Cold wave grips the region with temperatures dropping to 1 degree in Def Ric and 28 to 32 across towns. Suffering mounts as gas main failures cut heat, shelters open in Shamrock Corsicana and other cities, and roadways ice over from Dallas to Amarillo.
About 74 persons are expected at the Southwest Texas Council meeting on the first floor of the Uvalde County courthouse at 7 o'clock Thursday night. E K Fawcett council president J P Fitch regional scout executive and other officials will attend. The event dovetails with a Highway 90 Association meeting to allow attendance at both events in Uvalde.
Oranges and grapefruit from John HL Luxson’s orchards in Cuntae Springs were placed on display at the Drn Rio Chamber of Commerce. The fruit survived the recent cold snap, according to C. B. Shipment, who delivered the produce to the chamber. No damage from the cold or protective devices was observed.
An attendance urge accompanies the Texas Highway Association meeting at Uvalde with plans for a 10 am start and 4 pm close. Del Rio residents are urged to return home that night while the event showcases a proposed highway from Sean Antonio to El Paso making Del Rio a strategic gateway. A free barbecue and entertainment will accompany the gathering chaired by H Ray of Uvalde with Fal Hamilton of Del Rio as president.
Wilbur Shaw, 30, a well known Tejas newspaper man and editor of the Dallasite weekly, was found dead in Dallas on January 22. Police pursue a robbery theory as Shaw apparently froze after being knocked unconscious. bruises and a head injury were noted and no money was found on the body after friends recalled he planned to cash a check.
About 45 young chickens burned to death in a blaze at a northeast city chicken house owned by J. L. Hill the contractor. The fire started near sacks tucked in the shed eaves and firefighters used 60 gallons of chemical extinguishant to control the flames. The structure was charred inside and located about 75 feet from Hill’s residence near the San Felipe Country Club.
In Austin on January 22 the Texas House tangled over the Stave Highway Commission after Rep. Boyd Terrell charged funds were misused to build an office facility in Tyler. A probe panel was named as a motion to quash indictments and a continuance failed amid testimony from defense and district officials.
Secretary Mellon told the House Expenditures Committee he supports moving prohibition enforcement authority from the Treasury to the Justice Department. The endorsement aligns with President Hoover’s law enforcement commission proposals considered by the committee.
A motion for rehearing of William Pruitt's death sentence was filed today in the Court of Criminal Appeals. Pruitt, a Dallas man, was convicted of murder.
Marriage licenses have been issued to Salvadore Villareal and Estefana Maldorado, and Juancio Hernandez and Eferanza Charles. Notice of intention to marry has been filed by Juan Valdez and Maria de Jesus Florez.
Sayeen Frederick Cook, former Arctic explorer, has his parole favored by the board after years in Lawrence jail following a misdemeanor conviction. News dispatches indicate final action by the Department of Justice will not occur for a week to ten days, with Attorney General Mitchell to approve.
FP. L. Woodson of Roanoke Va fell under a moving train near Pumpville on December 31 and remains serious. He is at Williams Sanitarium where his left arm was amputated hours after the collision. An x ray showed a fracture of his spinal column.
An industry survey compiling postal figures permits utilities and other commercial data for Del Rio and Val Verde County will be filed with the Information bureau of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce in Fort Worth. W A Bandeen of Stamford sent a questionnaire to H Wren, secretary, to be filled and sent to A F Robinson of the Alpine Chamber for district coordination.
Authorities report 42 year old J. R. Easton of Chicago abandons a $15 weekly job each winter and enters the poor house to endure the season until spring.
A Dallas party ended in a fatal shooting when a quarrel over a pistol erupted. Ray Chandler A. was hit by a bullet and died at the scene as officers investigated the confrontation among about 15 couples during the gathering. The exact cause remains undetermined.
In Austin on January 22, Judge Moore presses to fill the jury for John Brady's murder trial of Lehna Highsmith. Veniremen continue to be summoned as witnesses are excused until Monday.
Funeral services for William Draeger 80 long time Del Rio resident will be held at 9 20 Thursday morning at Sacred Heart Church. He died Tuesday at his Gunner Street home after weeks of illness. Survived by five daughters four sons 47 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. A native of Berlin he came to the U S as a government scout and Indian fighter. He long served as ditch superintendent for Val Verde Irrigation Co and lived in Del Rio 45 years.
R W Prosser owner of Del Rio holdings and Transcontinental ranch near Comstock, with Mrs Prosser of Los Altos, Cal, are visiting and registered at Hotel Roswell. Others staying there include J F Humphreys of Comstock, O H McAdams San derson manager and Mrs McAdams, Dee Finlay Port Worth, Lee L Russell San Antonio rancher, J M Corder Sanderson, and Mr and Mrs A R Merrill of Saginaw Mich visiting Carta Valley families.
Del Rio Independent School District Board urges voters to approve a $185000 bond issue in a February 1 special election. The plan funds new building space to handle growing enrollment across several campuses, with current elementary classrooms already at capacity and about thirty Mexican pupils needing half day sessions next spring.
Mayor R. E. Thomason of El Paso visited Del Rio on campaign business amid talk that Judge C C Belcher will withdraw from the race. Thomason planned to stay through Wednesday night and join a Del Rio delegation to Uvalde for Highway 90 Association talks. He touted long friendship with Belcher, pledged tariff support, and promised to back laboring people while highlighting West Texas needs and his legislative record.
Fire completely destroyed the First Baptist Church in Mexia on dan 22 causing an estimated loss exceeding $100,000. No injuries were reported. United Wrens assisted as flames consumed the building.
Washington reports a full recount of all ballots cast in Bexar County Texas in the last congressional election. The contest between August McCloskey and Harry M Wurzback to determine the House seat was referred to the election committee by Rep McCormack Democrat of Massachusetts.
A basketball game between the Pentagon Recreation Club of the Central Power and Light Company and a club from the Linois Pipe Line Company in Del Rio was canceled due to cold weather. No new date was set as of Wednesday noon.
A New York Central fast express collided with a bus carrying Brook Park schoolchildren in Berea Ohio killing nine pupils and the bus driver. Only one student, Mary Davidson, survived. Prosecutor Ray Miller ordered an investigation and three investigators were assigned to collect evidence before wreckage is cleared. Windows were fogged by frozen moisture hindering the driver’s view. The bus had only a single crossing warning sign. Engineer John Head said he saw the train too late to stop.
Del Rio’s own Everst Peirce, newly with Ziegfeld, appears in Warner Brothers’ Mission Dollar Collar opposite Matty Kemp. The home town star, trained in Del Rio and Los Angeles, toured via North Arights School and Broadway, with parents Mr and Mrs Peirce in Toesen. Her film debuts at the Princess after a Casino showing with Keaton’s Spite Marriage previously on screen.
Del Rio Rotary club Wednesday noon at Hotel Roswreit heard Roy M Andrews school superintendent discuss the bond election set for Feb 1. Hal Mamie of Highway 80 Association urged attendees and Jess M Cox of Del Rio with Ware Ren Ferner of Somerset Pa were guests.
