Austin Aug. 17 Colonel H H Carmichael director of the Department of Public Safety announced he had ordered Texas Rangers to cooperate with local officers to stop gambling law violations. He said the Rangers would act alone if local officials do not cooperate. The action was on his own accord and not approved by the Safety Commission or Governor Allred.
A Buncombe County grand jury indicted Martin Moore on first degree murder and burglary in the death of Helen Clevenger a New York University co ed in Asheville North Carolina. The case marks two capital offenses connected to the July killing.
Miss Virginia Ross sister of Mrs. F S Fritter and longtime Brackettville resident died Sunday. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday at 5 p m in Brackettville. She is survived by her sister and several nieces and nephews including Judge John Fritter Hancock Fritter Pat Fritter Sam Fritter and Mrs Odum of Sinton Texas.
Funeral services for Joe Phillips Seminole Indian scout were held in Brackettville with full military honors in Seminole Cemetery below Fort Clark. He fought at Devil's River and tailed marauders, served under General Shafter, and was remembered by H P Roberts of Del Rio as a fellow scout. The funeral drew the largest Negro attendance Brackettville ever saw.
