A Prickly Pear column riffs on Huey Long backing opponents of big oil in Louisiana. It mocks long held beliefs about honesty, compares big and small men, laments news excess, and jests about media bias and a pending Hauptmann trial.
A Holland Texas farmer tests a devilish crow-control scheme by inserting horse hair into corn kernels. Birds eat the kernels but hair irritates throats, driving frantic thrashing and fatal deaths. Fifty four crows die in the first batch.
Business optimism flowed at the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce annual banquet where 20 directors for 1935 were elected. Sam H Walk praised staff and thanked members. Jas C Netts summarized 1934 activities including XER broadcasts and 1 892 inquiries in January rising to 5 025 in February.
Two Del Rio men are jailed in Val Verde County after garden hose thefts and other stolen items. Police recovered the hose and say an $8 hat was taken from a local store. Sheriff A. E. Steinmetz arrested and lodged the pair in jail.
R L Bradley will head the Volunteer Fire Department for the coming year after Tuesday night’s officer election at the fire station. Elected: R L Bradley president, Joe Youngblood VP, Alfred Bochat secretary-treasurer, David Young captain Company 1, George Randolph captain Company 2, Bob Nicholson captain Company 3, Earl Scudday and G L Dyer fire police, G L Dyer Jr mascot. Past officers listed. Clifton Boies elected to membership as he turns 18.
Five indictments were returned Tuesday afternoon by the Del Rio grand jury in District Court. The charges include two forgery counts, one felony theft, one burglary and one count of transporting possessing and controlling a narcotic drug. The panel was impaneled Monday at the January term with Judge Brian Montague presiding. foreman J. E. White led jurors Jesus Salvatierra Siler Mey John Dissler E. K. Adams F. J. Barrett John H. Garza George R. Baker A. F. Fitzpatrik H. Lippe John W. Ingram and P. W. Kelly.

George Collett went on a night of killings in Copper Creek Kentucky killing seven people including his wife and her relatives and two others and wounding another before shooting himself when a posse closed in. Authorities traced the killings to a land dispute among Mrs Collett’s kin with some blame placed on efforts to stop Collett from stealing a car to flee.
Justice of the Peace J P Aderhold presided over trespassing charges against three men with one fined $14 total. A. D. Ferris, a Del Rio stranger, was found guilty of vagrancy and fined $18. Ferris was jailed for failure to pay and was taken into custody by Sheriff A E Steinmetz as investigations continue.
W. F. Jourdan, county superintendent of Public Instruction, returned early Wednesday from Austin where he attended a two day session with practically all state county superintendents.
Sam H Walk was chosen president of the Chamber of Commerce for the third consecutive year at the first meeting of the new board elected Tuesday. A G Edwards was re elected first vice president and R H Hurd re elected second vice president. J Autrey Walker succeeds W S Stevenson as treasurer. Jas C Netts was re elected secretary manager. Netts will complete his third year in April. President Walk will appoint a budget committee and a program committee for 1935, to be announced January 22 for board approval.
In Menard Texas prosecutors say the state will seek the death penalty for Fielding Hammond and co defendant in the fatal shooting of W R Tomlinson. The defense considers move for change of venue and plans to present witnesses to counter the claim of a fair trial. Judge Lamar Thaxton will preside as the docket opens with the Opp case first.
Bryan Braley and his wife and children plan to move to Dallas where Braley has secured a position with the alcohol tax unit of the Federal Internal Revenue Department. He leaves the Del Rio weather bureau station where he has served since November 1, 1931, coming from Texarkana. The move brings a higher salary, and a successor at Del Rio has not been named.
Chris Parker, injured in the Que mado crash that killed Miss Maxine Westbrook and injured her sister Miss Marine, left Gates Hospital in Eagle Pass on Tuesday after treatment since the accident. He was reported in critical condition shortly after.
J M Lea, organizer for the Texas Wool and Mohair Growers, urges a February 5 meeting to merge the Shop and Goat Raisers, American Angora Goat Breeders, and Texas Angora Goat Raisers groups. He outlines votes by ballot, broad participation, and support from warehouses, banks, and producers, with $10,000 to $15,000 already pledged and significant warehouse and producer commitments statewide.
Governor elect Alfred designated Gerald Mann of Dallas as secretary of state to succeed W. W. Heath on January 15. Edward Clark of San Augustine named first secretary to the governor. Ranger Captain George Johnson fired upon by a car as rangers protect a grand jury probing alleged moonshining.
I. E. Shorty Gartin, former Sanderson ranchman, died in Bisbee Arizona on Tuesday. After leaving Sanderson he worked in mining in Arizona. He is survived by a brother Clarence Gartin in Arizona.
Governor Miriam A Ferguson proposes immediate repeal of Texas prohibition and enactment of a 2 percent general retail sales tax to finance government operations. She calls the liquor tax plan a quick revenue source and labels prohibition a stupendous failure. Walter Woodul of Houston to be sworn lieutenant governor January 15, just before James Allred's gubernatorial inauguration.
In Austin on January 9 a set of constitutional amendments was introduced seeking repeal of prohibition, a sales tax, and old age pensions. A joint resolution for elections on these amendments passed the Senate, which also named committee chairs Will D. Pace of Tyler and John S. Redditt of Lufkin as State affairs and finance chairmen. An officers election was ordered in the House.
Dr John F. Condon testified at the Hauptmann trial for the Lindbergh kidnapping naming Bruno Richard Hauptmann as the man who met him and received the $50,000 ransom. He identified notes from the exchange and the three holed symbol signature.
