Final returns boost Ferguson lead in statewide contest. Del Rio schools will open September 12 as planned, with the board stating it is necessary to operate on a credit basis for several months. The duration depends on public response to tax appeals and prompt payment of delinquent taxes.
The board reports an $11 701 19 overdraft in the general maintenance fund with $6 587 due from the state apportionment and $3 250 34 in sinking funds. It is hoped delinquent tax collection will cover most indebtedness, with taxes for 1932 due in October. Duwain E. Hughes is anticipated to become president of the San Angelo branch of the Agricultural Credit Corporation after talks with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. The San Angelo office will be in the Western Reserve Life Insurance Building and focus on livestock loans before broader farmer lending.
The Texas Senate voted 18 to 10 to urge Governor Ross Sterling to bring the question of salary reductions for state employees to a special session. Senators DeBerry and Poage called for retrenchment in expenditures, including reduced appropriations and salaries. The concurrent measure moves to the House for consideration. Rep. Burns of Brady proposed an investigative resolution.
Both houses debated a resolution on a highway department policy inquiry and postponed its consideration as a special order. The investigation would cover policy matters within the department during the session.
Sonora mourns 42 year old Robert N. Holland found dead after a two day search in Irion County. Coroner George W. DeLong rules death a knife wound. Holland, longtime rancher, left Sanderson border area for Eldorado then Lonnie Noelke ranch with wife and daughter Roberta. He is survived by his widow, daughter, mother, three brothers, and six sisters.
Christoval Texas August 31 Christoval businessmen sign a petition asking the Texas railroad commission not to allow the Santa Fe railroad to discontinue the merchant agent office The Santa Fe began an investigation of slight patronage here and filed the discontinuance application against Christoval affairs.
Kansas City article notes Republican nominee J. M. Joslin for Wyandotte County treasurer lists "two of shoes" among election expenses. The statement reflects what Joslin considers components of election spending.

Dispatches report about 11,000 people drowned since Sunday in Tungkun, Kwangtung province, after floods on the Tung River. The Tungkun city wall is said to have prevented total submersion of the city.
In observance of Labor Day Del Rio merchants will close their stores Monday September 5 according to announcements by the Retail Merchants Association and the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce. The post office will also be closed with no mail deliveries that day. The Evening News will publish as usual.
The railroad commission increased the East Texas field well allowable to 50 barrels. The order effective for 15 days imposes a top daily output limit of 375000 barrels, replacing the prior 43 barrel allowance set to expire tonight.
A family of five the Douglases perished when their car was struck by a Louisville and Nashville train three miles west of Lagrange Kentucky. The father mother and son named Douglas and two daughters killed instantly, one girl dying before aid arrived.
Torrential rains deluged West Texas towns from Del Rio to Brackettville on Tuesday night into Wednesday. Creeks rose, roads closed, and miles of fences toppled while buses failed to move and bridges and underpasses flooded. Trains continued running despite widespread high water. Del Rio logged 3.34 inches from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday as rivers swelled.
Charles Dissler, 47, longtime Devil's River ranchman and resident of this Texas region for 44 years, died at his ranch home Wednesday morning at 2 o'clock after a heart attack. He moved to the area with his parents in 1888 from Kendall County and married eight years ago to Miss [surname].
The remains of a rancher were brought home to a nearby ranch within miles of his boyhood home. Funeral plans remained incomplete at 2 pm as the party was water bound by distant draws. A wagon crossing attempt was planned for noon. Surviving: wife Louise Dissler, sons Melvin 5 J R 3 and Charles III 7 months, mother Elizabeth Dissler 78 of Del Rio, brothers John and Ben Dissler, ranchmen near Dolan Springs, Devil's River.
Mexico City reports the federal government will soon organize a mortgage and public works bank with 26 million pesos in foundation and capital. The bank aims to regulate mortgage loans and interest, curb abuses from private negotiations, and finance needed public works, according to the treasury department.
In McCulloch County near the Henry Otte farm workers blasted a rock on the Brady road and produced a clear artesian water stream. They could not stop the flow and redirected the tarlike water into a drainage point by cementing and piping a two inch stream to the road.
Cherokeo Iowa August 31 twelve farmers were wounded by shotgun fire from an unidentified car at a roadblock on Highway 31. Tear gas bombs were thrown before the shooting. A woman also suffered back injuries when struck by a car yesterday. Sheriff McDonald said no farmers pickets remain on Douglas County highways.
The report notes Del Rio area average rainfall at 13.17 inches with a six inch downpour in Carta Valley causing washed out fences and flooded draws. Uvalde and eastward received about 1.50 inches, extending to San Angelo Van Horn and into Mexico. Vinegarone saw rain Tuesday night into Wednesday with Sanderson and Sonora also reporting showers. Eagle Pass notes good showers over the past week.
Amy Johnson announced Capt. A. J. Mollison will return to England by steamer, abandoning a planned second Atlantic flight. Earlier reports said Mollison suffered nervous exhaustion while in Sydney Nova Scotia.
City officers Charley Lockhart and Cole Blackwell report several arrests for drunkenness and traffic violations including fast driving. Fines were issued and one speeding offender was barred from driving a car for three months.

In Blue Ridge Texas on Aug 31 two men robbed Security State Bank taking more than 2000 dollars. Three accomplices waited outside as cars fired on passersby injuring Mrs J O Nelson lightly. They kidnapped assistant cashier Eubanks and bookkeeper Miss Elfred Richardson and released them miles from town.
Ore page reports economic pressure drives evasion of auto license fees. Wheat ranchman R. E. Bryant hitched a team of nurses to his truck and hauled a grain load to town to avoid fees.
A revised Dallas tabulation in the Democratic runoff shows Miriam Ferguson leading Governor Ross Sterling by 2 042 votes. Ferguson rises to 475 756 to Sterling 473 714 after adjustments including Eastland County which trimmed Sterling by 111 votes. Counties Leon Kimble Live Oak Reagan Trinity and Zavala were still incomplete at 11 pm with 9 16 am totals showing Ferguson ahead.
San Angelo August 31 The State TB Sanatorium prepares to open a new patients dormitory on September 1 making the institution the third largest of its kind in the nation. Dormitory eight, the hospital's latest annex, is a 64 bed infirmary for women built at a cost of 90000 dollars.
Due to illness of the Dumas pastor the Trans-Canadian Baptist Association meets in Dalhart on September 1 and 2. Speakers include Dr. W. S. Allen of Baylor University Dr. J. C. Hardy of Baylor College for Women and Dr. L. R. Scarborough of Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary Fort Worth.
Rail rate cuts effective September 12 cut concentration charges for wool and mohair from San Angelo area to Gulf points, saving ranchers about 100000 dollars yearly. New tariffs by territory range from 70 to 85 cents per hundred pounds, with refunds for inbound charges and partial retains from certain routes, while out of line service charges remain.
