Jan 3 A Gauthier family of LaFayette La. drowns near Sylvester when car plunges from a bridge into water. Mrs A Gauthier, seven year old Lucille Ellen, and others rescued or missing. a negro maid saves three others and aids in escape before drowning occurs. The party had been living in Santa Fe NM and was en route home.
At Friday’s county commissioners court meeting the suburb Garden Park Estates, cut from city limits, received a decision to maintain about a mile of muddy streets under the same plan as public highways. Routine business followed, including approval of bonds for county officials who took office January 1.
Mrs Bery Hart and Capt William McLaren left North Beach today in a Bellanca seaplane bound for Paris. Their route includes a first stop in Bermuda followed by the Azores before crossing the ocean to France.
Mrs Rachel FE Hughes asks courts to declare her owner of a property held in her late husband's will as a life interest. Witnesses at a 1895 wedding testified he gave the property to her at marriage. The court upheld her contention in the cent decision.
Jefferson County grand jury declined to indict Robert J L Williams an 18 year old Texas University student in the death of his sweetheart Elizabeth Jett Williams. She was shot to death as she sat in a car in Port Arthur and Williams had been held on bond of 6000.
Jan 3 officers charged ex convict Bayi Quinn with revolting crimes linked to highway assaults near Tonkawa and Muskogee. A young married woman identified a photo as the attacker. Quinn’s car number matched the vehicle used. Mrs Quinn, confined as witness, feared publicity and did not disclose her name.
County and precinct officials qualified Friday after New Year closures. Isie S Almond was re appointed to the unexpired term of his father John W Almond Sr. Other new appointees include Dixie Stewart Dunn district clerk Maris Crore Adams school superintendent Lyle Almond tax collector Hassie Gallo Way county commissioner E Block county auditor. Existing officials continuing in place include Sheriff M J Whistler Tax Assessor Clarence Herreforsd District Attorney Julian LaCrosse County Clerk W A Hopkins County Judge Roger Thurmond and commissioners E M Zuberbueller T J Jarrett Roger Gillis Justice of the Peace Charles Miller and County Surveyor W T Hope.
John A. Spencer who served his third term as mayor of Athens Texas was killed when his car struck a tree four miles north of the city. He was a prominent East Texas cotton buyer and his neck was broken in the crash.
George Walker St. Clair of Tazewell Virginia, rector of Washington and Lee University trustees, donated $26,000 to establish a permanent chair of Religion at the university in Lexington Virginia.
Two young men robbed the Richard Molter night clerk at the Hotel Nimitz in Fredericksburg around 4 a m. Friday. They escaped in a small car after taking 31 50 from the cash register. Night watchman August Ahrens spotted two men matching the description about a half hour earlier.
The January term of Jude Joseph Jones 63rd District Court convenes here Monday with civil case hearings in the first week and grand jury and criminal complaints on the agenda. Joe Meyer, 56, jailor, is dead after a prisoner, Tommie Reis, 23, escaped last night. Reis was being held for a 35 year hold up sentence and was lured to the jailor's office by a visitor who shot Meyer in the abdomen and fled with Reis in a waiting car.
14 year old Ella Wilson of Greeley Colo was told by Del Rio police Saturday morning her mother had wired a railroad ticket for her return home The girl had been staying with Mr and Mrs J C Suenehart also of Greeley Cole who said they were entrusted to her care on the trip and expressed surprise at the turn of events The mother advised officers to place her daughter on a train bound for home after telegram was received Friday night
Multiple new well sites near the Love No 1 in Kerr County and Real County are prepared or planned. J M Auld No 1 may spud soon five miles northwest of the Lovewell. other targets include 80 acre tract in section 14 and Estelle Young SeikerMea tracts northeast of Love. Drilling to 4000 feet unless earlier production is found. McGinley Corp begins 12 inch casing on No 1 Haby seven miles south of Love. Production from Love No 1 pending final test and water extent, with production hoped around 300 barrels daily.
Four Detroit area automobile plants will return to limited production by Monday after about two weeks of inventories. Only former employees are being rehired. Ford Dearborn and 30 U.S. plants will reopen. Buick Flint resumes with 1,000 workers today and 3,000 more kept on payroll. Chevrolet, Packard, and Cadillac plants also resume as inventories end with plans to employ at least 10,000 by mid month.
The first strawberries of the season sold Friday in Carrizo Springs at 50 cents a pint. Express shipments will start early next week. The fruit is described as good with extra large size this year.
Seventeen families of Mexican repatriates from West Texas obtained permits to cross into Mexico Friday with livestock and farming implements to select lands in the San Carlos irrigation project near Villa Acuna. They are reportedly better equipped financially than recent groups, with cattle and cars among their assets, aided by Mexico’s duty reductions on livestock and implements.
Lambs gained 35 cents on the Kansas City market with top shorn lambs at 835 dollars and woolskins at 8.30. Fed steers declined 25 to 75 cents with top 1,106 pound steers at 12.35 and best yearlings at 12.10. hogs topped at 8.
The 1,100 foot bridge on U.S. Highway 385 and State Highway 9 replaces a low water span and rises 43 feet above the river. Construction completed January 1 after a March 15 contract, with over 500 attending a barbecue at the opening. Local officials praise the project’s benefit to the hill country.

Alfonso Johnson, director of the trade extension division of the Dallas Chamber of Commerce, will visit Del Rio for two days starting January 30. He will lecture titled The Human Equation in Business and speak before luncheon clubs, school groups, and church audiences. A Chamber luncheon is planned for Friday January 30. Johnson formerly worked as business editor of the Dallas News for five years and as business manager of the Tokio Advertiser in Tokyo, Japan.
Crystal City reports a Wednesday night dance altercation left a man stabbed with a knife and hospitalized after a fight at the local hall. Police are assessing injuries and motive as investigators question witnesses.
Paris, Jan 3. Marshal Joseph Joffre, the French war hero who never lost a battle, died at 8:22 a m after a 46 hour coma. Madame Joffre and daughter were at his bedside with officers, doctors and monks. United States Ambassador Walther Edge joined initial calls. Premier Theodore Steeg offered condolences. Joffre directed allied armies in World War I and led the Marne offensive.
The group aimed to complete a $4475 quota with pledges totaling about $3500 after the opening drive. A canvass of ranchers and businesses is planned Monday, with T J Jarrett W S Stevenson George E Love and Tom Miller on the committee. Pledges are one cent per sheep for five years, minimum 1000 sheep, with time payments allowed. The county quota funds a state ad campaign to promote lamb meat for the table.
Trinidad Constancia, Del Rio youth, is jailed on a federal liquor transport charge after officers intercepted him on Hope Lane. A 1928 Portcoud auto carried 24 quarts of mescal. bond set at $500. arraigned before U S Commissioner C J Smith, with grand jury action expected in March.
