Hospital authorities and state police hunted today for fifteen patients who escaped during a fire at the State Hospital for the Insane in Mount Pleasant Iowa. The blaze caused $260,000 in damage and over 1600 inmates were relocated to Iowa Wesleyan College dormitories.
In Anniston Alabama on August 11 a violent confrontation arose as four white men were wounded while pursuing a Black suspect accused of attempting to kidnap a white baby. A posse of about 200 men searched for the suspect after the baby's mother struck him with a hammer averting the alleged abduction.
Ecuador reports government action to end sale of twisted Jivaro heads called tzantzas. Police flood Loja region to arrest Indians linked to killings of four Ecuadorians and two German prospectors. Export banned. some foreigners still buy as souvenirs.
AMARILLO Aug 11 P L McDade used a rifle that wouldn t shoot to recover his stolen automobile. He spotted a man entering the car and leaped onto the running board as it pulled away. He pointed the unloaded rifle at the driver who stopped the car and fled.
Herbert Hoover marked his 62nd birthday away from home as he traveled by car from Idaho to Nevada after a fishing trip. The former president was not in residence in Palo Alto, California, on August 11.
The heat wave tops 118 degrees in McKinney, Collin County, with Del Rio and Pecos also facing extreme conditions. Forecaster H L Molyneux says no relief expected this week as hot, dry winds continue and thundershowers remain uncertain. Four deaths and numerous prostrations linked to the heat. Maximum Monday reached 99 degrees, humidity low, intensifying discomfort.
Del Rio and vicinity expect fair conditions tonight and Wednesday. Yesterday’s high reached 99 with a low of 75. This morning’s minimum was 74.
Austin reports the Texas Department of Public Safety observes its first birthday highlighting reforms since consolidating the ranger force and highway patrol. Albert Sidney Johnson praised cross agency cooperation and noted the identification bureau logged 27 422 fingerprints with 4 676 identifications, 2 210 car thefts and 1 400 recovered, plus highway patrol collections of 508 817 96 dollars with 267 133 32 spent.
Louie the homing pigeon, liberated in Colombia two years ago, traveled over 2000 miles to reach White Plains New York. Identified by an aluminum legband 999 MAM 1924, he belonged to H P Urbain of White Plains. Urbain started pigeon fancy in Belgium and imported Louie from Belgium as part of a top stock line.
Dallas August 1 1A Shoerit Frank Couch reports Harry Howe accused of shotgun slaying of his wife was killed today by two of the woman’s brothers. Howe was slain while en route from jail to the courthouse for trial on his wife’s murder.
The proposed mohair and wool price increase from Texas points to the East was dropped after a telegram from William Sedgman, chairman, showed Gulf Steamship Committee and Atlantic Seaboard Freight Bureau officials defeated the plan. The San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and local group argued the hike would cost Southwest Mohair and wool millions annually and threaten Eastern markets.
An Oklahoma police officer arrived in Pittsburgh with a self built portable jail rigged on his car deck to transport 26 year old J Mills from Allegheny County jail to Oklahoma penitentiary where Mills is wanted for escape. He served one year of a three year forgery sentence and was arrested in Pittsburgh.
A Washington grand jury named Commande Yostyuki Tsimiya and Lieutenant Commander Okira Jaumnaki as agents who allegedly conspired with John S. Parnsworth to deliver American defense secrets to Japan. Names of other Japanese agents were not indicted in the new Farnsworth indictment.
General Nicolas Rodrigue head of the Mexican Gold Shirts baseist group was arrested and expelled from Mexico to the United States. The organization was formally dissolved in Nuevo Leon last week as part of crackdown following July Monterrey unrest and anti Communist orders.
The Val Verde Wool and Mohair Company sold 145 006 pounds of 12 month wool to A and Baker of San Angelo at 32 to 24 cents a pound. A 16 000 pound clip brought 32 cents and a 24 000 pound clip brought 31 cents. Total sold to Walker and Company of Boston. Remaining wool in Del Rio warehouses totals 425 000 pounds.
Federal and customs officers seized narcotics valued at 38000 aboard the American steamer Black Tern as it docked in Boston. Officials said the shipment was linked to international smuggling and the captain of the line was absolved of responsibility.
Britain saw a July unemployment total of 1,662,072, down 50,604 from June and the lowest since March 1930. Registered employed rose to about 10,895,000, a 63,000 increase, with the Northeastern area recording the largest drop. Other sectors including coal mining cotton goods manufacture metal products transport and distributive trades also showed gains.
In Shell Lake Wisconsin Mrs Campbell placed washout signs along a road and motorists slowed as they read warnings. She sought to protect her washing from dust and claimed drivers diverted away from the farm area.
The United States Weather Bureau reported a cult storm of slight intensity about 200 miles east of Brownsville. The storm has moved very little in the last six hours.
