Eagle Pass August 28 A surge in onion growing is expected as plans call for at least 1000 acres to be planted by September 15. Chiefs growers Murl OKeefe and Travis Ferguson estimate 50 to 100 acres by OKeefe and over 200 by Ferguson with spinach acreage similar to last year. In 1927 Maverick County set a county record of 5100 acres of spinach and Eagle Pass remains a top spinach shipping center near Crystal City.
