Jack A. Cain aged 55 died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his Cline country ranch home Saturday night. Funeral Monday at 4 pm in Doran Chapel with Rev. L B Gilbert officiating. Interment Westlawn Cemetery. Survived by widow five children three sisters and three brothers and five grandchildren. Masons conducted graveside services. Numerous relatives and residents from Spofford Pandale Pandale and surrounding areas attended.
A seven week drought ended in Ellis County when a good rain fell across a large part of the county on Sunday. The weather relief comes after a prolonged dry spell affecting crops and farming conditions. Local residents welcomed the rain as crops and pastures begin to recover.
Del Rio hosts a September 1 caravan to Saltillo via Villa Acuña and Allende to press an international highway plan. Delegates will meet Coahuila officials between September 4 and 5 in Monterrey and Saltillo. Cars from San Antonio and Villa Acuña join. local registrations close August 28 with no car fees.
Governor Allred appoints D. Leon Harp of Limestone County as temporary secretary of state to fill the vacancy caused by R. B. Stanford resigning to become district judge of Waco. Harp already serves as securities commissioner. permanent successor under consideration.
Senator Carter Glass of Virginia said after a conference with the President that he would vote for Roosevelt in November but was undecided on speaking in the campaign. He added doctors advised him not to speak publicly.
John Mason faced no charges after a fatal accident on Highway 85 two miles north of Eagle Pass that killed 21 year old Monica Besa. Mason's truck struck Besa and four companions as they walked to Eagle Pass. witnesses said a car blinded him. A court of inquiry ruled it an unavoidable accident under the circumstances.
Max Bierschwabe of Fredericksburg was named the Republican candidate for Congress in the 21st District at a San Angelo convention. He will oppose Nora Chas South, the Democratic nominee and current congressman. Edwin S. Mayer acted as temporary chairman. Judge C. K. McDowell was temporary chair at the 21st convention, with Mitchell Waldrop as permanent chair.
Students enrolled in the first aid course will gather Tuesday night at 7 o'clock in the fire station for the second class led by Dr T M Johnson. Thirty two students are enrolled and are asked to arrive promptly.
Taos Pueblo leaders and protesters clashed before a Senate subcommittee over the authority of Dr Sophie Aberle head of the U S pueblos agency. Tony Mirabal a former governor accused Aberle of overruling the pueblo council and denying men control. Commissioner John Collier defended Aberle stating her regime is broadly satisfactory and tribal authority remains intact.
Sixteen confessed conspirators were executed by firing squad in Moscow after secret sentences. Among the condemned were Leon, Kemeneil and Gregory Zincviel, exiled Leon Trotsky linked as plot leader, former dictator Josef Stan led the triumvirate at the head of the Soviet Union.
Ernest Herzing of Del Rio is among eight Del Rio Scouts featured in the San Antonio Express. The group travels from San Angelo to Dallas via San Antonio Austin and Waco visiting the University of Texas Exposition, Frontier Celebration at Fort Worth, and encampments in several cities. The party includes eleven West Texas towns represented in two buses and a car.

The Presbyterian Church in the United States faces a court challenge led by Moderator Meury B. Master to bar Dr J Gresham Machen and his faction from using the Presbyterian name. Machen and his supporters split from modernists, forming a fundamentalist faction in the denomination.
A mob of 2000 Chinese stormed Changtu Hotel in Shanghai killing two Japanese and injuring two others. Report says the attackers included two Japanese correspondents and two locals. another account mentions two travelers seriously injured and two kidnapped.
The body of Pleas L. Childress of Ozona is expected to arrive in Del Rio Wednesday morning from La Jolla California where he died of pneumonia. Interment will be in Ozona with arrangements pending. Childress helped develop Ozona since 1900 and helped found the Ozona National Bank. He served on executive committees of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and the Sheep and Goat Raisers Association of Texas. Survived by two sons Pleas Jr. and John, two daughters Mrs Grady Mitcham and Ethel, his mother Mrs Mary Childress, a sister Mrs Eula Montgomery, and three brothers Hugh Lee and Walter.
Secretary Wallace announced plans for an emergency sheep buying program as drought relief, along with a loan program to assure seed corn for drouth areas. He said he discussed the general drought situation with the President in an earlier conference, with Jesse W. Trapp, chairman of the department's special drought committee, also present.

U S and Mexican customs officials met Tuesday morning in the local Customs Office to discuss mutual activities. Participants included air patrol and border officials from both nations led by Lt Cmdr N M Nelson and Captain Eurler along with Mexican officials Tomas Vasque Consul Robinson and Macias.
