Washington January 9 UPI Charles G Dawes looms as possible opponent to President Hoover for the Republican nomination. Dawes may sign as ambassador to Great Britain after completing work as chairman of the American delegation to the Geneva disarmament conference. Dwight F Davis resigns as governor general of the Philippine Islands and Theodore Roosevelt Jr is appointed governor of Porto Rico to fill the Philippines post.
Pandale School sixth grader Moss Mills won first prize in the county wide prevention poster contest announced by County Superintendent Marie Grande Adams. Herbert Walker of Comstock School placed second and Major Jones earned third. Prizes were $5, $3 and $1.
A man calling himself a minister was released from Del Rio jail after a four month forgery sentence and headed to El Paso to join his father. He admitted writing bad checks in several Texas cities including Brackettville and San Antonio, and was arrested after cashing checks at Hotel Roswell. He had told a Lions Club audience he sought preaching work in Brackettville.
Gallipolis Ohio authorities say two youths Albert Reyvmer aged 15 and Ellsworth Mowyer 17 have confessed to burning the log cabin of James White 40 near Gallipolis last spring. White died and seven of his eight children were killed. The boys are inmates at the Boys Industrial School in Lancaster Ohio. Investigators doubt the testimony pending further inquiry.
The famed Presidio gray mule, long a legendary rum smuggler across the Texas border, was killed after a confrontation with hijackers guarding a liquor cargo. Once traded between smugglers, the mule endured capture attempts, escapes, and repeated ownership changes before meeting his end.
Va Verde County Commissioners Court will meet in regular session Monday at 10 a m in the county judge office. Judge Roger Thurmond says only routine business will be considered at that time.

Mrs L B Cox sister in law of Dr Geo W Cox of this city died Friday night at 9 15 oclock at her Ozona home. She was from a pioneer Ozona family and her husband a noted Crockett County rancher. Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 pm at the Methodist church. Survivors include three sons Kenneth Cox San Angelo Vernon Cox Ozona and L B Cox Ozona and five grandchildren. Dr and Mrs Cox went to attend the funeral.
A man and a woman claiming to be husband and wife were detained by the sheriff on suspicion of car theft. They were in a Nebraska licensed car purchased from Floyd King in Lubbock. The couple said they were from Grand Island Nebraska and King was from there. authorities wired Grand Island police for instructions.

Berlin dispatch reports the International Reparations and Debt conference will meet in Lausanne Switzerland on January 25. The gathering follows a recommendation from the Young Plan advisory committee evaluating Germany's ability to resume reparations after the Hoover moratorium.
Washington January hearing on the Del Rio and Northern Railway Company permit to build from Del Rio to Sonora is anticipated soon by the Interstate Commerce Commission. The Winter Garden Belt Railway case, for Quemada to Asherton, is set for January 14. Mrs Rosa Rau Alpine was awarded a divorce from Joe Rau Mellard in District Court by Judge Joseph Jones. The three year old Helen Francis was awarded to the maternal grandfather W. R. Wells of Hill County, after prolonged testimony from witnesses in Menard Sonora Del Rio and Hill County. The judge ruled the child’s best interests require custody with the grandmother’s father rather than either parent.
David Hernandez twenty from San Felipe suffered a severe mishap Friday afternoon while chopping wood. A miscue resulted in the amputation of the great toe of his right foot, ending a brief holiday.
A man accused of shoplifting at the Reoach-Me Lymont store was captured and jailed in Val Verde County after injuring himself during a failed escape attempt. Sheriff Whistler fired a warning shot to halt the fugitive as officers recovered several purses from the suspect. A doctor treated him at the scene.
Mexico raises costs at border entry points effective immediately. Tourist cards jump from one peso to two pesos while special crossing permits switch to ten pesos. The Interior Department notified chambers of commerce to relay the change to travelers heading to Mexico from the United States.
In Ocracoke North Carolina David Gaskill and Carl Jacobson harpooned a nine foot shark weighing about several hundred pounds. As the shark neared within five feet of the boat Gaskill hurled the harpoon striking the shark in the back. The boat was pulled several hundred yards down the channel before the shark was secured with block and tackle.
State maintenance program funds 1 009 490 dollars support road work to widen shoulders on Highway 3 from the Kinne County line to Del Rio. County provides right of way and sewer relocation. route will be 100 feet wide across about 12 miles. Langtry area projects cost about 155 682 dollars with county cost sharing. Regular State crews perform the shoulder widening, not a special contract.
