Affiliation next year is hoped to earn college credits and strengthen local schools now retained by the Southern Association. The department was donated by Dr John R Brinkley after Mrs Cathryn Wayman urged Rotary Club support.
President Roosevelt expressed confidence that the new farm plan under the soil erosion and conservation laws would advance the AAA goals and promote a well rounded agricultural life. He hinted that new taxes might be needed after processing taxes were defeated but declined to elaborate.
Pilot Gerald Marshall of American Airlines died when the Douglas transport plummeted into Arkansas swamps Tuesday night. The crash killed 14 passengers and three crew members including Marshall.
Complete re organization of Val Verde Post No. 23 of the American Legion will be held Friday evening at 7 30 in the Chamber of Commerce. Officers will be elected as part of the reorganization effort and prospects for the meeting are described as very bright by Legionnaires.
National Youth Administration funds totaling 176 549 will fund park development along state highways in Texas. Lyndon B. Johnson announced 4 475 youths in 79 counties would be employed at $1.06 to $4.32 daily with a 46 hour month limit. Projects total about 350 000 and highway sites span numerous counties including Dallas Harris El Paso Cameron Hidalgo and Lubbock.
Senator Harrison of Mississippi opens debate asserting the baby bond bonus bill will become law with or without the President. Senate leaders push for passage by Friday night amid a leaked finance record suggesting new taxes to fund veterans debt. Morgenthau testimony is released. he declines to take a stand on the bill while noting total new money needed over 17 months could reach 5.5 billion dollars, excluding 5.8 billion in refunds.
Mrs. Clari tha Draper of Pontotoc near Llano turned 98 and is regarded as the region’s oldest resident. Born in Nashville, she married George Washington Draper and helped move cattle for government sales to Indians. After Union and Confederate clashes, she fled Colorado River dangers, swam the river with her children and horse as the Civil War began, crossing the Arkansas River to Texas while under fire.
