers Wool and Mohair Co, Wilson is a banker with ranching interests. Also attending are Roy Hudspeth, Cunningham, Aldwell, and local officials including Mayor Dorsey Hardeman and H E McCullough with Mrs McCullough, among others in San Angelo planning Sunday departures.
The Spanish government launched air raids on insurgent strongholds near Madrid causing heavy damage. Rebels sought to seize Malaga, a key Mediterranean port, while renewing assaults on Madrid. Government seaplanes, from a German warship, bombed a southern airbase. In Paris, Blum prepared to urge halting “feverish” German armaments.
Sunshine in the Panhandle today presaged moderation of the cold wave that brought freezing weather as far south as Corpus Christi. Most of the state remained at freezing or below, and the easing is expected to be slow.

Mertzon January 23 reports First National Bank of Mertzon will pay a 20 percent dividend totaling $5,000 to 12 stockholders. Deposits for 1935 stood at $256,647.84 and grew to $401,108.27 for 1936. The bank, organized July 11, 1910, has never failed to pay a dividend.

In San Angelo on January 23 the two thousand dollar bond was set for T. J. Longacre former policeman charged with assault to murder W. B. Wilson police chief in a shooting at the police station last night. A grand jury had recently night resort slaving.
Senator Pittman introduced a joint resolution to permanent neutrality and cash and carry. The plan would extend the current law to May 1 and empower the President to restrict exports and require payment cash, banning US ships from transporting restricted goods to belligerents or neutrals. He did not claim administration support and planned talks with Hull. a more drastic plan may come from the Munitions Committee.
A 60 mile relay from the Azurite mine at 8000 feet through ice and snow ended with the death of Fred White a 25 year old miner in Okanogan Washington He died after an appendectomy performed by Dr E P Murdock and after a delayed surgery due to rarefied air complicating the mine operation Mountain men mushers and supporters recalls White and Murdock's courage as Bob Johnson and George Jonebraker aided the descent with eight dogs and a supporting aircraft crew.
Easterling of the Uvalde Production Credit Association board spoke at the annual meeting held in Uvalde. Directors George Jolley and James Amberson were re-elected, with holdovers J H Ashley Jr, John Stadler, and Easterling. Officers J H Ashley Jr president, George C Jolley vice president, R H Alvey secretary treasurer.
All members of the Del Rio Country Club board were re elected for 1037 at a Friday night business meeting in the club house. The roster includes W P Wallace J R M Crosby Grady Lowrey Aubrey Rowland Jo Turney Terrell R A Gilmer Albert Cauthorn H B Doran E White Billy Lewis and Tom Miller. Officers to be elected at a future special meeting. Dinner followed reports with about 50 members present and bridge played afterward.
William Clark Mitchell 54, white, sentenced to die for slaying a Negro, was given a third executive reprieve by Acting Governor John H Culkin. The execution was set for February 1 but stayed until April 15.
Washington January 23 4 Senator Alva B Adams chairman state s special wool investigation committee said today the hearings will be extended another month for investigators to finish reports for committee review. The findings cover practices at the nation s leading wool markets and will indicate whether further Senate hearings are needed. Chief investigator N Haskell said agents will file full details from Boston where 90 percent of wool transactions occur and from several smaller markets.
Russia opened the trial of 17 defendants including Karl Radek with claims of full confessions. They allegedly planned partition of Russia between Japan and Germany and aiding Japan in war against the United States. Exiled Leon Trotzky was alleged to have conspired with them to overthrow Stalin's regime.
Judge Brian Montague plans to leave Sunday for Sanderson to open the regular January term of District Court Monday. Grand jurors are summoned for 10 oclock Monday and petit jurors report Thursday. The docket lists five civil cases for trial and five criminal cases, continued from the last term.
New York report quotes Dorothy Thompson wife of Sinclair Lewis after her book Peasant Hitler was banned in Germany. She warns the new technique in international politics could trigger a one year world war as Germany suppresses her work. Thompson notes German censorship is cautious and fears a 30 year war driven by Japanese German anti Communist accord with sporadic outbursts.
