In Argyle Wisconsin a housekeeper reports a large rat making use of a basin of water on the basement floor for daily baths. The animal was caught in the act after several days of finding the basin dirty and sandy.
Judge C L South of Coleman West Texas arrives in Washington to take his seat as the new congressman and sets up his office in the House. He meets with Texas delegation member Rep R E Thomason to discuss shared projects for their carved districts.
Funeral services for Ben Greif age 47 were held in Floresville. His brother W. M. Greif and Mrs. Greif traveled to attend. Greif died of pneumonia after a New Year’s Day automobile explosion he said he triggered by striking a match. He was burned on his face, shoulders, arms and legs and walked two miles through a wet field for help. Survivors include his widow two small daughters his mother three sisters and five brothers.
Tyler January report says Hugh Gill, newly appointed justice of the peace, was rendered deaf by a firecracker thrown into his office. No other injuries were reported and police are investigating the incident.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon for Miss Maxine Westbrook age 21 who died from injuries after a Wednesday evening crash one half mile north of Quemado on the Del Rio highway. Her twin Miss Marine Westbrook survived with a broken foot shock and bruises. Chris Parker was hospitalized in Eagle Pass with uncertain chances of recovery.
Judge Lam ar Thaxton ordered a 150 man venire for the trial of H B Opp and E Trimble charged with killing Wylie Tomlinson Menard County commissioner. Trial set for Jan 8 with Dan Moody heading defense and about 100 witnesses summoned.
Frank Wendt the Hansford County agricultural agent since July 1931 has resigned to take a similar post in Hardeman County with headquarters at Quanah He will be succeeded by G Lester Boykin who for 10 years has been secretary and manager of the Clarendon Chamber of Commerce and a vocational agriculture teacher in Clarendon public schools Boykin will report January 1 to assume duties.
Samuel S. Gossard, former corset manufacturer and operator of the Gossard Radio and Wire Company, was found dead at his Belvidere home from a revolver bullet to the head. Authorities termed it death by own action.
Records from Chief Amos Humphrey show 74 fines totaling $1261.80 in City Court during 1934. Most payments involved street labor or gravel pit work, with 61 fines for disturbing the peace, eight for fighting, one for gambling, one for collision, and three for indecent exposure.
Kerrville postal receipts for the year ending December 31 1934 totaled 25953.07, a about ten percent above 1933. Quarterly totals show March 5807.47 June 6331.80 September 6871.50 December 6942.30, with 1930 the highest year at 27300.91.

Jan. 4 crash on the Alice San Diego highway claimed the lives of Epps Grover 32 of Alice and Pablo Perez of San Diego. George Perkins 33 of Alice was injured in the wreck that occurred today.
President Roosevelt arrives at a joint session to unveil a greatly expanded work relief program. He cites putting 3.5 million unemployed to work on slum clearance and permanent public works, notes budget feasibility, and urges social security measures including old age insurance and child and mother benefits.
Washington January 4 legislators were slow to comment on President Roosevelts message to the joint session noting the scope and unestimated cost of the undertakings. Deep divisions were anticipated once it becomes legislative. Chairman Jones of the House Agriculture committee called it sound and constructive. The President was applauded for seeking genuine friendships with Congress.
Val Verde County Chapter of the American Red Cross calls all members to a Wednesday 4 PM meeting at the Chamber of Commerce for the annual officer election. R H Ziehm, field representative from St Louis, will assist and attend in Del Rio.
