Val Verde County campaign for Eat More Lamb fund reports only about 1500 of 4750 needed pledges. committee aims to raise remaining funds Monday. Ranchers and business men pledged amounts tied to sheep and goat fees, with totals varying and many pledges under 1000.
Alfred Williams died suddenly at his Eagle Pass home Thursday morning. The Lyman Drue Company employee and former Central Pharmacy worker is survived by his wife and daughter Betty, who attends grammar school. Funeral services were held Friday. He had moved from Del Rio about 15 years ago and worked with J. White in business.
A group of Lockhart hunters near Laredo bagged a 16 point buck on the Trevener ranch. Five shooters fired as the deer fell, and to settle who claimed the head they cast lots. Teck Branyon won the head and plans to mount it.
A lone unmasked man robbed the Palace Theatre box office in Osco on Thursday night at gunpoint. Ticket clerk Miss Jackie Hatton was ordered to surrender the day and night receipts. Manager T. N. Greer estimated the loss at $250. the bandit fled the scene.
Mr and Mrs Frank Latta greet Del Rio's first baby of 1931 a daughter born at 12 10 Thursday morning at the Latta family home. The newborn weighed eight pounds and is named Vivian Loraine born to Oscar Latta and wife at 607 East Third Street.
Houston report cites Moore Lynn state auditor noting cash irregularities in the Texas prison system. Checks totaling 1554.67 from 1928 and 1929 were not properly remitted or accounted for. An apparent shortage of 227.68 occurred in the prisoners' commissary cash counter fund on August 14, 19XX.
About 1500 people attended a carnival of pleasure in Villa Acuna to honor the inauguration of Valttiano Vak as president. The event featured street dancing, a plaza athletic program, and military maneuvers after a late night ceremony at the courthouse.
Walter Kyle 44 veteran builder of Ozona died suddenly from a ruptured blood vessel at the Wilse Owens ranch about 40 miles west. Funeral services were held at First Methodist Church with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his widow two sons Walter Kyle Jr and Arthur Kyle and a daughter Tessie Kyle.
The December report shows the average temperature 27 degrees below normal, with a high of 58.9 and a low of 40.1 degrees. A maximum 171 degrees occurred on December 14 and a monthly low of 27 degrees on December 23. The body of Cant Johnson, a ginner and hermit, was found hanging from a rope attached to a rafter in his Katy Vile area cottage in San Marcos. Neighbors saw him at noon feeding chickens. August Schon found the scene. Johnson had been in poor health and unable to work for months, a condition said to have affected his mind. He previously worked at Oscar Smith Gin before retirement.

St Louis January 2 A kidnapping of Adolphus Orthwein heir to millions ended with the boy being returned to his parents after about 26 hours. The Star reports the kidnapper, Charles Y Abernation, an unemployed Black father of seven, remains at large while negotiations led to the boy’s release in exchange for the kidnapper’s safety.
A Mexican mother and two day old baby were cared for by Averon Vasquez at his Del Rio home after a car wreck on the San Angelo highway. Mr Myers of San Angelo found the repatriates stranded, helped them to Del Rio, and the baby was born about two miles from Del Rio. Both mother and baby are reported doing nicely.
Fire at the Baltimore Post building last night killed one linotype operator Joseph R Douglass and injured four others. The blaze forced operations to the Baltimore Sun plant but the newspaper published its regular editions on schedule. Origin of the fire remains unknown.
Ten people died in state during New Year celebrations. A dozen others were injured in holiday incidents across the state. Two fatal automobile crashes occurred and one turkey dinner linked death was reported. A French oyster find yielded 33 pearls, two black, sent to Nantes for assay.
Rev. Charl Nixon, pastor of Fu Methodist Church, spoke at the Del Club in the Hotel Roswell dining room. He urged hard work and economy, condemned stock gambling, and urged reforms to help the unemployed and poor as 1931 approached. A $100,900 blaze in Celeste Texas ravaged more than half the downtown business area. J C Rogers nine was saved from a well after falling during awning collapse as Pat Kelly twelve lowered himself to rescue him. Firemen Jake Bickham Charles Doyle and GD Hide were injured fighting the flames. The fire began in the rear of a grocery with undetermined origin.
A letter from the State Department of Education informs Mr. Brannan that Sanderson has been admitted to membership in the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools of the Southern States. Accreditation lasts one year from the list adoption date and requires maintaining high standards through inspections, principal reports, and student records.

A Grand Trunk passenger train struck an automobile in Harvey a Chicago suburb killing nine people. It raised Cook County New Year fatalities to 17 with a three month old baby hurtful thrown clear and uninjured. Victims named include Frank Nowak Mathew Olason Mrs Olason Muriel Olason Vilborg Olason Calvin Olason Mrs Nowak Adam Nowak and Lorraine Nowak.
Ozona Texas January 2 range conditions in Crockett County are good for this time of year. Sheep and cattle are doing exceptionally well though several ranchers are moving sheep to other pastures where bitterweed infests the range. A few sheep have died from poisoning, but ranchers are moving flocks before they begin feeding on the weed.
The Del Rio area shows partly cloudy skies with warmer temperatures tonight and Saturday. Overnight low around 34 degrees with yesterday’s high at 83. Forecast includes continued mild warmth into Saturday.
