The Southwest Texas push to reappoint D. to the State Highway Commission after his term ends next January includes backing for Stanford Payne of Del Rio. The U S Navy opened bids for six new destroyers as part of a major build plan. Three submarines will be built privately, while six more destroyers and three submarines will be constructed by the navy.

The Children's Bureau of the Labor Department allocates 48 660 to Texas for the first quarter of fiscal 1937 for special child welfare activities. From July 1 to September 30, 1936, 20 888 goes to crippled children services and 27 772 to maternal and child health services. In the prior period, February 1 to June 30, 1936, Texas received 49 999 for crippled children services 27 349 for general child welfare and 42 001 for maternal and child health services.
The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized a 25 percent reduction in railroad rates on cattle shipments from Oklahoma and parts of Kansas to Texas feeding points to bring relief.

Aug. 19 A M Johnston was held in an undisclosed jail today charged with the slaying of A E Russ four years ago. Mrs Russ signed the complaint charging Johnston with the murder, Sheriff F A Loyd said.
Lieut Col E H Marks announces a public hearing on flood control projects for the Nueces River and its tributaries to be held in Uvalde on September 23. Fowler of San Antonio chairs the district meeting to gather data from 22 counties with many officials and lawmakers expected to attend.
Robert Field Dowe age 63 nephew of Capt Luke Dowe of Del Rio died of a heart attack at his Las Rusias ranch in Mexico. Funeral services were held in Eagle Pass on Wednesday morning. He left Eagle Pass with his wife Monday in apparent good health and died later that night. Survived by widow Genevieve Black Dower daughter Rose Lee in Mobile Alabama four sisters and two brothers and several other relatives. He had served in public office in Eagle Pass and was a longtime Maverick County resident.
In Wilkes-Barre a rural Pennsylvania school board backed Anthony Manley a 60 year old one room teacher at Langan's Settlement praising him as a just man and promising a better position after parents had urged his removal for not whipping pupils or assigning homework Manley walks six miles daily to the isolated school and welcomed the board's decision
