In Washington the Comptroller J F T OConnor reports progress in reopening national banks after the holiday period. Of 1 437 failed banks, 491 were allowed to resume normal business and 163 liquidated with full depositor payout. 335 more plans approved while 338 banks remain in receivership.
City officials in New Braunfels appoint Gilbert Reinarz A R Ludwig and Jon Dietz to audit the city books.
Tax data show collections lagging, with poll taxes due by January 31 and motor vehicle licenses by February 1. Tax Collector Lyle S. Almond warns longer lines and heavier workload if payments do not accelerate before the deadlines.
Del Rio Independent School District will start final exams Tuesday to close the first semester. High school and junior students take three two hour periods from 8 to 11, 10 to noon, and 1 to 3. Primary grades have no examinations and keep the usual schedule.
Senate investigators heard that the day before Michigan's bank holiday Henry Ford refused further aid to the Guardian Group of Detroit. Edsel Ford testified he had advanced over 10 million dollars to support the Guardian Group, which had not been repaid. He said his father was incensed by the demand for more help from frozen banks.

CHICAGO January 12. The selection of a jury to decide the guilt or innocence of Dr. Alice Wynekoop, charged with murdering Rheta Wynekoop, continued as crowds gathered outside the courthouse. The court was orderly, with only veniremen and witnesses admitted inside.
The Crane Company of San Antonio guarantees delivery of a new boiler for the Del Rio courthouse by January 22 at a total cost of 474.85. Bids were opened with Crane the lowest, the highest bid reaching 695. The old boiler broke on Sunday and gas stoves heat the courthouse and jail in the interim. District Court sits in the Federal Building while the boiler is installed.
In Anchorage Alaska on January 12 under the Northern Lights a large sub Arctic rabbit round up aims to capture alive thousands of snowshoe rabbits. Alaska Game Commission officials direct a team of 50 Indians to stock the Aleutian Islands and other areas. Director Frank Dufresne says the rabbits will serve as food for fur bearing animals and provide sustenance for residents.
E K Fawcett was elected president of the Del Rio Wool and Mohair Company at the annual meeting and stockholders meeting Thursday. George E ONeill was re elected manager and A Madison resigned due to ill health. R M Hamilton became first vice president and J S Holman of Sonora second vice president with E T Rucker joining the board. The existing directors include E K Fawcett R M Hamilton Judge J J Foster Geo E ONeill and E T Rucker of Del Rio E E Sawyer and J S Holman of Sonora.
Residents along Garfield Avenue report milk disappearing from doorsteps for weeks. Pint bottles are taken and often found discarded on lawns. the thief seems to rotate houses, targeting one at a time in cycles.

J D Jones a 44 year old Smithville employee of the M E T Railroad was instantly killed at Bastrop yards while braking a moving coal car on the Katy freight local. He fell under the car wheels as it moved and was crushed.
The Jones Bill for two billion dollars in federal farm loan bonds is favorably reported by the House Agriculture Committee. It creates a farm mortgage corporation to manage the bonds and will be considered by the House next week.
The Del Rio Chamber of Commerce has received and begun distributing 25000 folders with pictures and literature on Del Rio and Villa Acuna. Compiled by W. M. Abbey Paul J. Poag and H. Lippe the folders are mailed at 75 daily. Manager Jas C Netts notes inquiries have surged from five to 75 daily from the United States and Canada. Folders were given to banquet guests Tuesday evening.
Val Verde Post No. 23 of the American Legion named two committees at its Thursday Elks Club meeting. Centilli Logan Clark Puquay will cooperate with the auxiliary on registration of children of ex service men, while Centilli Gilbert Montague join the Americanization program with schools to promote patriotism and citizenship. The drum and bugle corps was invited to attend meetings. plans aim to boost membership and attendance. Four ex service men have enrolled at the re employment office since the campaign began for registering unemployed veterans in the county.
Robert H. Gore of Florida resigned today as governor of Puerto Rico. He cited ill health as the reason for relinquishing the post and the President accepted the resignation. General Blanton Winship was nominated to succeed Gore.

AMARILLO, Jan. 12. December in the Panhandle was the warmest on record with a mean temperature 4.7 degrees above zero and over 10 degrees above normal. The high of 80 on December 1 set a new record. A trace of rain prevented a total moisture blank. For the year rainfall was 8.7 inches deficient and every month ran above normal.
Canned meats from San Antonio arrive in Del Rio and are unloaded at the J. L. Barnes warehouse. County relief administrator E. 8. Block says distribution should start Monday with 3 576 cans plus soup stock and hamber mer. A carload of smoked pork is expected soon for distribution.

Edsel Ford told reporters that Ford Motor expects a 75 percent pickup over last year and that 1934 business, especially in automobiles, looks much brighter. He praised NRA wage policy as a stimulant and said wages have generally risen to match Ford's levels.
