Taxes for 1931 state and county are $51,862.15 paid through January 16. poll tax refunds must be claimed by January 31. Car and truck registrations lag far behind 1931, with 636 cars and 123 trucks registered to date. About 968 taxpayers paid poll taxes or filed exemptions while 40 refund claims remain.
One hundred eighty eight men were charged in Pecos County near Sheffield for staging game chicken fights. Officers found four dead cocks and about seven gallons of liquor with four dozen fighters trimmed for combat. Complaints will be filed in Fort Stockton. fines range from ten to one hundred dollars per defendant.

Karnes City Texas Jan 18 up county judge Tom Smiley filed libel suit asking 15000 damages against the San Antonio Express alleging the paper called him a Republican before a special election to succeed late representative Harry Wurzbach. Smiley, a lifelong Democrat, says the claim harmed his standing with Karnes County voters. Pontypool England A Siamese car walked back to Pontypool after being taken to Ross 30 miles away.
A letter from Joseph P. Tumulty praises Speaker John N. Garner as the most genuine figure in national life for a generation. Tumulty, Wilson’s longtime secretary, defends Garner amid political sparring sparked by Hearst’s praise of Garner as a 1932 presidential candidate.
Washington January 18. The La Follette Costigan unemployment relief bill to appropriate 375 million dollars for direct relief out of the Federal Treasury was approved today by the Senate subcommittee. The bill allocates funds to the states under a needs based system and includes self help measures.
A rose bloomed in the garden of Mrs. Bessie Whippie in Detroit New Year’s Eve as cold rain froze to ice. The report notes the bloom and the unusual hail described as large as summer roses.
The Del Rio Chamber of Commerce meets at 7 30 tonight in the Hotel Roswell dining room. No formal program will be followed. Speeches and music limited. Ballot counting for officers to highlight proceedings. Ballots mailed to members and returned to the secretary for opening and canvassing.
The State Highway Commission plans to let 23 highway and bridge contracts totaling about 1.329 million dollars for 160 miles of road in 14 counties and bridge work in nine counties. Projects include work on Highways 9 27 4 and 99 across Concho Pecos Real Upton Jeff Davis Guadalupe Gonzales counties and more with multiple box culverts and concrete deck girder bridges scheduled.

A second seizure occurred near Nuevo Laredo with two men held and the cabin loaded with alcohol cans. A prison term and fine were imposed in San Antonio for a landing from Nel Rio with liquor.
Berlin reports the government will hold a presidential election on February 28. The announcement confirms the date for the process and next steps toward selecting a new head of state.

J M Lea appointed field manager for Texas New Mexico and Arizona to keep staff intact with announcements expected January 20 or 21. 1931 wool and mohair outlook appears brighter as wool consumption through November exceeds last year by 50 million pounds.
The Texas Highway Department announces widening of shoulders on Highway No. 30 from Sonora toward Del Rio. Ditches will be graded and widened to four feet with sloped sides to reduce rollover risk. Work start date and duration are not definite, but the project will take several weeks.
Fort Worth January 18 reports J E Purgason 29 a steel plant foreman was shot to death on duty Henry Delaney 37 a former employee surrendered after the shooting but refused to make a statement.
Tonight and Tuesday should stay generally fair with a warmer trend in the north. Yesterday’s high was 74 and the low 48 with a 58 degree reading this morning. The north stays fair while the south grows cloudy with possible light rain in the lower Rio Grande valley, and frost is expected in the northeast tonight.
