Val Verde Sets County Tax Rate at 28 Cents

Val Verde County Commissioners set the 1939 tax rate at 28 cents per $100 valuation, unchanged from 1938. County Judge Grover C. Poole announced the rate, with 25 cents for general fund and 3 cents for the jury fund. No county tax discounts will be offered to avoid raising the rate. state discounts may apply. The combined county and state rate equals 110 cents per $100, the highest permissible under law.

Carl Flaxman To Speak At Rotary Meet

Carl Flaxman of Austin, child welfare consultant, will address the Rotary Club at its Wednesday noon meeting in the Roswood Hotel. J Autrey Walker, club president, announced. Flaxman serves with the Child Welfare Board of Texas, based in Austin.

Junior Life Savers Urged to Report to Cox

Juniors aged 12 to 16 are urged to report to Walter Cox, custodian of Moore Park swimming pool, by Friday. Fifteen hours of instruction and hours of examination will be provided, enabling completion of Red Cross life saving work for competition at Fort Clark.

Texas to Lift Oil Shutdown Early Friday

Texas Railroad Commission chairman Lon A. Smith announced a two day extension of the oil field shutdown, lifting the cut at 7 a.m. Friday September 1 after a meeting of the Interstate Oil Compact Commission. Crude stocks have fallen since August 15 and witnesses urged maintaining stock levels while some companies sought deeper stock draws.

Group to Seek Highway Improvements From Del Rio to Sonora

A Del Rio led delegation plans to press the State Highway Commission in Austin for development of a twelve mile stretch on Highway 85 to Las Moras Creek and for Dry Devil's River work on Highway 277 from Del Rio to Sonora. An allotment of 310000 has been set for Red Bluff on 277, aiming to remove high water hazards between Del Rio and Sonora.

Funeral set for W. E. Pound in Del Rio

W. E. Pound 72 dies of heart attack Monday in the Del Rio National Bank Building elevator. Funeral held Wednesday at St. James Episcopal with Rev. Fred C. Rufle. Interment at Westlawn Cemetery. Survivors include Mrs. Pound and nephew Aller V. Pearson. Pound was a Mason and Rotary member.

Judge Grover C. Poole announced that starting Sept 2 all courthouse offices will stay open Saturday afternoons. Previously during June July and August offices closed at noon on Saturdays.

Traffic Light Installed at Gibbs Street and Avenue F

A new stop and go traffic light began regulating the Gibbs Street and Avenue F intersection. City officials Mayor W S Gibbons and Police Chief Cole Y Blackwell examined the setup after Monday installation, noting improved flow. The twenty five second cycle light was supplied by the McClure Electric Company of Dallas and marks a shift from signals only at downtown to this arterial crossing.

Prague nurses ordered to report to district commanders

New Test Well Is Started on Jones Patterson Lease

A new test oil well named Rode No. One was spudded in on the Jones Patterson lease this week. Drilled by Boid Hopkins and FE D Eaton, it lies 1400 feet east and 150 feet north of the SW corner of Section Ten, Block B8, three miles north of Vinegarone. A Model C Fort Worth spudder is used, with planned depth 600 feet, extendable to 1800 if needed.

Junior Chamber Backs State Safety Push In Texas

Del Rio Junior Chamber of Commerce directors voted to support the Texas Safety Association plan to improve highway safety statewide. Joe Bailes outlined a uniform traffic safety program coordinating official and unofficial efforts and a back to school safety campaign. The group voted to outfit junior traffic policemen at North Heights and West End Elementary with Sam Browne belts.
