Rain New Year s Eve brought 0.2 inch of moisture in Del Rio with showers from 11 30 p m to 3 a m recorded by H L Molyneux US weather observer. Light showers reported in Eagle Pass Brackettville and Spofford while the year s rainfall deficiency exceeded 6 5 inches and December added about 0 65 inch.
Bitter cold swept the upper Mississippi Valley as snow piled two to four inches in places. Earlier ice and sleet caused numerous accidents and five deaths in Pennsylvania. Baltimore saw heavy snow while New England was blanketed with three inches to a foot, slowing traffic. Duluth Minnesota reported 20 degrees below zero.
An alarm from a street box pulled by a prankster shortly after midnight Monday sent the fire department to 900 block South Main Street.
James C. Lipscom, a 92 year old pioneer cattleman, Civil War veteran and former sheriff born in Washington County, died after a night incident in Galveston.
Francis Cardinal Bourne, aged 73 and archbishop of Westminster, died today in London. The death marks a major loss for the Church as tributes pour in from Catholic and civic leaders.
Sophie Johnson died in Dallas after a second operation to remove a drain tube following a 125 pound tumor removal a month earlier. The case drew nationwide medical attention as officials reported the death occurred today amid ongoing surgical efforts.
In Mineral Wells on January 14, Gra ham Street, 29, Southern Methodist University, and Malcolm Graham, 19, University of Texas, were killed when their car struck a bridge at Perrin Boyd Street. Street’s brother, Boyd Street, was severely injured. he said the driver appeared to nod off.
George W. Cottingham, managing editor of the Houston Chronicle, is named editor succeeding the late W. O. Higgins. The appointment was made today by Jesse Jones, president publisher, in Houston.
County and district officers elected in November began their terms Tuesday. New appointees include District Attorney Julian LaCrosse, County Judge Clarence Herreford, County Attorney W. P. Wallace Jr., District Clerk Mrs. Dixie S. Dunn, County Clerk W. A. Hopkins, Sheriff A. E. Steinmetz, Tax Assessor-Collector Lyle S. Almond, County Treasurer J. Autrey Walker, County Surveyor W. T. Hope, Superintendent of Public Instruction W. F. Jourdan, Public Weigher William Petty, and County Commissioners F. H. Whitehead Tom Brite H. J. Y. Mills, plus Justice of the Peace J. P. Aderhold and Constable T. A. Turk. First-time officeholders include Judge Herreford Supt Jourdan and Commissioners Whitehead Brite and Aderhold. Court house offices closed but terms began the day.
Six trusties from the State Penitentiary at Huntsville began a truck delivery of 1935 automobile license plates to 26 Panhandle counties. Thirteen thousand plates were unloaded at Potter County tax office, the first batch from a shipment produced at the penitentiary. State officials expect truck delivery to cut distribution costs.
George N. Johnson, Endicott Johnson founder, said he is ashamed and mortified after being named by the Senate munitions committee as one of the Americans with million dollar incomes before 1920. He told associates and workers in a Dayton Beach message that with world suffering no man has a right to pile up money and lamented that he has comparatively little left.
During 1934 there were 3 175 car licenses issued in the county records of Lyle S Almond tax collector. Of this number 521 were trucks 168 were farm trucks and 2486 were passenger cars. The figures include both new and old cars. Records show that 1138 used cars were transferred, 150 more than in 1933.
A fire at the Cherokee County home in Gaffney South Carolina on January 1 killed five elderly residents and injured fifteen others. Convicts from a nearby prison camp rescued the screaming inmates as physicians reported no serious injuries among the rescued.
Tuskegee Institute records show fifteen lynchings nationwide in 1934, down from twenty eight in 1933. Eight victims were legally in custody or officials’ hands. cases occurred in Alabama Florida Georgia Kentucky Louisiana Mississippi Tennessee and Texas.
Topeka dispatch notes demographic shifts with women outpacing men in population growth. Small buildings $13 005, business and other structures $34 671, additions and repairs $41 726. Largest permit $23 951 by the State Highway Department for division offices and warehouse.
Sheriff A. E. Steinmetz found a coupe abandoned in Del Rio and notified Shreveport police. The vehicle bears a Shreveport license plate and awaits word from the chief of police on disposition.
East Texas sees colder air with frost along the coast. Interior areas expect freezing temperatures tonight. Wednesday brings fair skies and rising temperatures. Extreme Southeast remains fair but colder. Panhandle warms tonight with fair conditions. Wednesday forecasts continued fair weather and higher temperatures.
