He noted 10,000 bales need picking in Refugio with transport promised, and 1000 hands needed in Bee County. He offered 6 cents per hundred pounds and said Unat area cotton is good. Puquay oversees five counties from Uvalde with about 36,000 registered seeking work.
Dr Thomas of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce met Del Rio and Medina Uvalde officials to discuss rerouting United States Highway 3 between Sabinal and D Hanis as a Federal project at no cost to the State. The plan would shorten the route by 23 miles, bypass Sabinal’s business district, remove the dangerous underpass, and reduce water hazards, aiming to boost tourist traffic along the Texas corridor.
Texans in Val Verde County and statewide face six constitutional amendments on August 23. Amendments cover social security funding for needy children and the blind, state bank stockholder liability, officer fee restoration, early tax discounts, Harris County road tax changes, and prepayment tax provisions.
In Yellowstone Park on July 19 two children escaped a bear that dragged their sleeping bag from their West Thumb camp. Curtis J. Butts Jr. 14 carried teeth marks on his hand and hip. Tessie 5 was not seriously hurt. The father recounted chasing the bear as it dragged the bag open along the zipper.
Senators Hatch and Chaves urged President Roosevelt to name Bam G Bratton, federal circuit judge of Albuquerque, to the Supreme Court. Hatch said Bratton is right at the top among names mentioned after a White House conference.
Senator Morris Sheppard announced President Roosevelt approved a $4 500 000 allocation for the Possum Kingdom dam on the Brazos River. The site lies 18 miles northwest of Mineral Wells and final approval rests with the comptroller general.
Washington August 6 President Roosevelt proclaims a new commercial agreement with the Soviet Union by which Moscow agrees to buy 40 million dollars worth of American produce next year. Pittsburgh four shot to death four members of a family found slain by Frank Gregor in their home. Philadelphia doctors fight for a newborn girl after a post mortem operation to save the child and mother Mary Boccassini amid tubercular meningitis.
Austin Aug 6 Ed Clark secretary of state buys the peak of Mount Emory in Big Bend National Park for 10 dollars at one dollar per acre claiming about 10 acres. He donates the amount to a million dollar park fund and urges Texas citizens to buy acres to develop a Yellowstone like park. He envisions canyons peaks springs and petrified trees benefiting Texas. The body of Gladys Witt an air stewardess killed in a December crash was recovered in Salt Lake City mortuary care pending.
President Roosevelt refused to take a public stand on a suggested October special session for farm legislation, saying it was up to the Senate. Senate signers led by Senator Black urged action by October 15, fearing crop preparations. other leaders believed Congress would address farm laws in January.
Warplanes bombed a British tanker and an Italian steamer off the Algerian coast near Spain. The tanker reportedly reached Algiers safely. An unconfirmed report said the Italian vessel Talan sailed to aid the British ship and its wounded commander. insurgent gains and government sieges frame the broader contest around Huesca and the Aragon front as Madrid notes intensified clashes and munitions captures while Franco’s drive stiffens.
Five new teachers join the Del Rio Independent School District faculty as announced by the Board of Education. J R Waddell from Kentucky Dawson DeViney of San Marcos Miss Odie Belle Jordan of Denton and Lillie Mae McKinnes of Staples join Del Rio Junior and High Schools in home economics and physical education Spanish. The district opens September 6 with teachers reporting September 1 and students on September 2.
Powhatan Ohio Aug 6 a county judge credited public whippings with cutting juvenile delinquency by nearly 60 percent in the coal town. Marshal Edward Carpenter acts as prosecutor judge and jury over youths 8 to 15 punished on a barrel in the square, with Dr G L Ramses praising the practice as effective in keeping the younger generation controlled.
The board of control announced Big Spring has been chosen as the site for an $817,000 hospital for the insane, after competition from 14 cities. Claude Teer, chairman, said selection is definite with one condition to complete bid proposals, and construction is to start immediately.
A fatality occurred when an awning collapsed on Ros Henrick in Terrell amid a storm that damaged farms and buildings across half a dozen Texas communities. Crops suffered extensive losses while fires flared from lightning and an oil well derrick was toppled by wind at Laird Hill near Kilzere.
