Del Rio officials detail battle against traffic drunkards. Judge CD Smith says cases from traffic violations will be disposed of per law. Police chief Henry Thidge vows cooperation with higher courts and full enforcement of statutes.
City officials after the grand jury report note many legal obstacles in traffic enforcement. Police cases often transfer to county state for prosecution, but all 66 operations once offered may return in the future as possible.
Pirot reaction to grand jury report to Judge Joseph Jones Wednesday morning shows the group discussed moving cases to District Court on felonies. A grade school pupil accused of stealing a bicycle appeared before Chief Merry Bridee n Thursday morning. The bicycle was recovered and returned. the boy was dismissed as a minor. District Court plans to hear the case Thursday afternoon. The bicycle was found hidden behind SP rails.
A Ford coupe confiscated December 6 by federal officers for liquor in the trunk was sold at public auction in the Federal Building at 10 o clock Thursday morning. The purchaser was Louis Gottwald at a price of fifteen dollars.
Del Rio and Vicinity report little temperature change for tonight and Friday with a high around 70 and a low near 37. West and East Texas fairs expect similar mild variation and no quick temperature shifts.
Jeff Davis County ranchers donate large tracts for a Davis Mountains State Park project. The plan includes a 20 000 acre Pawlkes Ranch stretch and a scenic loop road from Fort Davis to the Limpia Canyon. The Highway Commission seeks a right of way before road construction and the Legislature is expected to create the park to open Texas scenery to tourism.
Brady, a 65 year old Christmas card peddler, was stabbed to death in a dispute over 35 cents. Eddie Walsh, 69, Brady’s associate, is charged with murder after admitting a heated argument and scuffle prior to the stabbing. Police report details remain unclear.
Chicago Tribune reporter Alfred Lingle was killed by a St Louis gunman identified by multiple witnesses. Leo Brothers, tied to the case, was charged and held since December 21 after a secret investigation. State Attorney J. Swanam said there is no question he is the killer.
Rey Chastang elected chief says no changes in Del Rio volunteer fire department staffing. The same four paid drivers and 24 volunteers will continue, with drivers arranging shifts to ensure three on duty. Chastang anticipates future growth may require another fire station. Names listed include Joan Schrier Albert Wilkerson Neil Billings and O K Williams.
Late reports from the Jeff Love No. 1 oil well drilled by Evans and Gant in Kerr County indicate continued water production. The well near Del Rio is being pumped intermittently and operators expect the head to drain before oil flow improves as new locations arise within five miles.

Merchants planning to attend the annual banquet of the Retail Merchants Association are urged to reserve by Friday evening January 30 at the Hotel Roswell. John Rowland, president, announced the event to be held at 7 30 p m with Alphonso Johnson of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce as principal speaker. Johnson will address Del Rio merchants and their salesmen on business conditions and future surveys. He will also speak to city schoolchildren on business basics and career plans.
The truck crop reporting service notes spring crops under way in the lower Rio Grande valley and Winter Garden. Potatoes tomatoes and snap beans are being planted. December is favorable for Texas truck crops. the first killing frost in Winter Garden and nearby areas occurred December 17, three weeks later than usual. Blue mold and bud worm harmed the spinach crop.
Moore Park on San Felipe Creek island to be leased for 99 years to the American Legion Rotary and Lions clubs. The trustees approve the lease and plan to hire a Southern Pacific landscape expert to layout the grounds and survey the island later this month. A swimming pool and playground are planned, with fundraising to come and the American Legion already holding $600.
Aurelio Peres a minor was fined 12.70 in Corporation Court by Judge C D Smith after a collision on the Canal street bridge between Del Rio and San Felipe. A touring car driven by him struck a truck driven by Felipe Martinez, with both vehicles badly damaged.
Arkansas farmers appeal to Red Cross and civic leaders for food to avert starvation. Since December the Red Cross has issued rations to 1,141 families, with about 51 percent of copppers depending on aid. Roughly $500 a day in food is distributed.
Merchant L. W. Lipscomb cautions that the $45 million drouth relief appropriation will not suffice without food loans for farmers. He argues farmers need immediate cash to buy food and supplies amid the drought.
Six prisoners escaped from Hill County jail in Hillboro last night after obtaining a key to the cells from a trust. The escapees are Henry Warner J W Naugie Willie Turley O B Griswold Odell Wayne and Ernest Jones.
About 25 Del Rio men attended the opening session of meetings in San Angelo between the Texas Wool and Mohair Warehouse Association and five wool and mohair co operatives under the National Wool Marketing Corporation. The group adopted resolutions mourning the death of Del Rio banker C. P. Scales. Judge Roger Gillis was invited to share updates on Texas wool held in Boston.

Three major mining projects near Shafter Presidio County and Alpine Boquillas will reopen with new mills and equipment. American Metals plans a February start at Shafter with a redesigned mill to process ore from about 40 claims within 12 miles. R Trowbridge begins Boquillas operations using 500 wagons and mules to move ore 207 miles to Cuarto Cienegas and Monterrey for smelting. I A Owens leases Bird Mines east of Alpine to test ore via diamond core drilling and sampling.
Treasury orders require border port officials to adjust hours for international bridges along the Rio Grande. Del Rio to Villa Acuna bridge will continue on current timings from 8 a.m. to midnight. Captain Luke Dowe of the customs department stated the rest of the Texas border ports will follow the updated schedules.
The Lions Club will host a noon luncheon next Thursday to honor Coach A L Anthony, Assistant Coach Drury Wood, and 23 Wildcats players with a banquet at 7 pm in the Hotel Roswell dining room. Guests may reserve plates via Lions Club members. The club also plans a similar banquet for the girls basketball team and coaches to close the season. A lease and deed to Moore's Park were signed as reported.
Southern Pacific officials report Del Rio job cuts are small with 19 depot workers and eight to ten of 24 enginemen on extra lists. About 25 in mechanical clerical depts cover work once done by 36. Some layoffs happened last June in the car department. Plans call for no further broad reductions.
Mexican authorities in Saltillo Coahuila denied Shawnee Indian chiefs the right to possess a land grant issued in 1820. They asserted the grant covered land now in Texas near Nacogdoches and disputed the tribe’s claim amid negotiations with Salish officials.
