The marked similarity in appearance between Frank Scanlon of Menlo Park New Jersey and Bruno Hauptmann is reported to be used by the defense to confuse state witnesses who testified Hauptmann was near the Lindbergh home during the kidnapping. Scanlon was reportedly at Hopewell on business at the time.
Bonded indebtedness against the City of Del Rio totals 480000, records in the city hall revealed Friday. Of the amount 188000 is outstanding in tax bonds against the city water works which has an accepted value of 450000. Street bonds outstanding total 193000 and fewer bonds 99000, the records show. Indebtedness against the city has been reduced to the amount from around 5225000 in the last three years. At no time during the three years were suits filed for collection of taxes.
Jas C Netts manager of the Chamber of Commerce and Judge Clarence Herreford traveled to the state Highway Commission to advocate improvements for key routes. They seek upgrading Highway 85 from Del Rio to Quemado and extending Highway 82 from Clarendon to Turkey, with Maverick Kinney and others backing extension of Highway 131 from Spoford to Eagle Pass linking with 85.
Washington January 18 the administration and Congress moved forward with relief and social security programs. The first House hearings on the omnibus social aid bill with old age pensions and unemployment insurance were set for Monday. Secretary Ickes urged expedite spending of 4 billion dollars and called for a national inventory of feasible construction projects to put 3.5 million unemployed to work.
Anna Hauptmann lashed at state witness Ella Achenbach calling her lie as the trial nears the 13th day. Prosecutors say they have 60 witnesses ready and reiterate evidence tying Bruno Hauptmann to the Lindbergh kidnapping. Sergeant John Wallace testifies about Hauptmann's arrest and a $20 gold note found on him. The court adjourns over Saturday at the request of both sides.
B E Bell, 41, son of the late J E Bell and executor of the Bell estate, was found shot to death today on the Bell farm near Brady. A shotgun lay beside the body and a charge of shot penetrated the chest. An inquest was called.
A plane crashed in a cornfield six miles from the site as the observer and two airmen survived. Lieuts Henderson Wheeler and Richard Miller, from Indianapolis, were killed instantly in the wreck.
Houston's population around 300000 is cited as the turning point for rural to city representation. Rep George Moffett argues for rural favored maps with city representation capped at seven until population tops 700000, then one for each 100000 increase. The 44th Legislature debates redistricting amid rural versus urban priorities.
Teachers in Del Rio Independent School District distributed report cards at 2 p.m. Friday and announced the second semester starts Monday. Elementary pupils return at normal hours, while high and junior schools use Monday for program making. Seventh graders report 9 a.m., eighth graders 1 p.m., with high school schedule by class: sophomores 8:30, juniors 10:30, seniors 1:30, new students 2:15 p.m.
John H. Fahey chairman of the Home Owners Loan Corporation said at the White House an increase in lending scope would be requested. The corporation has allotted the 3 billion dollars of its authorized bond issue to Home Owners after discussions of restricting loans to that amount.
Anna Roosevelt Dall daughter of the President and John Boettinger former Chicago Tribune Washington correspondent wed in a simple ceremony at the Roosevelt house East 65th Street New York Judge J Frederick Kernochan officiated The President telephoned congratulations from Washington and the couple left for an announced destination Mrs Dall had divorced her first husband Curtis B Dall on July 30 in Minden Nevada
A rotary snow plow battered through 20 foot drifts at 10 000 feet on the Denver Rio Grande line to release 14 passengers and four crew members marooned atop Cumbres Pass. The stalled train, in a blizzard described as the worst since 1932, was kept warm with steam from two locomotives and a five day food reserve nearby. Two freight trains were also stalled at Los Pinos and Cresco, New Mexico.
Abernathy hosts its fifth annual poultry show on January 18 and 19 with R A Box supervising as superintendent. Judge Pat Murphree of Lubbock will judge entries while winners receive certificates and ribbons. only local district residents may compete for awards, though out of town breeders may exhibit birds.
In January 1847 ninety percent of a paved highway from Pecos to the Red Bluff dam site was completed with a $2,600,000 PWA program. The 40 mile pavement covers most of the route while a three mile che-topped graded road was finished from state highway 17 to the dam. The dam project employs about 150 workers and will likely grow.
A terse motto notes balancing wisdom with youthful energy and decisive action. The line echoes a call for measured judgment paired with vigorous implementation.
Arthur W. Cutten, noted grain speculator in the Chicago pit, is shown at a Washington cabinet tribunal hearing as his defense against charges of disguising grain future trades is argued. A month is expected before a decision on possible barring from U S grain exchanges.
The Rio Fire Department added two rubber gas masks with chest canisters to their gear. Masks supply oxygen via a tube to a chemical canister that absorbs smoke and poisons and converts carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide. Chief Harry Arfman notes masks are essential in many fires. Previously firefighters used World War I era gas masks.
Gainesville on January 18 reports Dr. W. A. Maddox formerly of Gainesville now living in Lubbock revived hand tooling on leather. He started 14 months ago and created The Combat elk relief on a 20 by 40 inch panel with bold animal figures and scroll borders. He also crafted traveling bags chaps and hunting scenes on leather using free hand designs. A leather goods maker said few in America could duplicate his work.
Representative T. J. Dunlap of San Marcos introduced a bill in the Texas House to reduce passenger automobile registration fees to three dollars. The measure aims to cut costs for vehicle owners and streamline state revenue. The proposal was presented in Austin on January 18.
Robert Mais 29 Walter Legenza 41 Martin Farrell 28 Edwin Gale 25 and Mary McKeever linked to the Tri-State Gang were taken into custody in New York. DOJ officials say arrests erase the gang’s record of robbery and murder. Mais and Legenza fled Richmond Virginia prison on September 29 after shooting a guard and wounding two others. they were under death sentence for killing a US mail truck custodian.
Oklahoma City January 18. General R A Sneed 90 a Civil War veteran and former secretary of state retires after a 75 year public service career in two states. He once led Confederate veterans and served in various posts before his 1926 return to the secretary of state office. He plans daily walks in retirement.
A northbound Missouri Pacific freight train struck a truck at a road crossing near Wynne Arkansas this afternoon killing a woman and two men. The crash occurred as the vehicle was on the tracks. Local authorities investigated the scene and identified the victims.
Cloudy tonight with unsettled conditions in Del Rio and vicinity. East Texas may see rain tonight and Saturday with colder air spreading northward. Yesterday’s high reached 78 and low 62. today’s minimum was 62. West Texas reports rain turning to snow and much colder temperatures in the north.
