Counsel for Bruno Hauptmann arranged to seek a writ of habeas corpus from the Federal District Court. Denial of the writ and of stay of execution would leave Hauptmann with only a possible reprieve. The writ contends constitutional rights were violated during the trial. Governor Hoffman returned from New York and his decision on a reprieve remained unknown. It was believed he might wait until the last minute, hoping Hauptmann would break.
Del Rio Independent School District urges tax payments by January 31 to avoid 10 percent penalty 6 percent interest and a $1 delinquent fee. About $8,000 has been paid on the 1935 roll of $51,577.10. UVALDE, Jan. 14. Leaders of the Boy Scouts movement in Uvalde voted against affiliating the local troop with the Concho Valley Council based in San Angelo. They also agree to raise $50 a month to support Scout work here under leaders Charles Leel and Rev. John P.ter. The Uvalde troop had been with the old Southwest Texas Council, which ceased to function years ago, leaving the troop without a council until nearby units joined others.
Lupe Arreola a 23 year old Mexican from Carlsbad New Mexico was found guilty by a district court jury Monday of forgery with a two year term imposed. He passed a $20 forged check on November 16 1935 to Steve Salvatierra bearing the name Mrs C C Belcher while in Val Verde County. Dee Newton was jury foreman. He faces trial today on another indictment for forging Roger Gillis's name to a $25 check.
In Guanaoay Cuba three abductors were killed in a gun battle with Cuban soldiers hours after Paulino Gorgostiza Jr. 28, son of a prominent manufacturer, was abandoned by his captors in the foothills nearby. The victim survived. Eleven suspects were arrested after the ransom demand of 50 000.

San Antonio January 14 A derailing attempt on the Missouri Pacific Sunshine Special was foiled when a switching crew found an open switch and a mudspattered warning signal near the city limits. The discovery occurred about 30 minutes before the train passed. The signal appeared to have been covered to hide the danger.
In Eagle Pass on January 14 Sheriff H. H. Robinson had all marble gambling devices removed from local establishments after a Supreme Court ruling declared them illegal. The sheriff stated the machines were not destroyed and warned owners not to let people play on them, calling the penalty heavy.
