In Conrof Texas on January 7 burglars carried off a Montgomery bank vault from Pitt State Bank. They pried a side door, dug through a brick wall, and loaded a 3500 pound safe onto a truck. About $1500 in cash and securities vanished, with $8000 reportedly missing in each of several bags.
Governor Moody proposes using prison labor to construct a 700 mile state road system under the State Highway Department. The plan aims to relieve idleness among about 5000 prisoners and includes seeking legislation to implement the prison locating committee's majority report favoring a new plant near Austin.
A suspect in the Lohn bank heist near Trickham was killed by Deputy Sheriff Bob Sumrall of Coleman County after a gun battle. The dead man, about 22, identified by cashier W. F. Roberts Jr., is tied to the $1,557 theft. a companion remains at large. Sumrall earns a $5,000 reward.
After a two week Christmas break, Central and high schools welcomed several new registrations. Superintendent Andrews noted crowded rooms but expressed hope that improved conditions would allow full schedules when the second semester begins. The new term starts Monday, January 7.

The 19 year old Bishop remains in Del Rio hospital with a fractured spine after a Pord coupe driven by Brown overturned after hitting a dip at high speed. Brown suffered cuts and bruises while Bishop’s mother reports no major change in his condition despite a good night’s rest.
The special election for the 87th district will be held February 8 instead of February 4. Gov proclamation moved the date to the second Saturday. Maverick Kinney Val Verde Terrell and Brewster Counties comprise the district. Only candidate thus far is J Turney Terrell.
Coast Guard officials report about 150 ships supply liquor from foreign ports to the Northern Atlantic coast. The admiralty service notes Rum Row era is ended but illicit shipments continue to operate along the coast.

Del Rio officials plan talks in San Antonio to urge Western Air Express to route the San Antonio El Paso line through Del Rio. Michael Oliver, Vern Gurry, and H Wren will discuss requirements and conditions, noting Del Rio's airport plans and strategic location for new airline connections.
Ten horses were reported stolen from ranches of Jim P. Wilson and James Wil Cotter about 50 to 60 miles below Alpine. Will Cotter and Mr. Winn traced the trail ten miles through Smugglers Pass toward the Rio Grande, where the horses may have crossed into Mexico.
Harrison Hamer of Del Rio, formerly a customs officer and Texas Ranger, has been named deputy sheriff under Reagan County Sheriff A. W. Billingsley. He previously served as deputy inspector for the Sheep and Goat Raisers Association of Texas.
Tom Smith of Eldorado plans to enter the Schleicher County sheriff race while incumbent August Leudecke contemplates running again. The report highlights potential contest between the challenger and the current sheriff.
Grading of the south portion of the recently purchased airport site is underway under F J Lehmidt city streets superintendent. Five to ten men have labored for a week clearing cans bones and debris. South part will be ready in a few days. the north end requires more work.
United Press reports William Desmond Taylor murder witness Henry Peasey was located in Northern California. Peasey says he worked as Taylor’s valet for eight months and heard voices at Taylor’s home. Taylor, a film director, was shot dead at his Los Angeles residence. Another suspect, Edward Sands, sought for years, remains at large as a global broadcast search unfolds.
Doland Kluesner, 31, poured gasoline on a dining room stove in Indianapolis on New Year's Day. The blast engulfed five relatives in flames. the mother saved three children by tossing them from a window. Kluesner and his wife were dying, with little hope for three other children.
Funeral services for J. L. Birge age 62 formerly of Del Rio were held in Austin at Cook funeral home after he died in a local hospital following a lingering illness. Rev. E. P. Barton officiated and Birge had worked for the L. B. Price Mercantile Company, including a year in Del Rio before moving to Austin.
Mrs. F. E. Brotherton of Comstock recently underwent an operation at Williams Sanitarium and was reported doing well Tuesday afternoon. The expected date of her discharge home had not been determined.
Del Rio Little Theatre will produce Dulcy by Kaufman and Connelly with Lynn Fontaine in the cast. Tryouts are set this week at the Central School Auditorium under the play committee led by Mrs B G Stafford.
Brewster County Chamber of Commerce will spend over 7000 to promote Alpine in 1930. The budget includes 1000 for advertising and 350 for West Texas Chamber of Commerce dues. Henry Fletcher of Alpine was elected president and A P F Robinson will again serve as secretary.
Three divorce cases filed in Judge Joseph Jones' district court were dismissed Tuesday on motion of the plaintiffs. The cases disposed of include Tacy Fitch versus Charles Fitch, W. M. Moot versus Mary Moot, and Adolph Varducci versus May Varducci.
Secretary of State Stimson said on the eve of departing for the London naval conference that the United States will push to continue the battleship building holidays and seek to limit the construction of cruisers destroyers and submarines.
A four peso visa fee will be collected on exportations of building materials to Villa Acuna as per Mexican government ruling. The fee applies to the manifest visa regardless of quantity, with several import regulation changes taking effect January 1. The peso exchange rate stood at 48.22 cents, and Del Rio to Villa Acuna movement averages about 2000 consignments monthly.
Dallas and Waco authorities filed robbery with firearms charges against Lawrence Teague and Albert W. Kanady in a kidnapping case involving Dr. C. C. Swift Jr. of Waco. The suspects are jailed in Waco without bond. the State says they coerced the doctor to Dallas where he was robbed of $10 and a watch, with Mrs. Kanady also implicated.
Funeral services set for Oliver H Polley a wealthy East Texas landowner killed in a head on auto crash between San Benito and Brownsville. The crash injured three others one of whom was expected to die as of January 7 United Press reports.
Corpus Christi January 7 William D McCalib a Laredo border patrolman stationed at Alice was shot and killed by Pedro Rabondo an escaped convict from the Texas penitentiary McCalib and Buck West were in a cafe when Rabondo shot McCalib in the back West returned fire wounding Rabondo and captured him after a three shot exchange
Two persons were burned to death and five others were seriously injured when a fire partly destroyed the Rice Hotel in Pittsburgh. Police believe arson caused the blaze. the fire started in a bundle of rags.
A cold wave arrives Tuesday night with a chance of rain or snow in Prospect per local weather bureau. Cooler air has been expected, with Kansas City reporting a rapid drop from 52 to 26 degrees in one hour. Cloudy and unsettled tonight and Wednesday.
Sheriff M. L. Bud Whistler returned to Del Rio from Uvalde after receiving medical attention for injuries from an automobile overturn near Vine Karone. He suffered internal injuries of a minor nature and has recovered.
Representative Hudspeth introduced a bill to authorize the Fort Hancock Bridge Company to construct maintain and operate a toll bridge across the Rio Grande at Fort Hancock. The measure aims to grant authority for construction and operation pending passage.
A notice of intention to marry was filed Tuesday morning by Jesus Vasquez and Ernestina Florez announcing their plan to wed.
