Report says federal forces are switching allegiances to join rebel fighters amid growing unrest. Officials cite a surge of defections, intensifying clashes and broader support for the uprising across multiple provinces.
Reports from Havana detail renewed fighting after a brief calm as federal and rebel forces clash near Santa Clara. Widespread casualties among welders are reported as bodies are moved to Camp Colunas, with planes carrying ammunition en route and desertions noted around Holquin. Censorship tightened.

San Angelo Aug 18 The Tom Green County commissioners set the tax rate at 8 cents on the $190 valuation, unchanged from last year, with the total valuation about 27.5 million dollars. Nine employees were laid off and payroll reduced while fund rates saw only minor adjustments.
Washington reports Acting Secretary of the Treasury Lowman refused to rescind or modify his order closing bridges along the Mexican border at 9 p m He said he would not revoke the order at this time despite requests from Roy Campbell customs collector for the Texas district
Aug 16 WPI Jesse Av Peagin 41 died after a generator spark ignited accumulated gas in a pipeline station near Sparkman. The accident occurred Tuesday as Peagin was working at the facility.

Abilene colleges announce fall term openings. McMurray University holds registration September 8–9, Abilene Christian College lists September 14–16, Simmons University sets September 14–15. Entrance exams precede registration at all schools.

Some 25 men enrolled in an unemployed survey in Del Rio to seek work. They registered at Val Verde County courthouse with a committee planned to meet Mayor Long to request temporary employment. Many have not worked for months and face destitution and hunger.
London reports speed tests on the Clyde model for a 70,000 ton Cunard liner aimed at surpassing rival trans Atlantic speeds. France counters with a St Nazaire built liner expected to reach 29 knots with diesel electric drive and reserve for record attempts. Racing for speed will compare diesel electric and steam turbine propulsion and fuel efficiency amid rivalry.
