Del Rio health officials announce a tuberculin test for all dairy cattle supplying the city. Dr. A H Hughes will test Monday. private owners may have their cows tested at no charge. Diseased cattle will be slaughtered with indemnity to owners.
J. D. Wrather president of the Del Rio Refining Company is expected to arrive soon from Muskegon Michigan where he has been supervising construction of a refinery similar to the local plant. The Michigan operation started August 1 and produces large quantities of Michigan crude daily. The Amarillo Producers and Refiners Corporation built the Michigan plant and is a joint owner of the Del Rio Refining Company facility.
Lieut Nick Mamer and Art Walker completed the first non stop round trip transcontinental flight in five days covering 7500 miles. They landed at Felts Field Spokane Washington at 6 PM after taking off from and returning to the starting point.
The Secretary of State at Austin grants a 50 year charter to Dun tile Products Company Inc of Del Rio. Incorporators are W H Ritchey F L Howard and Harry Iredale. The firm started July 2 1928 under Mr Ritchey and will manufacture and sell concrete products and other building materials in Del Rio and vicinity.
J. A. Johnson of the Sweetwater Refining Company and C. P. Jones of Richmond Virginia visited Del Rio in the early week. Jones and his wife toured the Del Rio Refining Company plant as Jones scouts West Texas sites for future business. Johnson said the Sweetwater plant runs about 1000 barrels daily and announced the upcoming Guilt Refining Company plant with 35000 barrel capacity will operate at Sweetwater within days.
The National Wool Marketing Council submitted a tentative plan to the Federal Farm Board for a central sales agency to market wool cooperatively. The plan, plus others, will be reviewed in Chicago in October, with aims to form an advisory council and federate regional agencies into a national cooperative sales structure.
FE B Neiswanger president of Central Power and Light Company of San Antonio arrives in Del Rio this afternoon to address a 7 30 pm lawn meeting at the old power plant site. Local employees and Hel Pio citizens will attend a two hour program with Neiswanger as a speaker and possible site inspection.
Mr. Trench, traveling representative of the Fidelity Tire and Rubber Company of Warren Ohio, will arrive in Del Rio tomorrow to confer on business with the Eagle Distributing Company. The Fidelity Tire and Rubber Company recently set up Texas headquarters in Fort Worth after a merger of the American Tire and Rubber, Deman Tire and Rubber, and Fidelity Tire and Rubber during July.
Prominent West Texas oilmen from San Angelo including Eugene Mays Dan Freel Ab Meyer Kemper Kimberlin and Dith Labery and family toured Del Rio last weekend. They observed a six inch casing driven to about 4609 feet and inspected nearby leases as word spread about the well’s results.
Special Correspondent from San Angelo reports Billy the Kid a West Texas goat sent to Secretary Stimson will reside at the Washington Zoo. The secretary confirmed the animal’s safe haven and promised care, following earlier confusion over the goat’s destination and ownership.
Spontaneous combustion is blamed for a fire that destroyed two hay barns behind the state hospital for the feeble minded in Austin as inmates slept early today. Loss is estimated at 2590 dollars.
Joseph Sanger head of the Coca Cola Bottling Company of San Angelo and other West Texas towns was a business visitor in Del Rio the early part of the week.
Tom Nolen former Crockett County Clerk and noted ranchman and oil man travels from San Antonio and San Angelo to Del Rio. He is staying at the Hotel Roswell while in town for business engagements.
Regents return home after a two day meeting to consider a building program replacing wooden shacks with modern facilities. The plan proposes borrowing from the school fund and repaying from oil and other state land royalties.
Wade West of Eagle Distributing Company heads to Muskogee Oklahoma on Saturday to resume schooling. Keith Whitt, formerly of San Angelo, will replace West at the local distributing firm.
Del Rio hosts a Rotary luncheon at the Hotel Roswell where H Wren of the Chamber of Commerce outlines how chambers back civic work and coordinate with clubs. He argues centralization favors city efforts and stresses organization and cooperation among groups. Wren is introduced by W F Littleton as others lead prayers and remarks.
An outbreak of anthrax in northern Uvalde County leads the State Livestock Sanitary Commission to impose a quarantine on several ranches in the Main and Dry Fire canyons north of Uvalde. Only a few cases are reported and one case is noted at Cline in the western county as officials work to halt spread.
