A grandson of Charles Dickens, Rear Admiral Gerald Charles Dickens, has been named to command the Reserve Fleet. He is the son of Sir Henry Fielding Dickens, sixth son of the novelist, who served as Common Sergeant of the City of London. Bodie Bates, a Black man accused of attempting to attack a 22-year-old white woman in Pittsboro, was lynched by a white mob. The mob overpowered a jail officer, took Bates to a Calhoun County area, and hanged him from a Yalobusha River bridge. his body was found the next day.
Luther M. Milam of Del Rio is named district certify ing officer in the WPA relief setup and will be stationed in Victoria. Milam has served as certifying officer for the Del Rio office since the relief organization began here in November 1932 under County Administrator E. S. Block.
State Senator K. M. Regan told the El Paso Herald-Post in El Paso that he will likely seek re election in 1936 while maintaining his Pecos legal residence and West Texas Senate seat. He denied moving to Houston to take an oil company post and cited leases with a geologist friend on the Gulf Coast as his current interest. Regan said he does not intend to campaign for a year and has no plan to run against Congressman R. E. Thomason.
W C Hodge announces civil service exams for post office clerk and carrier positions. Applications from post offices must reach the New Orleans civil service district manager by August 19 with tests likely in early September. Applicants must be U S citizens aged 18 to 45 unless military service preference applies.
Mrs. R. A. Peters mother of Mrs. T. J. Jarrett remained seriously ill at her Valley Mills home on Monday. A misreport over the weekend claimed Mrs. Ella Jarrett died Friday night. she has been deceased for over a year. Mr. and Mrs. Jarrett traveled to Valley Mills Saturday to join Mrs. Peters.
Partly cloudy conditions persist for Del Rio and nearby areas tonight into Tuesday. Yesterday’s high reached 90 degrees with a low of 74, and current morning readings show a minimum of 74.

Approximately one mile of pipe for the new San Felipe water system had been strung by noon Monday from Moore Park to Garza Street. Edwin Malm, 40, committed suicide near the Comalia crossing south of Del Rio. His body was found Saturday evening by patrolmen. coroner's verdict cites death by own action. He left a San Antonio address on his dog’s collar and was later released by the sheriff after investigation. He previously worked with the Lockwood Bank and owned a collecting agency.
A camp site for the Civilians Conservation Corps near Del Rio will be chosen Tuesday per a wire to the Chamber of Commerce from Captain C. W. Hann. The selection follows a possible park land purchase in Val Verde County funded by $15,000 in bonds for at least 500 acres with a daily water supply requirement of 8 000 gallons. The Del Rio camp is to be established after October 1, the sixth period.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jack Webster 24 sister of Mrs. Thomas M Johnson were held in Dallas after a several weeks illness Mrs Johnson who traveled to be at her sister bed side was joined by Dr Johnson upon the death Mrs Webster survived by husband and three year old son Jack Webster Jr plus a Del Rio sister
The 10 year old son of Mr and Mrs Manuel Valliementes drowned Sunday afternoon at Quemado. He slipped from a concrete wall into four feet of water and was rescued within two minutes but could not be revived.
Hon. John Loomis, American financial adviser to Liberia, will sail Tuesday for the United States. He left Del Rio in 1934 for Monrovia to aid Liberia’s government and helped win U S recognition. He is expected to reach New York in early September via England, as Charles McCaskey arrived Aug 2 to relieve him.
London Law Times urges Great Britain to act as protecting power and close the Suez Canal to Italian warships to avert war with Ethiopia. It notes the canal’s 1888 Nine Power Treaty obligation to keep channels open and accuses Italy of violating four treaties including the 1906 agreement and the Briand Kellogg pact.

In Chicago on August 5 Judge Justin McCarthy issued a warrant for 26 year old Mandeville W. Zenge in the emasculation slaying of Dr. Walter J. Bauer. Assistant State's Attorney Charles D. Dougherty said he would present the case to a grand jury seeking a murder indictment.
Frank Harris Hitchcock, once postmaster general and publisher of the Tucson Daily Citizen, died in Tucson today from pneumonia. He led the Tucson paper and served in a national government post, leaving a notable imprint on Arizona journalism.
