Funeral services for Ernest Buck s i Billings a five week old infant of Mage ala igist to be held at 4 o clock Monday afternoon in the Doran Chapel. The infant died Sunday morning at 1 15 in his home at 303 East Broadway after a three day illness. He was born in Del Rio on June 30 1936. Surviving are his parents three sisters Violet June and Mary Lou and the grandparents Mrs Annie Billines and Mr and Mrs Vernon Walmsley.
Dr John R Brinkley reportedly caught two tuna near Liverpool Nova Scotia. One fish set a world record by taking 20 minutes to land, while the second required 1 hour 20 minutes. The Dr Brinkley I yacht was anchored offshore in Canadian waters.
Fires started by burning trash on vacant lots owned by M N Barry near Cinera Street and by B Finch Peirce east of Dr D A York residence caused minor blaze scares. Chief Fr J Schmidt urged residents outside fire zones to clear 20 feet around piles, avoid large fires, watch and douse flames, and report dangerous conditions. Asphalt fires at Roach's prompted a fire department response with no damage.
Fort Worth reports sheriff Carl Smith died after a month long illness following a knife wound and head injuries suffered when a mob attacked his car and trailer near Pleasure Island in Harlandale. The assailants threatened to cut Mrs Sterling's throat as the couple fled to the coast.
A Del Rio youth, Young Netts son of Mr and Mrs das C Netts, is shown in a newsreel at the Princess Theatre. The transfer of midshipmen from the Oklahoma to the Wyoming and the Arkansas is illustrated. The move frees the Oklahoma to take aboard Americans endangered by the Spanish revolt. Mrs Netts identified her son among the midshipmen exiting the Oklahoma during the matinee viewing.
Roger Gillis president of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association travels to Washington to confer with the Department of Agriculture on Soil Erosion Act programs. He will learn potential participation plans, including possible production controls and grazing area retirements, with Texas and Oklahoma stockmen involved.
The Associated Press reports Marcus Barnes, 69, died of heart failure while tending his wife in their Waco home amid dangerous heat. Denton reached 108 degrees, with unofficial Temple readings near 108. Dallas and Fort Worth posted 107 and 105 respectively, as storms offered little relief across East Texas.
In Barrow Alaska Dr Henry W Griest reports hunger among eastern Eskimos who have begun eating their sled dogs after lack of food and wolf predation. Reindeer supervisor Frank Daugherty sought permission to move 3000 reindeer to aid native wards in Barter Island district but was refused.
The body of Joseph A. McCain about 60 was sent from Del Rio to Jackson for burial. He was found dead along the railroad east of Brackettville Saturday evening, death attributed to natural causes. The ranchman who found him led to Brackettville. the remains were prepared in Del Rio after identification papers and relatives wired for burial in Jackson.
The Continental Ranch company of Comstock bought Tepco immsed lambs in the Del Rio territory at five dollars per head, purchasing about 4,000 head. Harold Martin led the deal, with other figures noting 2,500 head and wool sales to Wright Brothers at 93.5 cents per pound. Mohair contracts for fall delivery were reported by J. M. Lea at fifty and zero cents per pound.
At Port Sam Houston on August 10 General Frank Parker confirms about 200 expert riflemen from the Eighth Corps Area will enter the National Rifle matches at Camp Perry Ohio from August 24 to September 12. Participants include regular army officers enlisted men O. T. C. cadets CM. T. and national guard personnel. Texas national guard teams supply 14 entrants with captain coach 10 members and two alternates. Over 25 reserve officers seek places and will be narrowed to 14 by the War Department.
The Spanish government said rebels were crushed in key areas near Madrid. About 100 Americans still in Madrid were set to depart tonight. Loyalist forces claimed heavy rebel casualties and a major victory near Navalperal, with continued offensives and a commission formed to safeguard art treasures.
National Park Service geologists report finding two large elephant teeth believed to be from a long vanished lake region in Grapevine Springs, Big Bend country. The area yields dinosaur bones, sharks, giant turtle fossils, and over 100 shell specimens with numerous volcanic rocks, including petrified oysters reaching 30 inches across.
American embassy officials urged all Americans in Madrid to leave by train tonight describing an increasingly threatening situation. Charge d Affaires Eric Wendlin said by this last opportunity to evacuate the city may have passed as the train departs. In Copenhagen Charles Lindbergh anger over photographers surfaced at the scientific Congress as he planned to demonstrate his mechanical heart after group shots were arranged.
Ninety-two per cent of Pecos Texas city taxes for 1935 have been collected, Mayor J. Starley announced. He sets a goal of ninety-five per cent and notes progress toward it.
Six men at the Memphis CCC camp requested discharge on August 10 after payment of the veterans bonus. They cited eligibility changes and cited desire to pursue other work or return home.
