Harlingen August 10 Aged 19 George Dunlap was fatally wounded and Cameron County highway patrolman Mackey Chaudoin was critically wounded in a gunfight after officers located a reportedly stolen truck. Two other men were arrested and later said they took part in several robberies. Dunlap died soon after and physicians feared Chaudoin would die.
Nelson Rounswell publisher of The Panama American is released on 2500 bail after a criminal libel arrest by Major General Harold B. Fiske and Colonel James V. Heidt over July 12 articles calling Fort Clayton "death by own action post."
William A. Whalen, district director of immigration and naturalization with headquarters in Galveston, toured Del Rio on Friday and Saturday. He departed Saturday for San Antonio after the inspection tour.
Llano observes the 62nd anniversary of the Packsaddle fight on Pack saddle Mountain near Llano on August 4, 1873. Survivors recount the clash with a band of Indians, three killed, four wounded, and the Moss family pivotal in the defense. The county seeks a historical marker and access path to the site.
The Lower Colorado River Authority completed the purchase of Buchanan Dam and surrounding lands to be submerged with permits on all power sites in Llano Travis and Burnet Counties. The deal totals 1.65 million dollars from the Colorado River Company.
In Ochiltree the school has been discontinued after insufficient pupil numbers. Pupils will ride buses to Perryton for classes. Ochiltree, once a thriving town of several hundred, relocated mainly to Perryton after the railroad bypassed it.

An Illinois Central freight train was dynamited three miles south of Springfield injuring an engineer, a conductor, and a fireman with the last two badly hurt. The blast derailed the locomotive and ten of its one hundred ten empty cars. Officials cited ongoing turmoil in the Illinois coal miners dispute between the United Mine Workers and Progressive Miners' Organization as the likely cause.
Suits for 1916 delinquent taxes totaling 19182.09 against the Dallas Labor Temple Association and 14136.07 against the Dallas Chamber of Commerce were filed by Assistant City Attorney Hughes Knight with 24 other tax suits. Co defendants include Silvia R Keller Bert Keller and the Federal Reserve Bank as lienholders. The Labor Temple sits at 1727 Young Street.
Austin officials announce that 104 acts from the biennial session become law. The measures include creation of the department of public safety and the merge of the ranger force with the State Highway Patrol into a unified state police system. Dove and quail seasons are set with concurrent southern zone seasons.
Delbert B. Barnes of Owasso was killed and six other Oklahoma National Guardsmen were injured when a truck carrying 13 Stillwater unit members overturns six miles north of Marlow during transit to Fort Sill for the annual encampment.
The Sisters of the Sacred Heart have purchased the Villepas Building near Laredo's business district from I A Porter and will move the College of the Sacred Heart from Mexico City. Twenty sisters and several students will come to teach and study as remodeling and additions are planned for a September opening.

Rush D. Holt the youngest Democratic Senator from West Virginia entered a Baltimore hospital for an operation. He said he hated to leave Washington during tax program debates and supported the plan with a tax burden on those who can bear it. He was accompanied by his parents Dr and Mrs M S Holt of Weston. Holt joked about politicians knifing him.
Pan American Clipper completes third Alameda to Honolulu flight on schedule arriving at 9 03 a m Central Standard Time. The airship departed Alameda at 5 pm CST yesterday and touched down safely in Honolulu.
Austin reports that relief clients are to undergo medical examinations to assess physical welfare after transitioning from relief rolls to WPA jobs. Mrs. Val M. Keating notes advisory committees from county medical societies will direct the examinations to gauge health outcomes.
Heat wave relief arrived in South Texas as thunder showers helped drop temperatures after record highs. Dallas forecast cautioned a seven to eight degree fall by Saturday night with 93 expected Sunday. Del Rio tied 1995 heat at 98 degrees as month records fell and month highs neared 111 in the past.
About 1000 visitors attended Sandersons two day rodeo event that began with a colorful parade. The field overflowed with cars and the grandstand full as usual riding and roping events got underway. Burro roping provided a notable innovation. Attendees included Stanford Payne Jack Belcher E F Measels J Turney Terrell Ralph Sellers and Julian LaCrosse from Del Rio.
The Senate Finance Committee backed higher taxes on small income taxpayers by cutting exemptions and raising surtaxes in lower brackets. It also dropped a house inheritance levy in favor of higher estate taxes, estimating over 400 million dollars in additional revenue.
Investigation into official conduct of J. E. McDonald sparked a clash between C. A. McCormick director of markets and warehouses and C. L. West state auditor staff member during a legislative committee hearing. A fight broke out and both men called it a misunderstanding after being separated in the corridor.
