Val Verde County chose a new county superintendent of education in a runoff as W. F. Jourdan defeated incumbent Marie Grande Adams. With only Double Tanks and Juno precincts out, Jourdan led 1 053 to 761 and carried nine of the 11 precincts reporting by 9 p.m.
In Collegeville Pennsylvania state police and guards crushed a three hour riot at Eastern State Penitentiary in Graterford after about 200 convicts set fires and attacked cell blocks. Forty state policemen subdued the inmates without firings. no serious injuries or escapes were reported.
Geologists report carbonized logs unearthed along the Union Creek Diamond Lake Highway in Crater Lake National Park Oregon. One log stood upright under 60 feet of volcanic deposits. Dr. Warren D. Smith of the University of Oregon estimates the log was buried by ancient Mt Mazama explosion about 20 000 years ago.
August Martin, venerable chief of the Lummi tribe in Bellingham Washington, acts under district Indian superintendent O C Upchurch to preside over trials of Indians accused of law violations and civil suits between tribesmen. In his first case he sentenced four intoxicated offenders to 10 days in jail and 10 days' work on the reservation.
The Del Rio Evening News and Princess Theatre partner with 10 merchants to sponsor a city wide treasure hunt tied to the film Treasure Island. Six ten dollar bills await the finder buried under one foot. clues appear on cards in stores Thursday with 54 words needed for the total, five key words shown Friday morning in the theatre lobby.
In Edwards County the race for county and district clerk shows Mrs Annie L Hough leading O G C Pope with 456 votes for Hough and 303 for Pope and 63 ballots yet to be counted. The tally underscores a close contest as tabulation continues.
Shepherd scene reports a fatal shooting of John Hanna of Corrigan. Pi.W. E Franklin, justice of the peace, withheld verdict pending the arrest of a man seen with Hanna the day before the body was found on a highway south of Shepherd. The pistol bullet entered behind the right ear and only $7 was found with the deceased.
In Cleveland Cuya hoga County employees asked for a half day to vote in the Ohio primary. Chief Justice Homer G. Powell of the common pleas court said half days are allowed only on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, not for primary elections.
The Farm Administration announced corn hog benefit payments totaling about $4,550,000 have been disbursed at a rate of $2,000,000 daily. The payments include Texas for $84,483 among others, benefiting cooperative farmers nationwide.
In Findlay Ohio Judge Sumner Walters of Van Wert pledged to withhold foreclosure on farms where refinancing may be possible following a march by about 300 farmers representatives to the common pleas court last week.
Eight thousand pounds of canned meat arrived Saturday in Del Rio for distribution to county residents in need. Relief administrator E. S. Block said the meat is in two pound cans and was sent from the government cannery in San Antonio, canned from government purchased cattle.
In Amarillo on August 25, old punchers from the Panhandle cow country gathered at the T Anchor Ranch near Canyon for the thirteenth annual roundup. More than 50 riders from the open range days joined about 300 persons for barbecue and memories of past plains days.
Berlin reports author Dorothy Thompson alias Mrs Dorothy Thompson Sinclair Lewis was ordered by secret police to depart Germany within 24 hours due to alleged hostile attitude toward the nation.
Rev. Herbert G. Markley travels from Del Rio to Breckenridge to officiate at the funeral of W. R. White, oil field accident victim near Tyler. White's service will be held Sunday afternoon at the First Christian Church. Markley will not preach at Del Rio on Sunday as previously announced. W. H. Cook accompanied Markley from Del Rio to Breckenridge.
About 2,000 votes were cast in Val Verde in a run off with two precincts unreported. Totals show candidates leading in several races including Hunter over Allred for Governor and Lattimore over Sharp for Supreme Court associate justice, along with other races such as Congress, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Railroad Commissioner and County Superintendent.
Early returns from 232 counties show Allred leading in several districts, with totals such as Allred 427,494 vs Hunter 388,319 and McCraw 421,440 to Woodward 351,085. Other counties report complete or incomplete tallies for multiple candidates across Texas regions including Travis, Dallas, Bexar, Harris, and Galveston.
President Roosevelt cleared his desk and will depart tonight for Hyde Park New York to establish a Summer White House likely staying until late September. A new NRA setup is planned to take effect within a couple of weeks while he stays at Hyde Park.
George L. Carmark, 75, was killed when struck by an automobile he signaled to warn a possible crash. The incident occurred on the highway at night as he attempted to flag down the vehicle.
Charles L. South of Coleman County led the race for representative of the 21st congressional district, with a conceded margin estimated between 3,500 and 4,000 votes over opponent Carl Runge of Mason County.

Ottawa August 25 Canada’s war veterans may hold their next reunion at Vimy Ridge in France. The Dominion Command of the Canadian Legion says the pilgrimage would occur in connection with the unveiling of Canada’s national war memorial in 1936.
In Ashtabula Ohio an overnight rain drowned 264 sparrows under a single poplar tree on a resident’s lawn. Herrman Kuivinen found 204 sparrows and reported the tragedy as part of the local weather loss.
With four counties still unreported at midnight Saturday the race for the 21st Congressional District leaned toward Charles S. South by about 6 129 votes over Carl Runge. South led 27 864 to 21 735 with counties Bandera Kerr Gillespie and Real not yet in. Additional returns from 11 Val Verde precincts showed South ahead 953 to 841 in Mason County while Runge led at several towns and precincts including the Graf Hotel Vinegarone Central School Pendale San Felipe and Key locations.
The right leg of a woman, sawed off above the knee, was found by Black cotton pickers in Elm Creek's dry bed near a Cameron bridge. The leg, wrapped in a Fort Worth newspaper dated April 24, 1934, and sealed in a cardboard box, triggered a sheriff's investigation.
Richard Hamister of Lakewood and Russell Gantz of Creston rode 183 miles by bicycle from Devil's Lake Michigan to Cleveland Ohio. They started at 6:30 a.m. and finished at 9:30 p.m. after a detour added 15 miles when they passed a sign they failed to notice.
