Janitor at the new high school sustained minor injuries when a boiler room gas explosion shattered windows and loosened door casings. The fire was detected by a night watchman and a later operator’s attempt to light the oil caused the blast. The building damage was insured.
Del Rio students resume classes after a week long holiday break. District 26 All-Stars coach A J L Anthony trained in Uvalde during the recess while Superintendent Rey M Amirews and family were in Fort Worth and Teague. Many teachers traveled, with others visiting homes across Texas.
West End elementary school nearly finished with furniture installation to begin Tuesday. Superintendent Roy M. Andrews says the building should be ready for pupils Monday with only minor details remaining before formal acceptance by the school board.
A fire in Celeste Texas caused about 20000 worth of damage to a hardware and furniture warehouse early today. Local fire units from Greenville and Leonard battled the blaze and prevented further spread.
Charles J. Kirk, 55, former Houston public service commissioner, died today after a stroke of apoplexy.
In Alpine area reports credit a Marfa Chamber of Commerce program that fed transients with 25 cent cafe tickets then shifted hoboes to street labor in exchange for meals and lodging. Sheriff Bunton backed the plan, reducing arrivals by about two thirds and keeping hoboes from Marfa.
West Texas rail growth looms with talks of Santa Fe extending from Sonora to Del Rio a gateway for Mexican goods. Officials at an Interstate Commerce hearing in Lubbock indicated the plan though no applications have been filed. EASTLAND Dec 29 UP Selection of a jury to decide Clyde Thompson 2 on sanity began at a special center. Thompson twice faced death for the murder of Lucian Shook 27 and his brother Leon Shook 21 during a hunting trip. First trial yielded death. reversed, then a second death penalty was affirmed by the Court of Criminal Appeals.
A homecoming luncheon is planned for Hondo students now attending elsewhere. The event on December 26 will feature Mrs. Bitz beth Wile of Baya, Miss Octavia Devise a San Antonio music and art teacher, and Miss Ester Saathoff a Southwestern University voice student with Miss Leora Hereger at the piano.
Juse and Pelix Felan, Del Rio brothers, were jailed on a $500 bond for transporting liquor after arraignment before U. S. Commissioner C. D. Smith. Arrested Saturday by mounted customs patrol, they were found with 21 cases of liquor while driving a Chevrolet. They remain in county jail awaiting March federal grand jury action. bond denied.
Local officers searched Monday for a Buick sedan stolen from a San Angelo motorist Sunday night. It is believed the car was taken by Mexicans attempting to reach the border. The car belonged to Mr. Kinfland of Sonora.

Customs Inspector George J. Harris of Washington D C assistant commissioner general of the customs department arrived in Del Rio Sunday to oversee local affairs. He is on an inspection tour from El Paso along the border toward Jacksonville Florida meeting Border Patrol officials including Assistant Superintendent Collyer.
Unidentified gunmen fired from a fa ialo into the Kate Benson home on North Getty Street and at the Uvalde County Jail in two separate incidents. No arrests have been made. clues are being pursued as deputies investigate the drive-by shootings and search for motive.
New York police report a bandit held up the Paramount theatre in Times Square early today and escaped with eleven thousand dollars. The incident occurred at the heart of the theatre district as a lone robber struck the box office. No arrests have been announced.
Only 40 new 1931 license plates have been sold to automobile owners of Val Verde County this January. Typically about 3,500 are sold before month’s end. Owners should obtain plates early from County Tax Collector Lyle Almond, bringing last year’s license certificate and new headlight certificates.
A six place Fairchild monoplane ground-looped during takeoff at the local airport Saturday afternoon. Part of the landing gear was stripped but no injuries occurred among the six passengers. The aircraft, piloted by B F Root, had previously landed Friday morning while the pilot prepared a city tour.

At the new senior high, finishing touches proceed. ceilings, sound proofing, and auditorium plastering advance as stage setup nears. Grounds prep includes filling tow places with several hundred truckloads of soil for planting shrubbery.
C. D. Williamson, a local fireman, owned the 1929 Chrysler sedan that burned early Monday morning while traveling with W. R. Latham and Marvin Williams. They noticed flames from beneath the car and escaped as the body became enveloped in fire, likely starting from the exhaust. An Evening News employee aiding Williamson’s group provided coverage and transport.
Twelve convicts at Indiana prison attempted an escape led by Joseph Burns serving life for murder. Burns opened a cellhouse door with a spoon fashioned key but guards rushed the outer wall and halted the rebellion without further incident.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon for Raymond Charles Green a two year old who died Sunday morning from double pneumonia at his East Tenth Street home. Pastor Raymond Charles Green officiated with Rev. James F. Black. burial followed at Westlawn Cemetery. The child had been ill two days, a physician having been summoned a day before. Mr. A F Green is a cement contractor in the city.
Paris reports the last rites given to Marshal Ferdinand Foch commander of French forces in World War I as he remains gravely ill after leg amputation. Officials from the papacy attended to him in a solemn ceremony signaling the end of a long military career.
