A suspended foot bridge at Sulphur Wells near Glascow collapsed during an annual celebration. About 100 people were on the 150 foot span when the cable broke, sending picnickers 20 feet into the Little Barren River bed. Six hurt seriously. early reports of four deaths were unfounded.
Berlin Germany August 20 Hitler receives 38362760 yes votes in a one man election after President von Hindenburg death. No votes total 4294654 and 872296 invalid. Analysts note no vote trend suggests waning enthusiasm compared with last November plebiscite.
Capt H W Rieck ranchman working in Kimble and Menard Counties was to speak for Carl Runge’s bid for the 21st district representative seat in Greenwood Park Del Rio at 8 30 Saturday. A late message from Rieck to Roosevelt home forced his return and canceled the event with no notice to The News.
A. R. Davis of Marathon released a clipped wing hawk on his grape arbor to deter English sparrows raiding ripening grapes. The hawk eats beef twice daily and sparrows vanished from his town end, saving the crop.

A Del Rio colored boy paid a 21.70 fine in Judge C. D. Smith's City Court after a Sunday drive down Gunner Street. The judge noted the offender as an old regular and quipped about a Barney Oldfield complex while recording the case.
President Roosevelt may attend the funeral of Henry T. Rainey late speaker of the House who died in St. Louis. The flag at the Capitol stood at half mast as Democrats ponder a successor. A caucus in late December or early January will choose a replacement before the 74th Congress convenes January 3.

Four people were wounded when David Wilson opened fire in a Houston store. One person was critically hurt as shoppers and workers fled. Wilson, described as a father of two, was beaten before surrendering the pistol.

Appointments announced by A Garland Adair include W A Keeling chair, with members from Austin, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Tyler, Mexia, Paris, Amarillo, Luling and other cities.
CHICAGO Aug 20 Samuel Insull Sr was ordered to stand trial with 16 co defendants September 18 on charges they used the mails fraudulently in marketing corporation securities. Insull had sought separate trial and offered to assume responsibility for the investment house and its crash while arguing the extended defense might endanger his health.
County records show thirty nine absentee votes cast for the run off primary. Thirteen were mailed in. In person voting ends August 22 and by mail August 23.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions tonight and Tuesday. Yesterday’s high reached 96 degrees with a low of 77, and this morning’s minimum was 78.

The Texas A and M Former Students Association invites the winner of the Alfred Hunter gubernatorial run-off and spouse to join the All Texas special tour. The trip, Oct 2 to Philadelphia for the Temple game, includes Washington and New York City stops. Officials hope Allred and Hunter accept.
The body of Benjamin F. Bryant, captain under General Houston in Texas independence, rests in the state cemetery at Austin after earlier burial at Bryant Station near Buckholts. Bryant, an ambassador to the Lapan and Tonkawa, settled in Milam County after independence. A 1843 Houston letter urged peaceful dealings with Indians. His grave was moved to the state cemetery with his wife following years later.
An Abernathy farmer trains about 200 pigeons to counter whirlwinds. When a whirlwinds heads for his garden he whistles and the birds fly out to disrupt the wind, saving the garden. Vic Lamb, editor of the Abernathy Review, witnessed pigeons perform the feat after a two hour wait. The farmer says pigeons are as trainable as dogs.
Jefferson G. Smith of Austin filed a campaign expense statement after withdrawing from the Democratic ballot for superintendent of public instruction. He lists expenses, criticizes campaign costs as too high, and urges stricter expenditure limits to open office to poorer candidates. The report was sworn before a notary.
Hereford news reports 10 year old J D Lawson of Amarillo drowned in the Tierra Blanca River when a wire broke as he swung over a deep hole. CCC workers helped after the fall. the body was recovered but revival attempts failed. The boy was visiting Hereford.
Mrs Eleanor Foster Lansing, 68, widow of former secretary of state Robert Lansing, died last night in Watertown New York from heart disease.
Fifty three federal prisoners including Al Capone traveled from Atlanta to Alcatraz on a special Del Rio to San Francisco route. Two heavily barred cars carried the inmates while guards maintained distance as spectators watched and taunts flew about Capone’s presence.
Al Capone, once the notorious public menace, is reportedly being moved with 42 inmates from Atlanta Penitentiary to the new Alcatraz Prison in San Francisco Bay. The exodus occurred early Sunday amid Federal secrecy, with evidence of Capone’s inclusion confirmed by newspapermen upon arrival.
Wellington Aug 20 An attempt to surrender funds failed as Elmer Barnes 27 a service station worker was shot and critically wounded while resisting two masked hold up men. He could not describe the assailants beyond their masks.
