Art Kramer was awarded the Purple Heart for bravery in action in Alsace Lorraine during World War I. He survived hand to hand combat to defend a buddy as a member of the Rainbow Division, later serving in the 21st American Legion District. He is one of three remaining original 250 members of his company.

William F E Davenport local attorney announced he will seek the 51st district judge seat in 1936. He had been pardoned by Governor Miriam A Ferguson after a two year sentence for theft from a client. The district includes Tom Green Coke Sterling Irion and Schleicher Counties.
Autopsy operator Dr. Charles H. Mitchell testified in the Hauptmann trial that the Lindbergh baby died from a fractured skull caused by external violence. He stated the fracture occurred while alive and death was instantaneous or within minutes. The testimony followed the ransom-money details and discovery of the body in a May 12, 1932 thicket.
A 300 year old bold relief figure of Shah Abbas I of Persia plus an inscribed tablet were sold in London for 200 dollars. The artifact bears the tablet praising him as the sun of his time to whom the universe prostration.
Tax data from Lyle Ss. Almond shows 235 poll taxes issued and 4,297.03 collected on 1934 taxes through January 15, far below last year’s 9,327.57 and 577. Almond notes election-related changes and explains moratorium dates. He clarifies January 31 as the tax deadline and April 1 for car licenses to avoid penalties.

In Austin on January 17 a two way Senate attack emerged on the proposed child labor constitutional amendment. Opponents first offered a substitute to materially modify the amendment and then re introduced ratification to secure swift disapproval.
After days of damp weather about 60 men resumed work Thursday on the re routed Highway No 3. Crews laid three caliche base courses totaling twelve inches before a two inch asphalt top. The project eliminates 14 bad turns an underpass water hazard and a grade crossing three miles east of the city.
News from Saarguemines reports refugees pouring into France after clashes with anti Nazi forces. Two communists were killed at Neunkirchen and about a dozen others were beaten in other towns of the Saar Basin.
City hall announced a water main expansion from South Main Street toward Garden Park with eight inch and six inch lines and new fire hydrants. About $5,000 in materials and labor financed by a $5,000 loan from Dr. John R. Brinkley will fund the project and a four inch line to the Brinkley Estate nearby.
Three boys aged about 12 to 13 were paroled to their parents after hearings in Judge J. P. Aderhold's Justice Court. They faced charges of stealing bicycles and bicycle parts and may return to court if they misbehave. Sheriff Steinmetz reported more wheel parts recovered, stored at Val Verde County jail, with police listing more stolen items among recent juvenile cases.
A Texas public record shows Governor Miriam A. Ferguson granted 5 142 clemencies during her two year term, while former Governor R S Sterling issued 5 359. The tally compares final hour pardons to the prior administration’s clemencies.