Edward Taylor of Val Verde Irrigation Company remained unconscious after a horse fell on him. He suffered brain concussion as his head was trapped under the animal and was taken to the Williams Ganitorium following the accident on Monday.
Loney Roberts assistant secretary of the Del Rio Reining Company resigned late last week and left yesterday for Amarillo to accept another position. The vacancy remains unfilled, but an Amarillo Producers and Refinery Corporation Office manager is expected to arrive this week to fill the role.
EE B Jones head of the Neon Sien cepartment of the Eagle Dis tributing Company has been visiting Rocksprings Carrizo Springs and Eagle Pass and is expected to return to Del Rio later this week.
J. J. Warwell traveling freight and passenger agent for the Union Pacific lines of the Dallas division visits Del Rio as guest of P. Hertzoz of the Del Rio Refining Company to conduct railroad business.
C MM Beshick of San Antonio, grandson of local residents, inspected the Del Rio Catholic school site for the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. He, contractor-turned-inspector for Interstate Amusement, praised work and predicted interior occupancy by September 12.
Austin August 21 The first called session of the State legislature approved changing Zavalla County’s name to Zavala to reflect Lorenzo de Zavala signer of the Declaration of Independence. Other laws take effect today including mailed poll tax receipts banking and livestock rules school transfers and a State board of education. Governor Moody to name barber board member. a civil suit rule lets parties testify without being bound by their testimony but allows impeachment by other evidence.
Republican members of the Senate finance committee adopted a modification to the Reed domestic valuation plan for fixing tariff rates as part of the new tariff today.
The legislative investigation into the county fee system, started in Fort Worth, was resumed in Dallas today as officials continue to probe how fees are assessed and collected.
Dr. B. Fo Orrety health officer returned Monday from San Antonio where he spent one week inspecting the various names located there.
Mr Fleming stated Del Rio sold 1599 head of mutton for immediate delivery. The Freeman family and Mary Helen are in San Antonio this week. Mr Freeman is on vacation from the Del Rio Bank and Trust Company where he works. Miss Evelyn Garner departed this morning for visits in Houston and Austin.
Mr and Mrs H M Pennell and daughter Elizabeth of Marfa pass through Del Rio en route to San Antonio. Mrs Fennell is a daughter of County Commissioner B A Borroum of Del Rio.
Congressman Claude J. Hudspeth urged tariff changes to help Texas wool and mohair growers. He supported raising tariffs on tanf wool and mohair to about 32 or 33 cents while keeping a 14 cent rate on other goods. He promoted cooperative marketing by warehouses to stabilize prices and cited California practices for higher returns. He noted plans to return to Washington for the next session after visiting Del Rio and Crockett County.
Ab Mever Jr of San Angelo visited Del Rio and returned the same day. Mr Mayer, wool and mohair buyer for Draper and Company of Boston, reports purchasing all remaining wool and mohair in the Sanderson warehouse for the Boston concern. J M Lea runs the San Angelo office.
Two men were arrested by customs officers on Macie road between Eagle Pass and Brackettville. A new Ford truck and a new Ford platform were seized along with four hundred gallons of alcohol and three cases of whiskey. The men are being held in the Val Verde County Jail as the investigation continues.
Mid-Kansas Oi and Gas president Rh J Berry and vice-president Walter Flemita visited Del Rio early in the week then planned to join in an inspection tour of company property in West Texas. Berry said no immediate crude price change is expected and prices may hold. Flemine praised Del Rio’s prospects on the trip.
Cattle narrows progress with slow bidding and losses across categories. Calves and hogs show declines up to 25 cents, vealers weak, stockers slow. Sheep and lambs remain subdued with only scattered sales and prices easing from prior levels.
Mike Griffin field superintendent of Big Lake Oil Com pany joined a party returning from a meeting with Comstock. The Buick broke a wheel near Comet forcing repairs in Delfic. Griffin continued to Big Lake by bus while his party halted for vehicle service.
Alfred Williams narrowly escaped disaster as he tested the speed of his Mercury plane on the Severn River. Speeds ranged between 80 and 100 miles per hour as the aircraft lifted for takeoff, disrupting the Schneider Cup attempt.
Del Rio and Weemily expect patchy clouds tonight with partial clearing. West Texas remains partly cloudy with possible showers in the extreme west tonight and Thursday. East Texas will be fair tonight and Thursday.
