Mrs Prorence P Tempie, 45, ex-wife of Walter S Gifford, former head of American Telephone and Telegraph, is killed in a fall from an 11th floor New York City apartment. Her father, Walter Pitman, says she had been in ill health after divorcing Gifford in 1929.
San Francisco reported Chinatown rallies and far flung Chinese communities pledging about 1 250 000 for China’s defense fund as Chiang Kai-shek’s forces gain ground on the Shanghai front. Rescuers hunted for four more bodies after a naval aircraft struck an abandoned whaling ship in San Diego killing six people. Two others were injured, including J W Blackman of Cleburne Texas, as two corpses were recovered.
Mrs Harold Finney sister of Andy Osgood and daughter in law of Mrs Pearl Yancey of Del Rio was reported dangerously ill in a Houston hospital after a major operation. She had been in the hospital two weeks with several blood transfusions. Mr Osgood went to Houston to be with his sister as the family recently moved from Del Rio to Houston.

R J Bush brother of R E L Bush died Sunday at his Lenore North Carolina home. Funeral services were planned for Tuesday morning in Lenore. He was in his eighties and the last surviving brother of R E L Bush. A large family survives him. relatives note a 1930 visit by Mr and Mrs Bush to North Carolina, though he never traveled to Del Rio.
