Showers fall on ranch areas as 28 Del Rio Girl Scouts complete a week at Camp Pawcett near Barksdale. The first camp in the history of Camp Pawcett featured swimming crafts dances and outdoor cooking. Prizes were awarded for costumes and stunts with Choctaw Sioux and Iroquois groups participating.
The National Safety yearbook shows Western regions led in accident deaths in 1938 with Nevada at 141.6 per 100000, Central States 73.4, South Central 66.7, South Atlantic 66.4, while North Dakota posted the lowest at 32.1 nationwide.
The Aug 9 Lynn beauty contest was called off, with organizers citing unspecified issues. No winner was announced as preparations were halted and participants were informed.
Del Rio Junior Chamber of Commerce moves to back new state fishing rules at the Texas Legislature. A bill drafted by Rep. Al Cauitharn would ban trot lines in Lake Walk and Devil's Lake, cap daily catches, limit possession, set bass and catfish to twelve inches, ban certain bait, adjust bass and crappie seasons, and extend quail season.
Directors of the Freight Rate Equity Federation urge Texas to equalize freight rates with other regions. They request Attorney General Mann to form a study board with a $30 000 appropriation and to use results before the Interstate Commerce Commission. The federation, active since May, seeks broader East and South Texas representation.
Partly cloudy tonight and Thursday with scattered thunder showers and higher temperatures. Yesterday's high reached 82 and low 72, while this morning's low was 68. West Texas forecast calls for scattered thunder showers in the southeast portion and a warmer night.
In Gillespie County a garter snake about eighteen inches long reportedly choked a rattler to death after a half hour of struggle. Peter Creemwelge of Cherry Spring witnessed the fight, then the garter snake slipped away and returned to ensure the kill. Deer in Kerr County were observed mobbing a large rattler, and Texas hosts several venomous snakes including copperhead and cottonmouth moccasin. Coral snake appears mainly in humid forests and has a deadly nervous-system venom with no known antidote.
Berlin reports a unified German critique of Poland over Danzig as talks hint at a Hitler-Forster meeting. Forster reportedly arrived near Berchtesgaden while officials avoided confirming contact with the Nazi Danzig leader. The DNB and papers accuse Poland of threatening Danzig and provocative actions in the economic lifeline issue.
A horned frog captured near Berkley Massachusetts drew news attention after a biologist traced its origin to Clarendon Texas. It was traded to Mrs Alice Kier of Beverly Massachusetts by Mrs Fred Russell of Clarendon in a souvenir exchange. The frog traveled a mile and three quarters in a big black automobile before returning home.
The Ruler of Mandi in Punjab offers a marriage bounty for any subject who marries a widow to curb white slavery and widow abuse. Hindu custom resists remarriage, and progress is slow as suttee burnings still occur in remote areas.
San Angelo Texas reports 493 ranchers took 1939 wool loans totaling 500 829 17 on 2 729 043 pounds. Only 27 repaid, leaving 466 loans outstanding on 2 619 938 pounds worth 480 325 80. Maturities run to May 31 1940 with 4 percent interest.
County educational exhibits will be shown at the State Fair of Texas with Extension Service cooperation. County Agent J B Kidd was advised to chair a committee of interested persons and lead preliminary exhibit preparation. The program supports agricultural and home economic improvement and includes a post Aug 15 review by a standing committee. Last year Val Verde County’s exhibit, with Del Rio Chamber of Commerce cooperation, praised for prickly pear eradication efforts.
Alva Webber 80 a retired stockman died Monday in a local hospital. Last rites were held Tuesday at 5 pm in the Doran Chapel with Christian Science service read by Mrs. Cole Y Blackwell. Interment followed at the Masonic Cemetery under Doran Funeral Home direction. Surviving are his nephew Alva Baker and several nieces and two sisters Ettie Findley and Jessie Winburn. Active pallbearers and honorary pallbearers were named from local men including Jo Autrey Walker H J Mills R T Hunnicutt Ben Bendele Carlyle McFarland and others.
Chinese Vice Consul Tein-Lon Ouang of Houston visited Del Rio from Monday to Sunday and stayed with Villa Acuna resident Wille Wong. He and his wife will attend the inauguration of the new Chinese School in El Paso.
Official notice to Lyle S. Almond, Val Verde County tax assessor collector, shows the 1939 state tax rate is 77c per $100 valuation, the highest. The 1938 rate was 49c. Of 1939, 35c state, 35c for school, 7c Confederate veteran pension fund. The 1938 split was 35c state, 7c school, 7c Confederate pension. The increased amount is entirely in the schools.
A special venire of sixty is summoned for the Sixty-Third District Court on Aug 14. Flueterio Gonzalez is charged with criminal assault after a Val Verde County grand jury indictment. His attorney Arthur Gonzalez was ill to attend the regular term. Also to be tried is Joe Pullum on narcotics violations with Attorneys Beverly Rust and Julian LaCrosse appointed by Judge Brian Montague.

Blanton a Dallas industrial engineer economist forecasts a new era of prosperity for the United States in 1940 49 based on gold reserves bank deposits and credit trends He warns war and politics could delay the shift but notes the pattern of cycles from high to low and back and suggests the forties may eclipse the 1920 29 boom
Showers continued across the ranch region bringing 0.5 to 2.2 inches in several counties including Comstock Brackettville Spofford Uvalde Eagle Pass Loma Alto Carta Valley Rocksprings San Angelo Sonora and the Whitehead ranches. Del Rio logged 0.66 inches with forecasts of more thundershowers, improving August totals well above normal and easing drought concerns. Highway closures occurred near Sanderson and Rocksprings due to high waters as Rio Grande levels rose slightly but stayed within banks.
Sam E. McMath and E. A. Stricklen led the luncheon program at the Roswell Hotel. McMath urged the club to reflect the city’s economic life and boost membership to at least sixty. Stricklen stressed friendship and fellowship as key Rotary factors. Directors later voted to donate $10 monthly for upkeep of a proposed Del Rio public library.
