Four men armed with machine guns and torches raided the First National Bank at MIACO Oklahoma January 6. They loaded a 4900 pound safe onto a truck and escaped north after failing to crack the vault. cashier WF Roberts was locked in the vault during the robbery. no shots were fired.
Governor Moody fixes February 4 for a special election to fill the 87th district seat vacated by Roger Thurmond’s resignation. Turney Terrell of Del Rio, son of Agriculture Commissioner George B Terrell, is named as a candidate for representative. The district includes Brewster, Terrell, Val Verde, Kinney, and Maverick counties, with a 30 day minimum between proclamation and vote. The move aims to elect a representative before the upcoming legislative special session.
Vernon H. Ramsey and Miss Evelyn Miller of Waukegan Illinois face a Mann Act trial in Federal Court here after flying in from Chicago. They have carried passengers and conducted aerial photography as part of their activities. Miss Miller to testify.
N W Hazelwood and Melvia Lindsay obtained a marriage license at the county clerk's office Sunday. Notice of intention to marry has been filed by Ernestina Florez and Jesus Vasquez.
An explosive device wrapped as a Christmas gift detonated while being opened in a Maryland suburban kitchen near Washington. An 18 year old bride, Naomi Brady, died as her mother Mrs Mora Hall and four siblings were seriously injured along with a neighbor, Stuart Carneal, near the blast site.
Judge Joseph Jones announced that the January term of his district court will convene around 7 p.m. Tuesday for the appearance docket. The court opened Monday for the term and will likely move to trial after the appearance cases are called.

In Columbus Ohio Mrs James Scribner fought smoke and flames to save her five children from a burning home today only two survived. Florence five was found dead under the kitchen sink while two others died after being carried from a burning bed. Two boys escaped by jumping from windows and the mother remained hospitalized in shock.
City police announce stricter enforcement of speeding laws after 11 arrests from Saturday and Sunday, with cases dismissed earlier. Police say the ordinance will be enforced rigidly going forward.
January report that two Mexican men Juan Gonzales and Salvado Bruno were found shot dead in the Rio Grande near Mercedes. A third man is missing presumed murdered. A Mexican suspect is arrested while another implicated man is sought. Manuel Zamora held in Edinburg jail pending case.
George West Texas report states Jane Roberto Martinez admitted involvement in the murder of Dr J A Ramsey Mathis physician linked to Leahy crime. A jury sentenced Martinez to five years imprisonment after a confession detailing enticement, Leahy’s attack with an iron bar, and body disposal near a shallow grave.
Fifteen coast guardsmen will be tried on charges of pilfering from the captured British rum runner Flor Del Mar. The announcement came from the coast guards base in New London Connecticut. Twenty four guardsmen were arrested for intoxication.
Sheriff Bud Whietler plans to chase two indicted bond salesmen, Ben E. New and E. W. Lasater, to Dallas for transfer to the county. Three indictments total 13 000 dollars bond per man in separate cases, with notes and clothing purchases cited as misrepresented items. State witnesses include Mrs. Sutherland, Charles Russell, Dan Murrah, Frank Walton, and C A Chastang.
Two flue fires during the weekend prompted two runs by the fire department but caused little damage. A church blaze at the Baptist Church was spotted by the janitor at 5 30 Sunday afternoon drawing a crowd. Minor damage, about ten dollars, occurred at Mrs Walter Edwards apartment in front of the post office after a late Saturday night fire.
Mexican president elect Pascual Ortiz Rubio arrived in Kansas City today and checked into his hotel. He received a loud ovation from the crowd while police guarded against possible disruptions by Mexican communists.
J C Bishop 19 and Camp Brown 19 from Carta Valley were in a 1929 Ford when it went over a dip near Del Rio after racing with George Fisher of Del Rio. Bishop suffered fractured spinal vertebrae and faces paralysis, while Brown had multiple cuts and bruises. both were unconscious at the scene.
Laredo expected to reopen today after Mexico’s embargo to resume trade with Nuevo Laredo. Small package passages planned for Monday and mayoral certification of exports reported as possible. District Attorney John A. Vasis praised nationwide for handling the controversy.
