Heavy rains in Enid and Cherokee caused Cottonwood Creek to burst its banks flooding three city blocks with three and a half feet of water. Two hotels and all stores flooded, hundreds homeless, city dark, bridges out, cattle losses pegged at 300000 dollars, and over 40 prisoners evacuated from the county jail as tracks flooded nearby.
Houston dispatch notes Red Cross relief under way in hurricane zones with at least 39 dead. Stations for destitute and homeless opened as Brazoria and Freeport face food and clothing shortages. Wharton mayor reports dire conditions and possible $10,000 feeding shortfall. Farmers and bird populations suffer heavy losses.
J Earl Smith a Tulsa lawyer who defended Harvey Bailey in a Kansas bank robbery was found shot beside his car near Indian Hill Country Club. He had a bullet hole in the head and another in the car while a gun was not found. The case remains unsolved with few clues as to the killer.
Two vehicles collided on the South Loop near Julius Franks farm late Tuesday afternoon. Otto Koog and Filimon Dominguez drove the wrecked cars. occupants escaped with minor cuts and bruises. Dominguez family was spilled along the roadside as Koog’s car dragged it several feet. Mrs Dominguez feared injured. ambulance rushed to scene. Koog claims Dominguez cut in front of the larger car without warning to enter Franks farm driveway. Koog car sustained about 100 dollars in damage. Dominguez car almost total loss.
The case of Captain W. N. Lancaster, charged with the triangle slaying of Haden Clerke, was submitted to a Circuit Court jury in Miami. Judge H. F. Atkinson told the panel that verdicts based on circumstantial evidence must show the circumstances conflict with innocence.
In San Antonio on August 17 the prosecution rested in the court martial of Lieut. Herbert C. Lichtenberger former Randolph Field flyer charged with robbing the Schertz State Bank. Defense attorney Franklin Spears stated he will finish the case in one day.
Gainesville Georgia sees two textile mills resume with weekly payrolls around 9000 dollars after a shutdown since June. New York stock market seat sells for 150000 dollars, up 30000 from prior sale, unseen since March. Everett Washington reports Jamison lumber mill back in operation employing 85 workers per shift, fourth restart in 60 days. AT&T board approves regular dividend of 2.25 dollars, a rarity during business downturn. HUNTSVILLE Texas Aug 17 Twenty seven convicts freed from Ramsey State Prison Farm No Three during the Saturday night hurricane had not returned by noon today Manager Lee Simmons said I had not given them a thought Simmons said he was devoting his entire time to rehabilitating seven prison farms damaged in the hurricane.
D K Martin of the Texas Highway Commission spoke to the Rotary Club about using federal road aid to retire county road bonds. He noted $7,000,000 of federal funds must be spent by July 1, 1933 and highlighted Texas leading in mileage and area. He defended the commission against corruption charges and praised Highway 90 work and ongoing efforts to complete gaps in the state highway system.
General Jose Sanjurjo, once head of the Civil Guard under King Alfonso, led the brief Royalist revolt against the Spanish republic and was captured while attempting to flee across the Portuguese border.
Washington Aug 17 Congress faces revising the tax law to remove inequities and consider a general manufacturers sales tax with a low rate. Sen Reed Smoot says changes are needed after reports of excessive rates harming business. Rep Baldridge urges replacing targeted rates with broad low tax on industries and repeal of a two cent bank check levy. Hoover calls for revision where rates hurt industry. Smoot optimistic on business outlook.
Harry Darder and James A. Perry face felony charges after waiving examining trial. Each was bound over for the grand jury on $1000 bonds. Perry was arrested in San Antonio for stealing clothing from North Heights residents. the items were recovered. Carder was linked to a burglary at B. J. McDowell’s home with a sapphire ring and a 30-30 rifle stolen. The ring was traded for a meal and the rifle recovered.
About 1000 people heard J. H. Fisher the Rev Chas Nixon and Judge J J Foster offer remedies for Del Rio ISD finances. They proposed voluntary partial tax payments, early payment of taxes not due until January, or hiring attorneys to collect delinquent rolls at Greenwood Park on Tuesday night.
Texas to let contracts totaling at least 3.5 million dollars on September 19 and 20 as part of a Federal loan program. Texas aims to expand the highway network across multiple regions while meeting a 30 hour work week and minimum wage requirements. The move is expected to double current work forces and support unemployed labor during construction.
Odessa Texas August 17 1932 Superintendent Murry H Ply reports a 33 1 3 percent budget cut from last year. The 1932 333 budget totals under $60 000 from about $90 000. Teachers salaries have been reduced by 10 percent.
Albany Aug 17. With Jacob Gould Schurman Jr on the stand at the ouster hearing for Mayor James J Walker today John J Curtin the mayor s attorney showed that when Russel T Sherwood was located in Atlantic City and later in Mexico City Walker s aid was not solicited in bringing Sherwood back for questioning. Schurman testified that Charles Kerrigan Walker s assistant told him the mayor did not expect Sherwood to be found. Curtin introduced records to show NY police asked Atlantic City police to check Sherwood s presence and that Schurman asked NY officers to make no effort to service a subpoena until Sherwood returned to New York.
