The former Austrian burgomaster and former government hangman faces execution by hanging for arson and murder. Washington August 24 the Senate speeded to the White House a compromise resolution to bolster American neutrality in any foreign conflict. The measure, adopted 77 to 2, reverses policy by making the embargo on munitions shipments mandatory for all belligerents until February 29, next year.

Del Rio residents urged owners to confine dogs after a flood of complaints about dogs invading yards and biting people. Chief Amos Humphrey vowed a three day deadline before a dog catcher is deployed and owners pay three dollars for pound release or vaccination transport. If dogs remain loose after three days they will be shot. all breeds included.
Governor Gibb Graves signed the Calhoun bill granting immunity to newspaper reporters from revealing confidential sources before grand juries or other investigating bodies, and the measure became law in Montgomery on August 24.
Jones and Stasney geological firm of Albany and the Reliance Oil & Royalty Corporation completed a 4000 acre block north and west of Avoca in Jones County after nine core holes to limestone depths of 100 to 300 feet. Commercial leases were bought and a 3000 foot test will begin within 90 days to evaluate the Canyon sand series beneath Cisco sands in Shackelford and Jones Counties.
A Texas capital note recounts Ed Clark personal secretary to Governor Alf Landon Alfred? enjoying land and sea travel. The pair attend Port Isabel port dedication and a snapper banks fishing trip ends with Clark seasick. They also fly to San Augustine rodeo where plane gear concerns arise and Clark jokes about safety belts and landing.
Customs Officers Cole Blackwell and Earl Pranks posted bonds of $1,000 each after waiving preliminary hearing. They await grand jury action on November 4 in the case tied to the killing of a Mexican smuggler early Wednesday morning.
Unofficial results from August 24 indicate large majorities favor repealing state liquor prohibition. Major cities including Houston San Antonio Fort Worth and Dallas reported strong repeal support while many small communities opposed repeal by about two to one. Voting was light overall.

Stands are knee high and promising. bolls heavy, squares forming suggesting a good crop if rain comes, with first bale due by Sept 1 and ginning around Oct 1. L A Watkins notes bumper yield on older 416 acres while younger plants await more bolls.
City Clerk E F Howard reports $500 circulated in Del Rio from the first week of the San Felipe water system work with wages rising to about $1 000 weekly as more crews trench and lay pipe. City Commissioner Otto Koog supervises the construction and notes WPA projects nearby may push payrolls to $2 000 or $3 000 weekly as the new bridge, water lines, and reservoir connections proceed. The San Felipe system itself is not a WPA project.
Voters showed little interest in the amendment election with 272 ballots cast by 1 30 p m across seven precincts. Leading precincts included Val Verde Hotel 44 votes Graf Hotel 50 Central School 24 White Building 43 Court House 27 San Felipe 24 and Lockley Garage reporting zero votes.
The House adopted a resolution fixing adjournment for tonight on a voice vote. Congress sent to the White House a bill to bar suits after January 1 against the government for losses from dollar devaluation and the end of gold payment clauses in government obligations.
ADDIS ABABA Aug 24. Emperor Haile Selassie ordered the civil population to evacuate the capital within a week if Italy declares war. He warned air bombing as a likely first act and ordered valuables hidden in subterranean caverns. The 120,600 residents were instructed to scatter to distant points and avoid large gatherings.
A replica of radio station XER will be featured at the Chamber of Commerce banquet honoring Dr and Mrs John R B Brinkley at the Roswell Hotel in early September. Paul J Pong will direct the program to provide entertaining entertainment as the Brinkleys return from vacation and the opening of radio station KER is anticipated.
The Texas public safety commission sets high standards for 27 new highway patrol posts. Over 1,500 applications pour in as candidates face civil service and physical tests. 21 to 35 year old men meeting height and weight join the 10 year activity resume and 22 page form process.
President Roosevelt signed a bill strengthening the Agricultural Adjustment Act, prompting the Department of Justice to seek dismissal of more than 10 temporary injunctions blocking processing tax collections. The measure broadens AAA authority following earlier Supreme Court actions this fall.
British warships sail from Malta on August 29 to form a protective ring around the Suez Canal by September 1. The cruise plan concentrates forces from the Malta base to key points near the canal including Alexandria, aiming for rapid response within 400 miles of the entrance.
