Northwest forest fire conditions remained critical as winds fan fresh flames. The Nelson Helway fire in British Columbia raged beyond control toward the international boundary with crews withdrawing. In Trinity Forest, California about 500 men fought a three mile front attempting to contain the blaze.
The railroad retirement board ordered all Class One railroads to pay to the United States treasurer one tenth of one percent of their payrolls for July to fund the railroad pension law. The total assessment is $125 000 with payments due by August 25.

Funeral services were held for R. R. Henshaw 35 a former Del Rio resident and brother of County Judge G. J. Henshaw of Sanderson. He collapsed Monday evening in front of the Labor Temple in San Antonio and died Tuesday in a San Antonio hospital. A letter on his person cited several paralytic strokes and was signed by Judge Henshaw. He lived in Del Rio in 1923 and worked as a painter.
Four absentee votes were cast Thursday records in the office of County Clerk W. A. Hopkins show. Wednesday was the first day for absentee balloting for the run off primary August 25. Absentee voting in person will end on August 22 and by mail on August 23.
Drivers of drayage trucks in Portland return to work after agreeing to arbitration of wage increase demands. The strike began yesterday morning and ended today as parties resolved the pay dispute through arbitration.

Arthur Wilson a 29 year old Cleveland steel chemist was returned in irons to the United States from Port of Spain Trinidad aboard the liner Pan America to answer a murder charge. He used the name Robert Jones while aboard the Lady Nelson and was identified as Wilson. He will be taken to El Paso for trial on the murder of Irene DeBolt near Van Horn nine months ago.
The Park Committee of the Chamber of Commerce inspected three sites for a Del Rio state park with a fourth site to be checked soon. Dr. B F Orr chaired the tour with Jas C Nelts and Ralph Sellers guiding, visiting Devil's River sites and a San Felipe Creek area.
The Pandale Juno precinct contest of the Val Verde County commissioner race will be heard Friday at 10 in District Court before the Democratic executive committee. Chairman Grady Lowrey said the hearing was postponed from Thursday. Dan Murrah is contesting the seat against H J Y Mills who led Mills with 51 to Mills 49 votes in the July 28 primary.
Del Rio and vicinity expect generally fair conditions tonight and Friday. The day yesterday reached a high of 97 and a low of 78, with this morning’s minimum at 78.
An itinerant photographer was escorted from the city after attempting to pressure City Hall officials into issuing a permit at no cost. He claimed to take portraits and promised a charcoal etching by mail, admitting he fleeced victims in other towns before moving on. Police identified his credentials as fake and said no charges could be filed here since no scam completed locally.
Nineteen men were hired Wednesday and Thursday by the Re-Employment Agency for Brown & Root, the road contractor for Highway No 3 re-routing. Earlier, Monday, 43 men found work through the agency, 39 of them with Brown & Root, as L. A Turner prepares for two concrete bridge projects over the San Felipe Creek.
A Thursday report from Ed Block county relief administrator shows 150 registered workers were graveling streets, maintaining school grounds and parks. The August relief allotment was about $1.50 per person per month, limiting available work.
In Toronto and Detroit, investigators pursue clues as John S Labatt is abducted. A two hour phone exchange with the kidnapper shows no personal contact with the ransom, while Hugh Labatt awaits word in London Ontario. Police mobilize across cities to resolve the case.

Delinquent tax payoff checks totaling around 400 have been paid into the city treasury since August 1 after a Thursday check. Applicants for home loans must show enough funds to cover all delinquent taxes on the property.
News reached Del Rio Thursday of the death of Mrs. J. L. Langford former Del Rio resident. She died of apoplexy in Gladewater and was buried in Fort Worth last week. Her husband worked as a bricklayer during their years in Del Rio.
