Evangelist Kidnapping Tale Tells of Abduction Ride

North Carolina evangelist R. H. Askew, aged 28, walked into the Nashville police station saying he had been abducted since Tuesday. He reported three men in overalls took his clothes at Washington and drove him to Richmond, Washington and Knoxville before leaving him near Nashville. He said he was not mistreated.

Wick Confesses Slaying Yoakum Widow Mrs Ploeger

San Antonio reports that Frank Wick a 27 year old Yoakum health clinic employee confessed to killing Mrs Clara Ploeger a wealthy Yoakum widow whose body was found on the Gonzales Yoakum Highway. Detectives say Wick claimed she drove him to a bootlegging spot in Gonzales and described a free for all fight in which about a dozen people took part including the victim.

Belgian Balloon Sighted Over Austria in Stratosphere Flight

Belgian youths Max Cosyns and Neree Vanderlist launched a silk and rubber balloon with an aluminum crew ballonette from Hayenne. At 10 13 a m EST the craft was sighted over Badaussee Austria at three to four thousand meters altitude drifting toward Liezen.

Mills wins contest for Precinct No 4 county seat

J Y Mills of Pandale is declared the Democratic nominee for county commissioner Precinct No 4 after an election contest in Val Verde County. Dan Murrah, the contestee, appeals to the District Court. Of 100 ballots in Pandale and Jino, 32 were challenged. 19 votes were struck, 12 for Murrah and 7 for Mills. Original tally had Murrah 51 Mills 49.

Josephine Chacon To Receive Degree

Josephine Chacon, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Chacon, will receive a degree from the State Teachers College at Kingsville at the close of the August session during the Summer sessions of Texas colleges and universities. Mrs Chacon has taught in the Laredo schools.

Convicts Escape Jail Near Dickens After Knife Threat

Clarence Brown and Virgil Stalcup escaped from jail in Dickens today after menacing Mrs. Faye Arthur, daughter-in-law of the sheriff, with a knife. They were awaiting trial for a robbery of a bottling company truck and already face long sentences for robbery.

South Addresses Park Audience in Runoff Congressional Bid

Judge Charles L. South spoke to about 700 at Greenwood Park in Del Rio on Friday outlining his plans for Congress from the 21st district. Henry Bradley praised South’s livestock knowledge. South defended his independence and urged tariff protection, fair wealth distribution, and a low interest rate. Pat Murphy attended in support, having carried Val Verde County in the first primary.

Sanderson Murder Trial Ends in Mistrial

Braulio Gutierrez, deputy sheriff, faced murder charges in Sanderson. After deliberating from Thursday evening, the jury reported an eight to four deadlock, triggering a mistrial at 9 am Saturday at the 63rd District Court. The case stemmed from a July 4 fracas in which Manuel Coronado was wounded. Gutierrez argued self defense.
