New York police raided about 30 locations in Harlem roadway and Greenwich Village amid New Year celebration reports. Experts note widespread liquor availability as revelry continued with many bars operating past typical hours.
The grand jury, recessed Wednesday, will re-convene at 9 am Thursday morning. Foreman J. B. Moore said the Fall term grand jury will likely finish its work Thursday and the January term opens Monday. They will address unfinished business and any cases arising since Tuesday, with no major New Year’s law violations reported.
Arguments were underway in the Scott murder trial in Berger Texas related to the April 18 death of Mrs Bennie Turner. The defendant Far C Scott testified he believed the woman would shoot him when she reached for a side pocket while driving.
Stamford Texas reports 1929 produced record West Texas growth with wheat at over 56 million bushels and cotton surpassing 1 million bales. The West Texas Chamber of Commerce projects more than 150 million dollars in improvements in the coming year while railroad projects may add about 50 million.
A. Y. Baker, Hidalgo County sheriff for 18 years, said he would not seek re election though not retiring from politics. He is expected to announce for governor soon. Baker, known as the Millionaire sheriff of Hidalgo County, formerly lived in Del Rio.
New Year Eve and New Year Day brought no serious fires or accidents in Del Rio as police, sheriffs, and fire officials checked for injuries. Fireworks were widely used by youth but reports remained non critical as midnight passed. Dances at local clubs and scout watch parties along the Devils River filled the celebrations with limited incidents.
The Texas Commercial Executives Association newsletter edited by Paul Vickers notes widespread interest from chambers of commerce in livestock and agriculture. Del Rio plans a 136 acre site for a municipal airport as part of a statewide trend toward aviation infrastructure and development in Val Verde County and other Texan cities.

A Lynchburg man F. L. Woodson, 45, lost his left arm after being run over while attempting to board a Southern Pacific freight train at Pumpville. He was amputated above the elbow at the local hospital later that evening.
A Roanoke resident aged 45 said he would head to San Antonio to seek a job after a mobilization. He noted it was his first time riding a freight train. His note to the command stated his wife urged him to stay home and not chase bank robbers. His resignation was accepted.
Cincinnati figure Charles H Taft 64 died last night from pneumonia complications. He was editor of the Cincinnati Times Star philanthropist and art collector with diverse business interests. He backed baseball ventures in Chicago and Philadelphia and led the Coleman Fulton Pasture Company known as the Taft Ranch along the Gulf Coast Texas where he helped found the town of Taft.
January 1 to January 8 is National Children's Garment Week proclaimed by Frank A. Waller. Members of the National Association of Dyers and Cleaners, including Walton Bros. in Del Rio, offer free cleaning for children's garments to start the year with clean, stain free clothing for school.
Poag, manager of the R and R and owner of the Juarez Theatre, today announced the purchase of the Casino Theatre in San Felipe. It is unclear whether the Casino and Juarez will operate separately or be combined, with a possible merger of the two houses.
A well known young couple married in Chicago received seven cake baskets of the same design as wedding gifts.
E. Rowlett named manager of the Alamo Lumber Company in Del Rio. He previously served two and a half years as bookkeeper and had managed the Laredo yard after years in the timber business. well known in this section and the Laredo territory.

Frank A. Miller, president of the South Carolina bar association, state senator, and lieutenant governor candidate, was shot to death with his own pistol in Hartsville. The death was considered accidental, though family members denied suicide reports.

An explosion at the Pillsbury flour elevator in Enid Oklahoma killed one man, Robert Lee Mize a sweeper, and seriously hurt three other workers. The blast ripped through the basement scattering debris and blew out all windows. Investigators suspect a dust explosion.
E. K. Fawcett ships a second carload this season from his Del Rio area pens to water three miles from town. About 2,000 sheep are involved with roughly 250 head per car in good condition. Other nearby ranchers also feed sizable flocks.
Hearne dispatch reports Ben Burts, 34, a car inspector at the Southern Pacific yards, died from injuries after being struck by switching cars. His right leg was severed and his right arm mangled in the accident.
